started this thread & hopefully we could keep it going for years to come(instead of switching to a new one after every year)

it's revenge time! next Wednesday against Sweden. Looks like coach MVT is keeping the roster very similar to the one that beat England at Wembley last November. I would of liked to see HOF's Tabea Wassmuth on it though, she was burning up the Bundesliga from winger position -Cristiano style- until an injury put her out of action for about 4-5 games late fall(though she's back now). Surprise that Sandra Starke isn't on the list(as she actually started vs England in place of the then hurt, Svenya Huth) And missing sadly is Sarah Dabritz, out with an ACL till? Here's the Algarve Cup roster

Kristin Demann , Vanessa Fischer, Maximiliane Rall, Carolin Simon, Sandra Starke and Tabea Waßmuth are standby players.
We have still one Bundesliga matchday before the Algarve Cup to play which means changes in the roster due to injuries are not unlikely.

MVT will have to let go of 3 players from her chosen 26 as I believe the Algarve Cup got a limit of 23 per team roster(or maybe that's been changed to 26?)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------btw; re visiting the successful lineup vs England
England vs. Germany - 9 November 2019 - Women Soccerway

it's obvious that it's going to be Huth in place of Starke, but who's going to replace Dabritz? Gor the feeling MVT going to go with her fav, the 18 year old Oberdorf(even though she's an CB st Essen) & then go with Gwinn instead of Hendrich(which in my book would be a mistake, but as mentioned MVT got her faves)

I could only find the regulations from last year where only 23 players were allowed but according to Wiki Belgium has also nominated 26 players. Other teams have 22,23 or 24 players. I guess MVT will use all field players in this tournament and at least two goalkeepers.

MVT said that she wants to play against Norway with 11 new players. This is based on an agreement with the Bundesliga clubs before the Algarve Cup.

At the La Manga tournament the German U19 has won their first match against France 2:1. Goals by Sonja Merazguia (Hoffenheim) and Sophie Weidauer (Potsdam).

Great win for Germany against Norway 4-0 while using their B squad. They’ll play in the finals. Still waiting for a relay on YouTube as well as their 1-0 revenge victory vs Sweden

The finals of the Algarve Cup had to be cancelled after Italy was ordered back early due to Covid-19. Coach MVT used 11 new starters in each of the teo games played
here was 'A' squad vs Sweden
Germany vs. Sweden - 4 March 2020 - Women Soccerway
    the 'B' squad vs Norway
Germany vs. Norway - 7 March 2020 - Women Soccerway

obviously the Swedish game was more tight/difficult,, than Norway match was more free flowing. Germany controlled the first 75 min., but finally the Swedes were able to launch several attacks in the dying minutes. It was whole sale domination vs Norway, and the more shocking, is by a squad who might been played he first time ever together. I thought Dallmann, Elsig & Schuller looked particularly good in it, and really should be starters for the A squad.

With these two victories Germany firmly stays at #2 in FIFA world rankings, bu still have to prove themselves if they can win an major summer tourney again(that's still a ways away(Euro 2021). They could challange the #1 US to a couple of friendlies, but to win, I do think MVT needs to stop playeing favorites; the youngsters she picks for the A squad; Oberdorf, Gwinn & Buhl, didn't look that good. As well as disappointing once again was Marozsan, who as usual, looked a step to slow.. So will she combined my faves form the B team(the ones I mentioned) with the A squad & beat the US? Well depends, while both in both games, Germany showed signs of being a quick, counter attacking team, it still wanted to play form the back, which obvious means so to be a more plotting, ball control style, which can make it very accessible to the usual strong/high press that the US specializes in
Based on seeing the 2 Algarve Cup games, this would of been my starting lineup

    ........................................Benkarth
    Hendrich.............Doursoon..........Elsig...........Kleineheme

    Dallmann..........Leopolz...........Magull.............Buhl

    .......................Huth............Schuller

Popp would be better suited agiasnt weaker teams, MVT faves Heggering, Oberdorf & Gwinn did not look good defensively vs Sweden/ or jusr saying vs the US you would want your quickest/most physical/most athletic players in there. One possible notable player that's missing is Tabea Wassmuth, the Hoffenheim winger, who could just be the fastest of them all!

it's like there's two Maroszan's out there; one that plays for Lyon with stats like 10 goals/8 assists thus far in league season from her CAM spot....then there's the Marozsan that hasn't scored a goal in 2 & half years for the German NT even though she's the main, free kicker & PK taker. Could also add that's even vs 3rd tier Eastern Euro squads & tiny countries like the 50K, Faroe Islands. Dunno her assist record, but the German's tend to play inter-changeable positions style(where defenders become attackers). Germany's scored 38 goals in their last 7 games with just about eveybody else scoring(including CB's & FB's)

more controversial is not including Alexandra Popp. As the usual central striker on the NT, she's got an dangerous header game & a wicked outside shot, but she's not an natural fwd(she plays outside mid for Wolfsburg). She's great vs opponents that bunker, but along with Maro, a tad to slow on counters.

and then coach MVT definitely smitten with the 17 year old, Lena Oberdorf. Using her as an attacking CB, she’s started now nearly every game. That would defiantly be red flag vs the US. So yeah, I would envision a faster, more counter attacking/ more sound defensive lineup with my choices

Marozsan played in none of Germany`s games against the Faroe Islands.
She also has only shot three penalties:
She scored in 2017 against Russia and Slovenia and missed in 2018 against Slovenia. The last penalties for Germany were shot by Popp and Däbritz.

