I can't speak for anyone else because my participation here has always been sporadic at best, but it used to bug the hell out of me the way Barcelona fans would just bitch and moan about Valverde endlessly. Now, with the European failures, I can give them some slack there, but he's a pragmatic manager and he was brought in to steady a ship rocked by Neymar's departure and when we were expected to take back the role of being the best team in the league. And all that happened under Valverde in the two full seasons he managed was they won the league, twice, and did so comfortably ahead of us. Also a Copa win and another appearance in the Final. And he was doing this with Barcelona sides that were not at their Pep-era - or even the Lucho treble squad - talent peak.

I refused to think Valverde was the problem. They just needed a scapegoat to complain about why they weren't winning even more trophies per season than they already were.

They won the league the last two seasons, they still have a very realistic chance of winning it this year, and as long as they have Messi, they'll continue to have chances as long as he hasn't begun seriously declining. They're also a lock to reach the knockout stage of the CL each season; whatever happens from there is unpredictable but they'll like their chances against most anyone.

I heartily disagree with any assertions that they've "wasted" anything.

its good it means Arthur wont play the remaining games AND De Jong wont be playing against Villareal and Atletico. They need to lose these 2 games.

They managed to sign a mediocre player without paying the buyout clause, so I’m guessing the Barcelona directors will be having a massive party tonight.

Arthur never seemed that great to me, even during his time in Brazil. Pretty meh to me. But according to the Catalonian press, they were buying the new Xavi. Add that to Thiago (also new Xavi) leaving them some years ago and you get a pretty comical scenario.

I love watching Messi ignoring the assistant coach. He IS a big diva but has been protected by the media (and referees) his entire career. But the guy is human after all and even he can't hide his true self all the time and he does in the most passive, soulless kind of way.

Pjanic is a decent player, in the short term this gets them a player with a bit more creativity than Artur. Artur for all the hype seems like a Brazilian Gago, sideways passes all day. The fees dont make sense at all, Juve and Barca both overpaying by almost double, but we all know there is some creative accounting going on to get around FFP.

Maradona will always be bigger than him in Argentina..
Messi, I feel like he's a great player, but he's very protected. He is protected by the referees, by the media, by the regulation & Messi is limited to dribbling.

Maradona did everything and even had to be careful as all his opponents wanted to break his two legs. The refs didn't give out yellow cards so easily back then either.

Worked out in La Liga . And got close to a CL las season .

Messi salary is high , but at least he has delivered . Not like his salary kept Barca from spending . Coutinho , Dembele , and now Griezmann have done more damage to the club financially .

Flopped in CL. We use to do the same buy big Galacticos and then mix with youngsters before it was too late, 2003-2004 season especially
The Barcelona board have ********ed up anyway by buying players which have not worked out for them and their system of play

You guys, I really HATE to tell you that it looks like we did our part in apparently throwing Valencia into a bit of chaos.

I know this will make us all very very very sad, to see Valencia, a club we together harbor zero ill will toward, in some disarray. We don’t hate Valencia at all. Let’s grieve together.

(Apropos of the conversation on these last pages, hope they don’t get Valverde)

Pjanic is a pretty neat player. I know I really he would've been great here like 8 years ago. His control in tight spaces and mastery of possession is solid, but I'm not sure how Barca would benefit from chipped balls over the top, especially with an aging Suarez.

Arthur isn't that special to be honest but they've made a swap that really doesn't make them noticeably better given their system and Pjanic is 7 years older. This entire saga reeks of poor management and spending that have forced them into a desperate situation where they have to fix their books quickly.

The next few years are going to be disastrous for them if their on field results continue to slip (with Messi's decline) and they start losing revenues from competitions and title wins. Everyone at this club should have seen this coming for years now.

Vidal, Busquets, Rakatic all over 30. De jong is the only one who is decent for the future. Puig from the reserves could be one for developing but knowing them they will end up selling.

Puig might not even pan out. How many players have they actually churned out that are international class since Thiago?

Sergi Roberto is practically Raul Bravo tier. Fati maybe. Most of the hot prospects they had turned out to be Everton or Europa league players.

To be completely honest, I'm not sure Fati is even going to see stellar heights, may have this topsy turpy VJ route since they are both young and talented and thrust into the spotlight like this. Sergi Roberto has been a huge disappointment especially when he was seen as a messiah in defense.

"Summer 2014 was the last time Barca’s first XI was seriously strengthened, with €165 million spent on likes of Suarez, ter Stegen and Rakitic. Since then Barca have spent more than €800 million on new players, without even one of them establishing themselves as a senior team leader."

"Bartomeu (and not Barcelona - there's a key difference) needs to balance the books more urgently than he needs to refresh the midfield. Arthur leaving for €72M to sign a 5 year contract with Juve means Barcelona see €72M this year. The expenditure on Pjanic is €60M, but it's amortized over his 4 year contract (€15M a year). Therefore, for the year ending June 30 (i.e. tomorrow) Bartomeu has helped generate a net profit of +€57M for the year thanks to this deal without losing another body in midfield. You can flip the math for Juve as well, who also need to balance the books, and they see +€47.5M profit for this fiscal year. What happens afterward? Who cares! That's tomorrow's problem, when there will be more money when TV revenue goes up and fans come back into stadiums... right???"

Saw this on reddit, it explains the Pjanic - Arthur swap formula.

" Barcelona are a socio owned club which means all the money the club uses in operations is paid for by common people. To protect their money and interests, there is a rule in the Barcelona charter where a financial year cannot end in a loss otherwise the board will be liable to be sued and potentially cover the deficit with their own money.

This whole deal is a way to do that. It is rumored that Barcelona are in a financial deficit of around 70 million this season. So they plan to sell Arthur for 80 million or so before 30th June and aim to show profits by the end of the financial year. Then on July 1st, they'll promptly go and buy Pjanic for 70 million or so. This is the least of the concerns because this amount gets adjusted into next season's accounts and the board will be out before the season ends anyways as elections are scheduled in May 2021.

Bartomeu and his gang of cronies are just doing this to save their own asses and desperately want to avoid paying losses from their own pocket. They are low on support right now, with even club legends like Xavi and Puyol supporting other candidates in the upcoming elections.

I also suspect this is the real reason why 7 board members resigned/were fired last month. They didn't agree/wanted to distance themselves from it.

This is absolutely gutting to see the board members of such a historically great club act like drug dealers hustling for pocket change.

They pulled this exact same move last year right down to the dates to swap Cillessen with Neto and show marginal profits."

    Follow up on previous post.
