I do wonder if "The green machine" will be more green and less of a machine in the seasons to come and if the league will subsequently become more open. :cautious:

Yes, that's also the reason why her full name is Yuka Nicole Momiki (and she used to have Nicole as her name on her jersey in Beleza).

Welcome back to our thread, @TabascoT, long time no see! :)

So, I'm watching the 1995 Women's World Cup Final, as anyone might do, and although Japan weren't there, there were a few sideline ads for the men's "World Cup Japan 2002" - but also, a few yards away, "World Cup Korea 2002". It's a story I didn't know, which may give lessons for the current bidding race. CUE WIKIPEDIA!

    I like their optimism, tho.

Also, Fifa wanted to hold some games in North Korea, but then they decided to send the teams to Sapporo instead.

What can all of this teach us now? Well:
    1) Japan could've hosted its own full World Cup
    2) Fifa voters love getting co-hosts, even if one of them is Kim Jong-il

I was gonna do a full insider's guide to the Australia-New Zealand WWC bid. But long story short, the document's well presented although NZ was a late addition. NZ would host half the groups, and 29 of the games - my main worry is the potential crowd size here. The men's u20 World Cup crowds here were...okay, tho smaller stadiums. The NZ record for women's soccer is only 7,000 and other women's sports didn't do much better pre-2020, whereas Australia gets some very high attendances.

Japan would totally deserve a WWC; I think Brazil and Colombia could host well too. I'll be thrilled if NZ gets half the WWC, but it would only be awarded on the country's good reputation - NZ Football is sleepwalking into hosting, which isn't a good way to win it.

I'm also unsure how the overseas delegates will react to all the World Cup opening events being centred around Eden Park, one of the 14 tourist attractions of Auckland

Wait, scratch that, the 2008 U17 WWC games in NZ had twice as many fans. (Which the federation chose to forget in favour of a glorious 1-3 defeat)

Does Hannah Stambaugh have dual citizenship?

My brother lives in Australia these many years and his kids are all dual citizens. He affectionately calls them "Half Breeds", which is an extremely derogatory term in English. For you Blisset as I know you are interested in the funny ways of the English language.:)

Brief update of the Spanish league:

Maya Yamamoto leaves Deportivo. She has not yet announced her new team.

According to Maya's twitter, it seems that Hitomi Tomiyama is retiring. Tomo was playing this year in Santa Teresa.

Ayaka Noguchi leaves Español and signs for second division Pozoalbense .

Ayano Dozono leaves Málaga. After a difficult start due to injuries, she had a very good performance before the premature end of the season, so I hope she will find a new team in Spain.

Minori Chiba leaves Córdoba and has an agreement with Eibar. Eibar were promoted to first division along with Santa Teresa.

Basically off-topic, but an Icelandic Women's Football's thread has been recently opened in Women's International and it looks like Tiffany McCarty, a player I guess most of us remember from her seasons at Albirex Niigata Ladies, went playing there. And she scored right away. :)

And yet another European League shuts down for good for season 2019-20: Italian Federal Counsel decided yesterday that Serie A Femminile is not going to resume to play the last 6 games of the season  (Men's League, on the other hand, will resume: are we surprised?).

This means that all the positions were frozen to the status of the latest match-day that was played: Juventus gets the title, Fiorentina joins them in Champions' League and, especially (for us), Orobica and Tavagnacco are relegated in 2nd Division. It's a shame, because Tavagnacco could have had a reasonable shot at reaching third-to-last place and avoid relegation.

Not sure what Shino Kunisawa and Mizuho Kato are going to do, but I doubt they'll remain in Italy to play in Serie B. Unless they're offered another signing by some other Serie A's club, I expect them to get back in Japan to play the next season at home: does anyone has any news about them?