It's frankly embarrassing. Usually, you can talk about 1 crucial mistake after a game, but there were 3 mistakes by the referee in this one. Awful

FIFA's youtube channel today posted the 2105 WC semi final between Germany vs USA. Some might say Germany was a bit unlucky not to score with the 1st PK given, but I do believe the US played the overall better game. The german's were even hampered more that they came off an bruising, physical quarter final vs France that was finally decided by PK shootout. As well that a few like Marozsan & Laudehr were nursing injuries to go along with top players like Kessler & Alushi had to retire earlier that year. Overall, this should of been the championship game though as the US/Japan final proved to so one sided

It is embarrassing that the USA in 2105 still needs the help of the referees.
Next Monday FIFA will show the 2003 final against Sweden which won the vote against the semifinal against USA by 51% to 49%. I guess the US fans are responsible for this outcome.

Yeah, the Alex Morgan foul shouldn’t of been given an PK since contact on her was originally started a couple of feet outside the penalty area. All I can think is maybe the ref thought of ‘continues’ play only calling it an foul when Alex finally went down(if only VAR was available though the call would of NOT be PK)
Well I do remember is the French fans whined & screamed about the ref’s calling the game against them when they lost the quarters to Germany. Guess you win some, loose some

Do you really want to compare the referee mistakes from the USA game with this correct penalty against France?

I think the French needed a scapegoat to explain why the better team lost. So either the referee or Thiney was responsible.

I watched the first half of the Germany/USA semis. Despite the 0-0 scoreline, can't express enough the dominance of the US with so many close calls where as Germany got a few, harmless long shots in. Around the 34-37th minute mark, eveything but the kitchen sink was thrown at the German goal, who's only saviour is the goalkeeping of Angerer. Instead of diving for low balls she makes some incredible saves with her her left foot, as well as veering the ball out of harms way. She also an excellent distributer of the ball ala Manuel Neuer, with her accurate, long throws, the US couldn't set up their vaunted, high press. But otherwise, the Germans barely made headway upfield, thanks mainly to Sasic's ineptness & slow pace. Even though lil Leo might of been the hero of the French game, here she couldn't handle the fast advances of Rapinoe or Morgan. One play, Megan steals the ball from lil Leo so grabs her shirt as she runs by her. Gets an yellow, but if that happened late in the game it could of been an red. Then a few minutes later Americans were complaining about a handball in the penalty box. What I saw the ball hit below Leupolz shoulder sleeve, but above the elbow, so don't think it should of been called an PK, but you never really know.......

will comeback with the 2nd half thoughts

2nd half; after another US corner kick/close call(thanks in part to Neid’s insistence in defending CK’s with an zone instead of 1v1 marking),Germany finally takes over the field for the next 20 minutes resulting with Popp finally getting into the penalty box. Now this is the thing; the BBC commentator calls first an corner kick(as Hope Solo touched the ball last), then after the PK call is given, the commentator argues that it was either an “soft foul” or even an “dive”(this coming from the supposedly neutral English commentator). My opinion; Popp dived, but only to get an extended leg for the final shot which still was a PK since Ertz put her hand on Popp’s shoulder. But in no way would of this be an red card(as a shoulder tap would of not pulled down Popp who had so much momentum going forward).
Five minutes later Morgan gets the PK. Alex tries to sandwich into Krahn & Bartuziak, but the initial contact came a few inches outside the penalty box. So if only VAR was around, I do believe the PK wouldn’t of been given, but Krahn did turn her body on Morgan instead of going for the ball, thus an dangerously close free kick should of been given. This call was the only that the ref made an mistake on(considering how close it was to the PB line, it was an honest)
The main blame need to be put on Neid. Why did she choose Sasic to take the PK when Mittag would of been the more of an accurate shot taker? & why did she keep her in the game when it was obvious Sasic was looking horrible as central striker she fumbled every ball she got without even taking a shot in 90 minutes. In the meantime, Bremer & Dabritz(hero’s of the previous year u20 WC champs) were on the bench & never got to play. As well, same to be said of Krahn, who looked completely outclassed as a CB(though sadly the only other CB’s available were Henning & Babette Schlecht).

final analysis; it really wasn’t going to be Germany’s year. They didn’t have the fire power upfront(only 1 goal in their last 3 games), being unfamiliar with playing on Astro turf & hostile crowd hurt them as well. But the biggest killer were the premature retiring’s of Kessler, Alushi, Kulig & could even put Gafrekers into the mix as she still at 35 was the Bundesliga’s 2nd leading scorer during that season.
Neid would finally be on top again when she won the Olympics the following year. But thats another story. Will report back when I find an replay of the gold medal game.....

The first reaction of the commentator is: We are looking for a penalty here!
I agree that Popp losing her balance has to do with Popp trying to shoot despite the foul of Ertz but that doesn`t change anything.

    Read Law 12.
Denying a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity
Where a player commits an offence against an opponent within their own penalty area which denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offender is cautioned if the offence was an attempt to play the ball; in all other circumstances (e.g. holding, pulling, pushing, no possibility to play the ball etc.) the offending player must be sent off

    The following must be considered:
distance between the offence and the goal
    general direction of the play
likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball
    location and numbers of defenders

    Sasic penalties for Germany:
    2012
    Japan goal

    2013
    USA goal
    Japan goal
    Russia goal
    Slovenia goal

    2014
    Iceland goal

    2015
    Brazil goal
    Sweden goal
    France goal
    USA missed

    Mittag
2005 Italy saved (Mittag scored the rebound)

You think Neid should have replaced a player who had scored 9 from 9 (including 2 penalty goals at the WWC plus a penalty in the PSO against France) by a player who has never scored a penalty for Germany.

I've posted on an US threat asking for an opinion on the fouls, unfortunately only got one reply, this was it:(my questions in light letters, responds in dark letters)

anyways, Sasic retired shortly after the WC, read that it might of been all the blame she got for missing the penalty
