Flu vaccines are free, well, it's cheaper for insurance companies to cover the cost of a flu shot than a hospitalization.
Thank you. I had never seen a so young Sean Penn in my life, I wasn't even figuring he could have been. The thing I don't get is why they're sniffing at papers at the end of the clip.
It makes me....sad I guess....that not only do we have a President that would do this, he would do so with overwhelming support of both Republican politicians and republican voters. That a President would even contemplate this would have been unthinkable 5 years ago. It should be unthinkable now. But instead I’m left in a position where I’d be surprised if he didn’t go down this path. Sad. I just don’t understand what has happened sometimes
You'd think more of them would hand out birth control pills for free since the cost of pills is pennies to what a kid costs from 0-26

France and UK have been posting Italy-level numbers themselves (Belgium is worse). Very little about them, too. I think the answer is as simple as when Italy and then Spain were hit, the U.S. didn't have many cases, so they got attention. Now for the U.S. media everything is about what is happening here.
Elderly poor POCs are likelier to have pre-existing conditions and are less likely to get top-quality medical treatment. So yeah, I figure their death rates will about double that of a white person of the same age who has comfortable means.
I should clarify. Yes, poor POCs are likely to have pre-existing conditions that increase their mortality. But I suspect that the kind of elderly POC that reaches 70 is likely to be healthier and avoid those pre-existing conditions. So I would expect a poor and a rich 70-year old to have the same mortality rate once exposed to the disease. Maybe I am wrong.
Most likely yes. The ease of access to medical care for white people and the known bias against how medical professional perceive pain / symptoms from POC deeply impacts the care they receive
On the subject of my avatar, it is worth noting that Sean Penn's charity (CORE, which was originally focused on Haitian earthquake relief) has stepped up and set up drive through COVID 19 testing sites in Los Angeles. You might even argue that Spicoli has done more to fight this virus than POTUS has. https://newslagoon.com/sean-penn-wants-to-save-lives-with-free-trials-of-coronavirus/14996/ it’s just a beloved character from an early 1980s high school/teen coming of age movie called Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The character, played by Sean Penn, is a truant pothead surfer dude with no interest in his future. Most of his scenes are battling with his World History professor Mr. Hand. The characters name is Jeff Spicoli. Watching this movie you might be surprised to know that Sean Penn goes on to be the serious actor he goes on to be. If you can find the film I think it’s worth the 90 minutes. EDIT -sorry should have known this was answered before I even woke up.
Yeah - it turns out that, aside from Russia election meddling, there may be some additional downsides to having a president who trusts the word of foreign dictators over his own intelligence agencies and experts. I've said this many times, but it remains remarkable to me that Republican elites and donors have decided to actively push for five more years of this. As much as they love the tax cuts, the judges, the deregulation - are they really worth rolling the dice over and over again with their children's and grandchildren's futures?
I've been suspecting that this other shoe might drop at some point: Exclusive: State Department cables warned of safety issues at Wuhan lab studying bat coronaviruses https://t.co/kgwc21YwBP— Josh Rogin (@joshrogin) April 14, 2020 While the idea that the virus was a deliberately created or released bioweapon was always kooky, the possibility of a research laboratory accident releasing the virus is much more plausible. Those types of concerns aren't confined to China, either - see the controversy surrounding Fouchier and Kawaoka's bird flu research, for example. And if you want to feel really unsettled about the future, consider this: anything that a lab can unleash by accident, another lab could unleash on purpose.
The key word is elite. If you are truly among the elite, your kids and grandkids futures are assured anyway.
Ding ding. This is what I was saying several pages ago. It's the most logical explanation for Chinas behavior, among other factors, such as why so of the early infections even visited the Wuhan market.
Belgium has the highest level of urbanization in Europe. 98% of Belgians are counted as "urban population". Basically the whole northern half of the country is very densely populated, the southern half not so much. That could be one reason. Also they have a Dutch speaking Flamish population and a French speaking Wallons population that apparently are at odds with each other politically more often than not. That's probably a gross oversimplification of the issue, I'm by no means an expert on the matter, but some articles I have read made it seem that Belgian politics is generally a mess because of it. Don't know how much a botched/delayed political response is a factor here but it could be another reason for the bad numbers.
At first blush, it sounds kooky to me but House orders Pentagon to say if it weaponized ticks and released them
