Canadian Premier Soccer League is looking for a safe place to hold their season this summer. Has made request to #PEI's minister of tourism. 300 players. Would self-quarantine for 14 days. Be great for economy minister says, but health & safety would be foremost.— Kerry Campbell (@kerrywcampbell) May 27, 2020
HFX Wanderers will be opening up their training facility from Monday. Phased approach starting with voluntary, individual or small-group workouts. Looks like Langford, British Columbia are the frontrunners to host all 8 teams for the rest of the season which would start in August. Also, a TV reality documentary following all 8 teams Here’s the kicker: plans to have film crews follow all 8 teams. Reality TV series in the works.🎥 ⚽️— Jordan Cunningham (@yyjordNEWS) May 29, 2020
Looks like Vancouver Island is ahead to host the entire season! Pacific the second team to get back into limited training: #CanPL https://t.co/IUK7Yy4l9v— Oliver Platt (@plattoli) June 1, 2020 If MLS goes on lockout, CPL might be the only soccer league active (D1) in Canada by August
MLS is planning to restart in late June with a tournament in Orlando. https://www.latimes.com/sports/socc...estart-plan-training-begin-tournament-orlando
If the league doesn't lock out the players I think we are now at DEFCON 2, as the @MLSPA issues a plea to fans over the potential @MLS lockout. #MLS #MLSPA https://t.co/yRg2YCXr2N— Miki Turner (@turneresq) June 1, 2020
CanPL restart in danger? The league has informed the players the 25% deferred salaries are now cuts and they want to make an additional 5% cut. The players are reportedly pissed, even more so because the league hasn’t recognized their union yet and the players think it is so they can unilaterally make the pay cuts and force the players to play the mini competiton. The #CanPL spoke to its players today about re-start plans and salary cuts. I’ve had multiple players reach out to provide the core of what was said. Detsils in this thread. Tl;dr—They are pissed and don’t feel heard.— Duane Rollins (@24thminute) June 2, 2020
Since we are in COVID times, ratification of the union has be done in each provinces which could take a while. Until all provinces ratifies the union vote which is said to have been nearly unanimous, the league can do whatever they want. At issue is that the union wants to league to recognize them outright which the league have nothing to gain in doing so. They're buying time by forcing the union to get through the red tape. The league always knew the players would get unionized but didn't think it would happen this fast. As a unionized employee myself, I support the players in this. Until then, the restart isn't threatened... the players have no choice. That's why they're pissed and can't say I blame them
Players have no choice but then that means the players could decide not to play and then CPL ends up being locked out anyway which could still happen
They have no choice if they want to get paid They won't. It's in their interest to see the league succeed. They will get unionized eventually once all the provinces ratifies the union. As for the players, some revenue is better than no revenues. You'd have a point if they were already millionaires but this isn't the case here. 2020 season is happening
That's a pretty dick move and really not a good look for CPL. If they know that the union is going to be recognized anyways, there is no point in them not recognizing the union now and then working with the players to make the restart successful. I'm not sure how labor law in Canada works, but this kind of crap would result in wildcat strikes and a full court blitz in the press. On a related note, Duane Rollins was contacted by the CPL league office and they said what he said that not everything he tweeted in the thread I linked was accurate. Duane did not clarify what the league said wasn't accurate, but he did add that league staff also took a 25% paycut and that the reason not every player was notified about the initial deferment was that the league left the notifying up to the teas and not every team contacted their players in a timely manner. For the sake of fairness, I’m going to give this its own post, separate from the other thread:League officials have contacted me this morning to say that the information I was provided by players last night is not accurate.— Duane Rollins (@24thminute) June 2, 2020 For the sake of clarity, I can confirm that the office staff at #CanPL did also take the 25% pay cut.— Duane Rollins (@24thminute) June 2, 2020
Yeah.. Don't be this guy, Robert. Always support the players' union over the league. Particularly when we are talking about unilateral paycuts, forcing players to endanger their health, and generally sticking it to the players so that the teams can save a few ducats. Yes, it is tough times, but the support of the fans are the best way for the players to stand up to the league. Again, massive dick move from the league. This is a horrible way for the league to start of its relationship with the players' union and is really not something that a fan should be supporting. There is absolutely no harm in the league working with the players to get their support for any paycuts and establishing the rules around the mini competition. This tactic is nothing but a bunch of millionaires and billionaires sticking it to their employees so that they can save money. This is not okay.
The federal government has a covid program that pays 75% of people's wages. The employer is supposed to try to pay the rest if they can. So does this mean the CPL players are receiving only the 75% provided by the government and the teams are paying nothing? And that they want to make that a permanent amount even when the teams start paying again?
From what I understand, now that the CPL has made the 25% paycut permanent, the government will now be paying 75% of the new salary and, yes, the cut is permanent until the players' next contract.
I don't disagree with you and I'm unionized myself and very much so pro-union. I can only shed some opinion on why I think they are acting this way. My guess is that it's not about the league being anti-union like an Amazon or banks, they are buying time. From what was said, the league always knew that the players would be unionized, they were caught off guard on how fast they did it. So buying time means that if you recognize them outright, you have to go through collective bargaining as of Season 2. If you don't, the union has to go through the process from start to finish which means that we might be in Season 3 or 4 before they have to go for bargaining. MLSPA was founded in 2003 I think, my guess is the league had hope to get 4-5 years without a union.
I support the players 100%. I'm unionized myself and I'm just being real. We have a dispute with our employer and choosing to just walk off is something that most employees can't afford to do... same as striking even if it's the best thing to do. Just highlighting the reality of most of the guys, not because I like doing that, but because I know most cannot afford to walk off and the league knows that too Most businesses are dicks in regard to union, CPL isnt different than any other businesses. I too wished they'd just recognize them outright but I'm not surprised either, millionaires and billionaires got rich on the back of employees, that's not changing unfortunately.
Because the players sued MLS in 1996 in an attempt to break up the single entity and it took 6 years for that lawsuit to work its way through the courts. Due to US labor laws, they couldn't sue the league and be unionized as that would have meant the complaint would have had to go through arbitration and via CBA negotiations.
Yep... players are getting 75% of the salary via the government of Canada and the teams aren't paying the remaining 25%. The 25% is gone for the 2020 season only. I'm guessing their rational would be that they aren't getting any ticket revenues.
Its the same here, can't sue and be unionized at the same time...a frustrating rule in my opinion. I didn't know the players tried to unionized as of year 1. Thanks for the info.
