Well Frenie is 22 years old and does anyone expect he won't be a starter for the next six years? I don't think Aertssen has played in the MF for Ajax and don't know if he did when he was in the Sparta academy.

I don’t want to find better than Frenkie. We need to find the perfect complement.

  5. Do we realise how many Orange players from the last decade were originally from the Sparta academy?

Three Dutch kids in the UEFA.com's ones to watch in 2020: Stengs, Boadu and Lang.

The first two are for sure. Noa Lang seems like a "lazy" choice by the editor... Lang hasn't really had a ton of games and impressed so far. Maybe the selection was heavily influenced by his hattrick a while ago. Schuurs would have been a better choice IMHO, or Owen Wijndal (I get it, three AZ players in the list would have looked too biased). For an eye-catching choice, might as well go Gravenberch! I think he's the real deal, and 2020 could be his breakout year.

Seven of the players who were with the U-19s at the beginning of the season were promoted to Jong Ajax and did not play in that match. Jong Ajax are over 20 points ahead of Jong AZ and in third place. The other week they defeated Helmond Sport with a line up whose average age was 18 2/3 years of age, youngest starting lineup ever in the Erste Division.

Since we don't have a lot of football on our hands right now you know what would be fun? Making an updated prospect list! Maybe say from 1998 to 2003 players? I know there are a few 2004s that are starting to get attention but that's so young beyond van Axel-Dongen and Aertssen.

I'll throw some lesser knowns into the mix like Kaj de Rooij, Elayis Tavsan, Azor Matusiwa, Micky van de Ven and Jan Paul van Hecke. I'll come up with a full list maybe later this evening but would love to hear input from everyone.

I guess I can start. Here's what I have so far; I've only listed the talents I believe that have potential to make an impact at the NT level at some point, if they continue to progress (some are already there, but listed for the sake of it).

    • 1998: Calvin Stengs, Teun Koopmeiners, Javairo Dilrosun, Rick van Drongelen, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Carel Eiting, Joey Veerman, Deyovaisio Zeefuik, Kaj Sierhuis
    • 1999: Matthijs de Ligt, Donyell Malen, Justin Kluivert, Owen Wijndal, Cody Gakpo, Perr Schuurs, Tyrell Malacia, Noa Lang, Armando Obispo, Godfried Roemeratoe, Bobby Adekanye, Jordan Teze, Che Nunnely
    • 2000: Ludovit Reis, Kik Pierie, Jeremie Frimpong, Juan Familia-Castillo, Mitchel Bakker, Lutsharel Geertruida, Anthony Musaba, Kaj de Rooij, Jan Paul van Hecke
    • 2001: Myron Boadu, Joshua Zirkzee, Daishawn Redan, Sepp van den Berg, Wouter Burger, Micky van de Ven, Kenzo Goudmijn, Crysencio Summerville, Jurrien Timber, Shurandy Sambo, Quinten Timber, Cheick Toure, Xavier Mbuyamba, Elayis Tavsan, Arjen van der Heide, Maxim Gullit, Liam van Gelderen
    • 2002: Mohamed Ihattaren, Ryan Gravenberch, Ki-Jana Hoever, Sontje Hansen, Kenneth Taylor, Mohamed Taabouni, Brian Brobbey, Dirk Proper, Naoufal Bannis, Romano Postema, Jayden Braaf, Alberto Puts, Steven van der Sloot, Anass Salah-Eddine, Melayro Bogarde, Ian Maatsen
    • 2003: Naci Unuvar, Juruël Bernadina, Mexx Meerdink, Myron van Brederode, Noah Ohio, Mohamed Sankoh, Yusuf Barasi, Shilo't Zand, Kian Fitz-Jim, Youri Regeer, Fedde de Jong, Denzel Owusu, Devyne Rensch
    • 2004: Ilyas El Moussaoui, Iggy Houben, Amourricho van Axel-Dongen, Yaël Gil y Muiños, Wouter Goes, Olivier Aertssen, Livano Comenencia, Jayden Candelaria
    • 2005: Jaden Slory, Yoram Boerhout, David Kalokoh, Jevon Simons, Gabriel Misehouy, Antoni Milambo, Rainey Breinburg, Oualid Agougil

So from here we can see that some of our upcoming years are better than others. 2002 in particular not only has two potentially generational players in Ihattaren and Gravenberch but is very deep with potential stars. I'm personally a big, big fan of Hansen and Maatsen but Braaf has been really interesting as well. Veerman is a bit of a late bloomer but has looked phenomenal with Heerenveen and is one that could be a breakout star for the 98 group. I've highlighted the top player, or the one I believe will be the top player, from each year.

Discuss, let me know if others should be included. Talk about your favourites.

Im eagerly waiting for bobby Adekanye to arrive on the NT stage. Has played few games for lazio but has shown immense potential. Plus Inzaghi is using him upfront as a shadow striker in 4-4-2. This will further enable him to play anywhere up front ,where as he is more a winger. My expectation for this guy is to bring backs those overmars and zenden days when they absolutely use to terrorise the flanks. With Immobile and Correa first choice strikers, I just hope Inzaghi will rotate him more in between them.

Maatsen is also an intresting talent but he must be careful he doesnt end with jack of all trade and master of none certificate.

Any body thinks thomas Buitink will make it big?

