Most of the ownership groups are very wealthy. I suspect they can weather this even if it is uncomfortable.

A question I have is: What happens to player salaries? Are they guaranteed and get paid anyway or do they get laid off or what?

This seems hugely premature by at least 3 months.

Not sure we could wait 3 months but yeah, we could at least ride it out through April before making this call.

DC United is furloughing a handful of staff.

They also let people know that some of the coaching staff, including Olsen and Loudon's coach, and executives are deferring their salaries and they are donating about $50k of cash and food to a local non-profit...

I could see them cancelling the season in its traditional form, but not calling off play completely. Even if it takes until the fall, I expect them to put on some type of circus-like mini-season, maybe even jointly with LMX.

That'd be no more sports in the traditional format. MLB and others are looking at creative approaches that might pass muster.

Hearing that MLS's concern might be over the Canadian teams and their ability to go back and forth over the border during this time.

This could just be speeding something up that was inevitable. As the home viewing experience has been improving and, in many ways, is superior to the in-stadium experience, there has been speculation that sports will move to a more sound stage environment and either have crowd noise added to the production, or a "filmed in front of a live studio audience" type situation.

Right, there's a difference between "sports are back" in our traditional sense of what that means and "sports are back behind closed doors all in the same metro area" or something.

Bundesliga is talking about starting again in May so MLS cancelling the whole thing definitely feels premature.

So what happens with players if MLS cancels this season entirely? Will players go out on loans to other leagues that will reopen to stay active or will they remain here?

I first saw the interview on tv. I thought it was a joke because it sounded like Mortal Kombat. Apparently he was serious.

First thought: I just saw Andrew Wiebe's tweet about his personal experience with Covid-19, and I saw Shawn Francis's tweet the other day. I can only imagine what the impact on decision making at MLS is if a sizable portion of the league staff (in NYC) has personal experience with the disease.

Second thought: Sporting Kansas City - Your 2020 Supporter Shield Winners #PaintTheWall!!!!!!

The last CBA and the next agreed upon, but unratified CBA do not contain force majeur clauses, so guaranteed salaries would have to be paid in full.

“Most” = not all. That why I said “a few”.

Some owners have a majority of “wealth” tied up in multiple sports properties. Which do they cut loose first?

    Thx,

    Jay!
