I've told you guys how I got frostbite in my first two toes on my right foot at this game, haven't I?
All time against Kansas City we are 13-9-13 (W-D-L). RSL has 48 goals to KC's 45. We have never beat them in the playoffs or the open cup, which stings. 7/16/05: L 2-3 8/13/05: L 2-4 5/20/06: W 2-1 9/30/06: D 3-3 7/14/07: L 0-1 8/29/07: W 3-1 6/7/08: D 0-0 6/28/08: L 0-1 5/16/09: L 0-2 8/29/09: W 1-0 5/29/10: W 4-1 8/7/10: D 1-1 8/3/11: L 0-2 9/17/11: W 1-0 4/14/12: L 0-1 7/20/13: L 1-2 *12/7/13: D 1-1 (L on PKs)* 4/5/14: D 0-0 4/11/15 D 0-0 6/21/15: W 2-1 7/24/15: W 2-1 +8/12/15: L 1-3+ 4/2/16: W 2-1 5/21/16: W 3-1 10/16/16: D 0-0 4/29/17: L 0-3 7/22/17: D 1-1 10/22/17: W 2-1 +6/6/18: L 0-2+ 7/4/18: W 4-2 9/30/18: D 1-1 *11/4/18: D 1-1* *11/11/18: L 4-2* 6/29/19: W 2-0 8/10/19: W 2-1 *MLS Playoffs +USOC
The game that really stings is that July 2013 game at home, when we almost held out for a tie despite being down a man but stoppage time kept going and going and going, and they scored the winner in the 97th minute. That was the difference in hosting MLS Cup or playing it in Kansas City.
I'm grateful for the trip to KC to eat at Oklahoma Joe's in the gas station. But everything else sucked.
The referee for the game was Matthew Forrester. I wonder what RSL did to piss him off enough that he "forgot" to keep track of the stoppage time.
One thing we tend to overlook is that in minute 3, Chris Wingert made a very dirty hit that should have been red but was only yellow (he was tossed for a second yellow in like the 65th). Playing short 87+ minutes instead of 25+ minutes was well deserved but didn't happen.
It wasn't minute 3, it was all of 5 seconds into the game: if we're gonna talk "should have been ejected's and KC then we gotta bring up how Collin, the guy who scored the winning PK, should have been sent off in the second half of MLS Cup.
I don't think of myself as one who typically can't let go of things, especially sports things that are relatively unimportant, but the 2013 final still stings and it might forever.
I would like to think that all soccer referees are fair arbiters of the game, but the 2013 final makes me wonder if they really are.
Wasn’t that his first year officiating MLS? If it’s the game I’m thinking about... we were probably the two best teams in the league at the time, both teams had “bite” in their style of play, it was one of the marquee MLS fans that season...and PRO assigned their newest official. He was terrible and, to me, the game was basically unwatchable. I might be confusing this game with another home match against KC though.
I dunno. All I remember was that there was supposed to be 4 minutes of stoppage time, but he allowed play to go on and on and on until KC scored the winning goal. One of the commentators on the MLS propaganda website even mentioned how 4 minutes became 7 minutes. This can happen in rugby, but not in soccer unless there is lots and lots of extra-curricular activity and there wasn't really any of that in this game, just KC trying to get the winning goal and RSL bunkering. A really good example of either referee incompetence or the referee throwing the game for the other team. It seems like PRO has done this a number of times between RSL and KC. I guess since RSL and KC aren't the MLS marquee markets, they feel that they can get away with that since PRO would never allow one of the MLS marquee games to be refereed so badly.
Here's one I am fond of: 3-1 win at SKC in May 2016. This was a game where @Lizzie Bee and @jessyca hosted a watch party on an evening when I was passing through SLC, and I got to join the group and meet many BigSoccer friends.
This seems to be the best thread for my request. In a different site someone started a thread “If you could retroactively VAR *ONE* play in history what would it be and why? Just one play.” I want the play in our MLS Cup where Collin should have been red carded. Can someone here post a short vid of that play for me?
Who y’all got? I loved seeing Lenhart and Collin on the first team. Andrew Wiebe Alright, who did I miss on the All-Loathed @MLS XI? Love them when they're yours, and hate them if they're not. Fishy never got stomped on hard enough to make him cut out the crap apparently, not even when Ricardo Clark went postal on him.