Here's my rundown of this group... in an order of expected impact to Oranje NT.

Stengs will be a key building block for Oranje. I have no doubt. He is a special talent and very smart. More importantly, he is a "position-less" player - so his versatility is/will be a huge asset. Like Memphis today, or Bergkamp in late 90's.

Koopmeiners will be a solid rotational player. Not as indispensable as Frenkie. But he will be around for a long time, and accumulate plenty of caps. Think of Strootman/Afellay.

Bijlow will have a decent shot for Oranje no.1. There isn't a clear-cut choice of future GK's following Cillessen-Bizot era.

Veerman will be the wildcard for me. All-around midfielder, a workhorse with a touch of creativity. I read somewhere that he is in top 3 in tackles, passes and dribbles for Heerenveen. Talk about involvement! Oranje can always use somebody who doesn't demand the ball, but rather recycle it effectively. See De Roon or Propper.

The rests, I am indifference... not saying they won't succeed, but just not as likely.

TFM, Dilrosun and Eiting are troubled with injuries, seemingly way too often. They lack precious development minutes, and are at risk falling out. Zeefuik is speedy, nothing more. Van Drongelen has an uphill battle against some of the top emerging young Dutch CB's.

Some of my thoughts regarding to this 1999 group.... again, in the order of what I think would be their impact to Oranje NT.

De Ligt: A generational talent. Already established. Future Oranje captain. Will earn 100+ caps when all said and done.

Wijndal: I have not been this excited about a LB prospect since maybe... err, Jetro Willems. I think Owen is a real gem, and will be a long term answer to Oranje LB woe. His build up and overlapping plays are already advanced for his age. Unlike the other so-called "modern" LB's (Willems, Van Aanholt), Wijndal can actually defend with aggression, and his positioning is quite good. Another fine season with AZ, and I reckon he will give Blind a run for his money to start at EC2021.

Malen: He will be in the mix for the Oranje next gen striker. Not a super fast sprinter, but his direct play creates a havoc. And he's deadly given the chance. Comfortable dropping back and drifting to either side - so I think he will be utilized in many ways, and will be asked often to lead Oranje front line. I can't think of a good benchmark for him... maybe Babel in his Ajax days (pre-Liverpool). Or Alexis Sanchez.

Schuurs: Enormous talent who's just scratching the surface. Has a great physical tool (height, sturdy frame) to become a top drawer CB... and wait until he adds more strength and muscle! Composed and good positional awareness even in his young age. Pretty sure he will have a meteoric rise in a couple years... unlikely to the extent of De Ligt's, it will be phenomenal, nonetheless.

Gakpo: My wildcard.... if he stays long enough and develop in Eredivisie, I suppose he can become a nice attacker for a upper-mid European club, and have a solid rotational role for Oranje. Pace (long strides), strength and excellent ball control. Question is if he can become deadly in front of the net. Reminds of young Kanu/Adebayor, or Heung-min Son.

Biggest omission for me is Justin Kluivert. I have never been high on him. To my liking he is too one-dimensional and has a tendency making poor choices. But I get the excitement by others around him (quick rise, footballing blood/heir, etc.)

The rests I haven't seen enough to make good judgment. Maybe they will surprise. Others from the 1999 group who's trying to make some noise at the U21 level... Tahith Chong, Ferdi Kadioglu, Mitchell van Bergen.

Ugh... this is a tough group, and quite underwhelming to me. I don't have necessarily a favorite player here. The first 4-5 names on the list could become a solid player, but could be a bust as well. None of them is an established option at their respective clubs - which could be quite detrimental long term (missing development time).

If I had to pick, I'd probably go with Reis. Somewhat a safe and lazy choice, I know. While he hasn't cracked Barcelona senior team yet, I guess the fact that he's around the best of the bests must give him good learning experience.

I would say that Ajax backup GK Kjell Scherper should probably be included in the watch list... huge (physically), and nice potential.

Ajax did not renew Varella's contract so Scherpen may end up as Ajax #2 next season.

imo both Pierie and Scherpen should have been loaned back by ajax after signing. they missed valuable season and instead of wasting their time in jong ajax , they could have gained more playing in eredivisie this season for Emmen and Heerenveen respectively.

Pierie is not as good as Botman who is returning to Ajax after his loan.

  21. I disagree.
    Pierie is far better.
Look back at the ratings I provided on the Eredivisie players.
When Kik debuted at Heerenveen at just 17 he in that debute year got ratings superior to Botman now at H'veen at 20yo.
It is like Kik lost interest while playing in Young Ajax.
It was a dumb move from him. Instead of playing at a higher level than at H'veen and adding to what he already mastered at H'veen he is now in a situation that is a regression in play quality.
When he moved to Ajax I already posted that to me it was a mistery why Ajax bought so many CD's. Not only Per Schuurs, but also a bunch of Latin Americans.
To me it smelled like preventing the comptition getting quality inforcement. PSV could have used him big time (their CD's now for two seasons suck big time) and overthere Kik would have added to his qualities, while atm he's regressing.
I would have liked him to join Feyenoord at that time, but pictures of him sleeping under an Ajax cover was a no no for many Feyenoord fans.

Hansen isn't leaving Ajax unless it is for a lot more money than mentioned in the article. he's bound to get first team action next season and won't at ManCity.
