An other good analysis from the Rolling Stone. Appropriate as well to start the new thread. Hope you guys still have the capabilities to be outraged.

If you were to write a playbook for how not to prevent a public-health crisis, you would study the work of the Trump administration in the first three months of 2020. The Trump White House, through some combination of ignorance, arrogance, and incompetence, failed to heed the warnings of its own experts.
It failed to listen to the projections of one of its own economic advisers. It failed to take seriously what has become the worst pandemic since the 1918 flu and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.
And when the White House finally awoke to the seriousness of COVID-19, the response it mustered managed to contain all the worst traits of this presidency. Trump and his closest aides have ignored scientists, enlisted family members and TV personalities and corporate profiteers for help, and disregarded every protocol for how to communicate during a pandemic while spewing misinformation and lies.

About empty shelves in stores in quarantine zones - another factor is that restaurants are mostly closed and people are eating food from supermarkets instead. But the food that is grown for restaurants have a totally different distribution chain than food grown for consumers and there is no easy way to switch. So store shelves have no eggs, but eggs meant for Denny's have to be thrown in the garbage. And it's not just a matter of switching because that's not how capitalism works.

That's why you see stores package their own bakery's flour and sugar in plastic bags and stick a price on them. They can get all the institutional flour they desire. They can't get enough of the ones in the nice paper wrapper for all the new people baking bread at home.

Why, exactly, since we had peacefully gone on for some hundred pages on the other one?

Not questioning, just curious: what's the logic behind openining a new thread and doing it just now?

So we can get 20 more people on the first page.

It's an old BS tradition to claim 1st page.

I know some countries are under-reporting their covid-19 cases and some are over-reporting (a few are denying the existence of any case). Iran is among former countries.

According to BBC news, Iranian Parliamentary center of research estimated the real number of cases in Iran to be 600,000 people and 8600 related death. The official number of Iranian health ministry is 76,000 cases and 4777 death.

The truth is coming out little by little. I hope Russia, China and other countries which shamelessly manipulate the numbers to a large scale, come out clean eventually.

Rolling Stone would write that. But it's not wrong. This response will be covered in the high school textbooks, outside of Texas, and the analysis won't be flattering.

That's an interesting aspect to this that highlights something I've tried to explain to various Libertarians over the years...

Speaking as someone who spent 40+ years in business, that way you think capitalism works... yeah, that's not how it works.

It is QUITE possible for capitalism to do all the dumbest things imaginable and create massive inefficiencies and yet be following all the basic rules of 'capitalism'.

It's true to say that, over a period of time, free markets can direct goods and services to where they're needed but it's also possible they'll direct them to who has the money to pay for them instead.

So, even if it does work 'properly', it doesn't mean the outcome is always the best for the society as a whole and, in any event, (as you say), it often doesn't work 'properly'.

Page? I thought it was the post number?

As you can see Blisset, some traditions are better understood than others, particularly among those of us that are old and forget shit :(

At one point(I think) it had something to do with pageloading .If a thread just went on forever,it led to lag when people reloaded.
Now once a thread hits 10000 posts we start a new one.

5.25 M added to the unemployment line. Those are numbers but needless to say, behind that, real people are hurting out there.

The Labor Department announced U.S. weekly jobless claims totaled 5.245 million last week, compared to an estimate of 5.0 million by economists.
More than 20 million Americans have now filed for unemployment in the last month
