I don't like this. There is just so much speculation. I see posts on reddit saying Katai must be a closeted racist, and he had to have known of his wife's racist thoughts which I don't necessarily agree with.

This just feels harsh on Katai, but I do get it. It makes the club look really bad to have a possible racist with the team, but again, this was his wife and not his own views (presumably).

If Lletget's girlfriend (Becky G) came out and said something controversial, would we cut Lletget? If you are even leaning towards saying no, then why is Katai any different?

I appreciate the nuanced discussion about Katai's situation on these boards.

Galaxy Twitter wants his head on a pike.

**okay, maybe not quite that angry...I've been watching too many Viking shows lately.....

Yeah. And I say this as an African-American. This might feel good in the short-term, but what's the long-term goal here? This will only encourage racists to be more discrete.

Plus -- giving employers more power over your speech is not something I agree with in general. Employers already aggregate an unprecedented amount of private info from the web about potential employees and giving them more power to determine who deserves to earn a wage based on their value judgements is not the path to ending racism I want to go down.

We will probably never know what happened in the meeting. The Galaxy could have very well said that he and his wife needed to attend diversity training and he declined so they showed him the door. Or it could have been a cold, calculated business decision meant to do nothing more than protect the bottom line. Or maybe he asked for it because he knew his wife was going to be a pariah at all Galaxy functions, etc. We really don’t know. It’s just a really sad, depressing situation all around*.

*Of course the Galaxy fan in me is thinking, “he didn’t look good out on the field, maybe there is a silver lining to all this as far as the product on the field goes”.

I don't think that is as funny as you think it is. But that is just me.

That particular meme never is, it’s used almost exclusively to unintentionally visualize strawman arguments. It’s usually naive, "edgy" people who think they’re being provocative, but in truth just illustrating (no pun intended), how surface level their understanding of a topic is.

On the Katai situation, it's difficult to really comment one way or the other because as TH highlighted, the conversation could have gone a multitude of ways. I would like to think that the the decision was Katai's from the perspective that he doesn't harbor rascist and prejudices beliefs, but for the betterment of all involved amd to not be a distraction, it'd be better for him to leave. It could also stem from maybe his wife just couldn't br in LA anymore after making a pariah of herself.

I assume that this also has league approval since Katai's contract was with the league. While this is pure speculation, but based upon the Fire fan's comments, it's possible that Kayak had prior conduct issues and was already on probation.

Nope they just said, "No Mercy!" and he is out just like that. Oh and if he is "cancelled" go luck finding a new team. Hope you have a backup plan for your future.

As an African American myself I second this. Also this is exactly the type of thing that a neo-nazi will point to as a means of recruiting people towards racism. The whole situation is a shame.

To be clear I am not an MLS guy. I do enjoy watching the playoffs, but I don't have an MLS team. I don't have a horse in this race.

I am not sure how long they have been together, but is it really realistic to think he didn't know his wife held these beliefs? Especially as she was so willing to make her feelings public on social media. He's married to a clear racist. He is presumably going to stay married to a clear racist. Why would anyone give him the benefit of the doubt that he himself isn't racist?

Divorce was mentioned in jest earlier in the thread, but honestly if one isn't racist, how do you stay married to someone who is clearly racist? Being racist not being a deal breaker says a lot about a person imo.

This pandemic got me to read Twitter. That place is awful. Some good stuff on there but a lot of it is depressing as hell. Of course a lot of those are troll-bots, but I still felt like I needed shower after reading some of the threads.:eek::eek:

It's a mess on Twitter, but after awhile you can curate a bit and you're missing some of the worst. But then, of course, you've built up a bubble wall and start to talk to everyone you agree with.

On Wednesday we had that earthquake in Searles Valley near Ridgecrest, and I felt a little roll down in South OC. In less than a minute Twitter told me the epicenter and magnitude. Google didn't help. Twitter can be a pretty good news feed.

It was also great for up to date information about covid as long as you were careful about sources. I guess the rules are: Twitter for breaking news, Facebook for awkward family interactions and the LAG forum for intelligent discussions. :)

So his wife makes these comments and he gets dropped from the team? Disgusting comments, BTW, and delivered at the worst of possible times. But, somehow I don't see this happening in any other professional leagues.

Was there something else going on? He must not be a very good player.

Life is never that easy and relationships are complex. My grandfather, in retrospect, would today be called a racist. And he was. But if he had not taken my mother and me in when my dad was in the navy, I don't know how we would have survived. And, yes, I loved him and bawled like a baby at his funeral. If all of your affections have only been centered on pure and good people, you have led a sheltered life or been very lucky indeed.

I haven't, but looked it up. My question was not about Katai - either he supported his wife's statements or not.
It was about YOU advising HIM to divorce his wife. Katai's wife is 5 months pregnant, what would be your next suggestion - abortion perhaps so she won't raise her child a racist?

No one said anything about only having affection for only good people. That's a strawman. Your story doesn't even apply to the context of this conversation. Kids grow up with attachment to awful paternal figures? Yes. It's a tale as old as time. We also have plenty of kids who separate themselves from those people when they are older, for the better.

That is far different from a guy choosing an open racist to be their partner. And I say open racist, because she was willing to speak about it on her social media. So it wasn't a secret in her circle. As far as I am aware he didn't need to marry her to survive. He married a racist because he wanted to spend his life with a racist. Fine, but one does not get to cry foul when that is pointed out.

    Who said anything about abortion?

I advised him to do nothing. My point was simple. If racism was high on his marquee of care, then he couldn't possibly be with someone who obviously racist. It isn't. It says a lot of about him. Namely he is cool enough with racism to be with her.

Also come on. People with children separate every single day. Let's not act like this is something that does not happen.

I’m gonna leave everything because it’s been respectful and I think a good debate on a topic that has no easy answers. But will remind everyone to stay respectful and no personal attacks. That’s for Twitter.