I was combing through the media to look if there was any recent piece of info about Kunisawa and Kato and I happened to find this double-interview from 17th of January of 2020. Of course, it was well before the outbreak, so it says nothing about our Japanese players' current choices, but I thought it could be anyway interesting to post it here. It's in Italian and at the moment I don't have the time to fully translate it: you can try with an automatic translator and, after that, if any of you is curious about specific sections and wants to get a better translation, you can ask to me. :)

I recently read an article (I can't find the link right now) that discussed how lower level leagues have been and were being impacted by the pandemic. One of the things I got from the article was that some low level leagues will be unable to restart after lockdowns end and that cannot even make a go if things opened up for play without spectators. The leagues discussed, which included a couple of women's leagues, were said to be always running from week to week and were pretty much player supported and many have stated that they will not try to open back up when play can resume as it will be like starting from nothing and they just cannot make that work.

I am going to try to help a local adult league get restarted but I doubt I will be enough, they need more help than I and a few others can give.

I believe that all over the world people need to get behind the restarting of local leagues and give what help they can. Without the roots top level soccer becomes a lot more meaningless.

I live in Japan and I would love for it to come here, but I think New Zealand and Australia would probably draw more crowds.

Nadeshiko would have a huge chance of winning the world cup if they held it! Pretty much any Asian team would do well in that tournament. As I have said before the heat and humidity would absolutely destroy the Europeans and the Americans would have to change the way they played if they hoped to succeed.

Today was mild today but the humidity comfort levels were still at "miserable" the worst they can be and we are nowhere near July and August.

If Japan do win the bid then a June tournament - like they did for the men - would be the right decision.

It is, but I worry, because the Nadeshiko games here are rarely sellouts. I just worry that maybe the Japanese public will not get behind the tournament.

But I have thought on it a bit more and the men's league here has a pretty good following and I imagine a lot of those fans would go out and watch some games, but it will depend a lot on ticket prices and how they advertise it here.

Also they would have to choose grounds/areas that have a strong football culture like they did with the Rugby World Cup. Obviously from the quarter finals on, the stadiums will be packed, but some of the group stage matches might have low attendances.

I was here for the 2002 world cup and I was able to get scalped tickets to four matches in the group stages, because not everybody wants to watch Ecuador versus Croatia.

Also if it is held in Australia and New Zealand it should be much easier to get tickets to watch Nadeshiko. I would seriously go to Australia to watch the women's world cup.

There is also the falsely perceived language problem for people traveling to Japan. People think that traveling in Japan is hard because Japanese is a hard language for westerners. That is true but Japan is pretty unique in the Language department. When I was last there, quite a while ago, and it continues to this day according to my granddaughters who are living there, it is hard for English speakers to get much Japanese practice. It is not that the people you run into are not tolerant of people not speaking good Japanese, although there is a little of that, rather it is that a large swath of people in Japan want to practice their English. It has become rare for Japanese people not to be at least bilingual and tri or quad-lingual is not uncommon. They really teach languages in schools.

Even though I lived there for over a year with a family my Japanese did not really get much better. However the Father, Mother and the four girls all improved their English a lot.

I would really like Japan to get the nod but I think my hopes are doomed to be dashed. The attractiveness of the Australia/New Zealand bid looks to be too great to fail unless something unexpected happens.

BTW: For me there would be a greater language problem in Australia or New Zealand because the English they speak is very foreign to my USA ears. It is like England but worse and England and the US are said to be two countries separated by a common language.

But I also have a selfish reason for wanting Japan. My granddaughters live there and there is a better than even chance they will still be there in 2013. They have wanted me to come visit for some time but my health has prevented me traveling much. My health is improving over the last few months and my doctors say that should continue. I would have mostly free lodging as my daughter and granddaughters would be happy to put me up and I still have some favors owed me so transportation around the country (at least between places where the US military has access) would be fairly easy and cheap and I could avoid the worst of the crowds.

I noticed too late to edit the post but clearly, at least to me, I meant 2023 not 2013. Even the Japanese do not have time travel, as far as I know. But who knows for sure? They really are quite clever. ;):D
