Agree with Zaq on the blues, it’s a southern Black American folk music form and I’ve played plenty of it. But for listening yep the more creative compositions are my preference. Love that Gilmore track.
Syko, I’m old. I was at Woodstock Saturday and Sunday weekend off from my summer job in college. Santana and Joplin killed it. I fell deeply in love with Grace Slick. Alvin Lee tore it up on Sunday.

 

like all artistic expression, it's either original or derivative. probably the Lascaux cave paintings were derivative, but it's soooo hard to tell after17K years.

when i was in college, a guy i knew in HS brought over about a dozen blues albums ( the flat black round things you play w a record player ), including 5 issues of The Real Folk Blues ( Muddy(2), Sonny Boy, Wolf, and John Lee Hooker). later, i got into Albert King, Freddie King, Little Walter, Buddy Guy and a bunch of the early artists, including Robt Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson, etc. when the blues explosion occurred with more and more British rockers (Clapton, Beck, Page) playing covers, i got interested in the white Americans, Butterfield, Bloomfield, John Hammond Jr. and later, Vaughn and others.

i learned how to play the blues harp and jammed on occasion with bands that played in clubs in the Belmont Shore area of Long Beach. i was a little better than OK at the harmonica, and the bands were house bands who were pretty easy to suck up to.

before my wife and i moved from our condo to a house, and we downsized, i had about 2400 LPs and half as many CD, with some overlap. i also was a jazz buff and focused mostly on the BlueNote post-bop groups, Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and so forth.

i have very, very eclectic tastes in most things, so i like almost all kinds of music, even some bordering on gangsta rap crap. exceptions are when a bluegrass group plays the 5th song in a set because it's a reprise of some other song they played before*, and polkas.

so, while i agree in principle with what you said, Zaq, it comes down to personal preferences and those are founded on experience. i would hazard a guess that i've been to considerably more live music productions between 1967 and 1974 than you have, and it should not escape notice that i may be more "experienced" than you, by some measure.

It almost was Classic Floyd. Gilmour wanted to try to get it into Animals - I think maybe they would have changed the name to Animals...... But it was probably just a bit too upbeat for that Dark Masterpiece.......

You do realize that Roberto Baggio played the final with a painkilling drug to allow movement after a double morning massage /heat treatment on his pulled hamstring. AND that because of this (Signori) possibly the best natural finisher in the wiorld at that time (serie A) top goalscorer two years in a row did not play because Saachi figure dhe needed a more defensive forward to compensate for Baggio basically being a passenger when they didn't have the ball.

If Brazil had played Italy in the semi-final when Italy peaked then Brazil wouldn't have been in the final. I think you are viewing it through the memory of maybe being young supporting them..... which is fine ....

Anyway, I wasn't saying my opinion on it is right. Just that it was something (purest blues) I leapfrogged over to get to what I as a slightly mad teenager found to be the more interesting stuff. The real blues that I like is the slightly distanced stuff like Led Zep's "Since I've Been Lvin' You" and "Tea For One"
provided here free of charge ....


However, of the names you mention above, I do actively listen to Freddie King. Fvcking Brilliant was Freddie.....

Problem is there's only so much time in a life and I love A LOT of musice so there'lll never be time now to rectify my earlier omissions. Just as I also no longer keep up with newer music. Cept for a bit of new stuff here and there by artists high on my likes list.

Aqualung (obviously) and Heavy horses are my favourite Tull albums though.....
Yeah - I like Nobody's Fault But Mine, a lot - but I like about 50 or 60 songs by Led Zeppelin a lot .....
another of those musical moments I was yammering on about above is by Led Zep in Tangerine ... Jimmy page plays that little sol at 1.40 then it peaks 23 seconds later and goes to the 12 sting (I think) for that outro quick chord run ... Man-oh-Man Ijust love that ..... pure genius ....

Wow! I’m impressed. A kiwi buddy of mine, super musician took off with his guitar and tape recorder to wander Europe and America and by accident found himself at Woodstock.
I still have “Pearl” among my old vinyl. Oh no, my daughter stole it.

Black American folk was the forerunner of the Liverpool sound. Huddie Leadbetter old Leadbelly style. That started the Skiffle music with Lonnie Donnigan . That’s when I got my first guitar and Learnt Rock Island Line.
I’m still shitty at it.

 

The only Beethoven I had was his Pastoral. Nice when I just wanted to read.
I did get into Wagner for a while after a season of The Ring. I had my VW Van with a couple of sets of 100w speakers and a graphic equalizer. Big stuff back then. I’d drive into the parking building at work cranked up with “Ride of the Valkyries.”

The first part is true, I was 9 when it happened live. I've watched the highlights hundreds of times and I guess you could make an argument that Brazil & Italy were pretty even. I was definitely not "supporting them" though, I was very upset that they got past Netherlands with that insane free kick. My father had bronchitis (the reason he didn't attend said match) and he was yelling (or trying to) at the TV when Netherlands came back from 2-0 down because he thought Brazil was the only team that could take care of Germany eventually. Little did we know that Bulgaria (!!) would handle them just fine in the end.

I didn't know about Baggio and the painkillers. Interesting.

As to Baggio - I very much doubt that he would have mis-hit a penalty if his leg was normal. I saw him take a lot of penalties, and that's the only time he ever did that. Have a look at his leg in the highlights. It was bandaged and had some kid of heat release pack attached. Any other game and he wouldn't even have been in consideration to play, but a World Cup Final breaks most rules.
I think Sacchi made a mistake in selecting him. Prob should have just kept him on the bench and started Signori with either Massaro or an extra advanced midfielder. Still, hindsight is everything.

Let's take it in a different direction - how about a piece of classical music that you find extremely annoying.
I'll go with this cr@p, that everyone graduating in teh United States is forced to listen to:
Elgar - Pomp & Circumstance ... It's alright - quite likeable, actually - a little Mozarty - until it gets to the refrain which always makes me frown (and that's at best)
I also don't believe in Lands of Hope and Glory - all lands are the same and become what the people make of them.....

 

Although I can appreciate the musical genius that is JS Bach, I can't listen to musical exercises for more than 3 minutes and 17 seconds without thinking "Dude, write a tune."

 

Chopin. The piano master. Don’t recall disliking anything of his I’ve heard.

 

That refrain done right raises hairs on my arms. It was pushed for a while to replace that god awful god save the Queen.
Which is as bad as that bawdy London pub song about a whore and changed the words to a Scott Keys poem and called an anthem.

I missed ‘by that much’, many years ago a ticket to the last night of the Proms. I’ll regret that for a long time.
