You’re right. Athletes at the Division I level don’t care about winning games. Not a factor whatsoever in the experience.

How has nobody called out the obvious here in comparing Holy Cross to U Penn and saying she had a better conference record though, when Holy Cross and the Patriot league are God awful at soccer. Of their 11 teams, only one had ten wins this year, you had one team barely crack the top 100 in RPI that was Navy at 91, the average RPI for the league was well above 200, in-fact every team but navy and Army (168) was above 200 RPI, patriot has zero strong teams. USF on the other hand, in the American Athletic Conference, you have 3 teams that were top 25 this year, 4 teams under 100 RPI, one team that made the sweet 16. Patriot league is like playing JV compared to USF and your complimenting her for doing well in Patriot league one out of her four years employed there? Bravo, well done on one season a game above .500. Even though she got smashed in some non-conference games, what 3-0 to D-2 transitioning to D-1 Cal Baptist, and 4-0 the next game. Lol, she's heading to the Ivy League now, where 5 out o the 8 teams there are top 75 in the country. I'll be impressed and take my hat off, and eat socks if she can sustain the success there the previous coach had by year three, once the old coaches teaching methods are forgotten and her own recruits come in, as many first year coaches are successful with change, then by year two acquire the Sophomore slump phase where no new tricks to motivate complacent team.

Side note to earlier comment a page or so back said its so easy winning at UCLA or USC/Stanford, everyone wants to play there. Thats a bit of a silly comment seeing that its a tremendously break neck difficult conference to win in if you're a fake, you'll get exposed fast. Similar to WCC's hire at Pacific University where they did similar female hire when tons of experienced coaches applied, and she had no proven wins or success over good RPI teams, no seasons in the top 200 in RPI, yet had one season around .500, so was given big job when overall record at Delaware State was atrocious. How did that work out for her? 4 years later and fired. This situation though at UPENN, its a great history, already successful program, pressures on to not lose the momentum that it already has and stay competitive. I'm not rooting for her failure, just saying in sitting back and watching the hires the past decade, that hiring proven winners, coaches that have a pattern for success go's over much better than chance, than gender hires, than nepotism or hiring a mutual friend. Choose the coaches that have a good resume. I'm sorry to point out the obvious, 17-35 or whatever her record is not a proven winner. Now's her chance to get tested, see if she rises up. Or un-employed in 4-5 years.

I stopped reading at USF in the American Athletic Conference. They are not. Wrong USF. I compared the Holy Cross coach to past HC coaches. I compared the USF coach to past and present USF coaches. HC was more successful than nearly all of her peers. USF was the worst in that schools history. What you chose to copy from me was a correction of a previous posters statement.

Literally read what I wrote. I didn’t say it wasn’t a factor, I said it wasn’t the ONLY factor. I simply said it’s unfair to say Penn doesn’t care about their “program in general” because of this hire. Clearly they had an agenda to hire a female and clearly they didn’t get their first pick or it wouldn’t have been open this long. I’m just saying, having filled positions, there’s a lot more to a fit than wins and losses. Not saying that’s the way it should be or shouldn’t be, it’s just reality. It happens all the time at all levels of sport.

By the way it's not sexist to call out this poor UPenn hire, a bad hire is a bad hire. I called out the Kentucky extension earlier for a male coach (along with the male Cornell coach, Colgate, UNLV, and LSU). Should have put Oklahoma in that category too. Mark Carr was 25-60-12 overall at San Francisco (USF means San Francisco, not South Florida from the AAC in this context). He went 6-23-8 in the WCC. Won just 26% of his games there, so just about the same as Brown at Holy Cross. And he was a calamity at the youth National Team level. Yet gets a Power 5 gig. Bad hire by Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione and SWA Lindy Roberts-Ivy, they saw Youth National Team and got excited by the title with no further look. Oklahoma didn't post his 25-60-12 record on their hire release when mentioning Carr's USF experience. Just like Penn didn't list the Holy Cross 17-37-14 record on Brown's hire release.

    Agree.

Did Footyballs see NVD's UofP conference records? She had only 1 winning conf season in 2018.
    2019 - 2 conf wins and 5 losses.
2016 - 2 conf wins and 2015 - 1 conf win. These are not very good conference stats.

This is where RPI is flawed as it favors a small conf like the Ivy League that plays at least 3-4 games less than other teams.

I recall a discussion about the shortened Ivy League schedules. They only play about 15-16 games total. That is an average 3-4 less games then most other teams.

It is like having 3-4 byes a season as compared to most other teams/conference; a built in advantage.
Less games, less travel interfering with school work/tests, less likelihood of injury and less negative pull if they do not have 3-4 other games and do not have those potential draws or losses vs the records of those other opponents and those opponents.

Also in 2018 a Pat League team took the P5 SEC champs (who my recollection beat 3 or 4 top 15 teams) to PK's in the only 0-0 game in 2018 NCAA's.

Just showing that teams have good seasons and off ones. Rebuilds happen every year.

Yale, Penn and Cornell all have new head coaches. Will be curious to see the transitions.

It is true that the Ivy league plays less games but it has nothing to do with it being a "small" conference. Ivies also start the season later than most schools do. That's a big reason less games are played. It is true, though, that athletics are relegated to academics. That's a good thing, IMHO.

That is not what the poster said. I believe their point was there are more factors than winning/losing. Their post just brought forward the fact that there are always many factors in these types of decisions. They are 100% correct. You knocked down an argument they did not make.

Good players go to many schools for other reasons than winning. Some want to play in the ACC for example and so go to lower tiered schools in that conference rather than a higher tier mid-major to "win."

If you are saying that a coach should be primarily judged on their record then I generally agree. Coaches at the highest levels are evaluated on their record. In sports the winners are celebrated. Wins and losses matter.

However, in the entirety of D1 athletics I'd bet most athletic directors aren't focused on the wins/losses of their women's soccer team, despite how much we care about the sport.

UAPB posted on their athletics page that Erik Solberg is the new coach, but deleted it soon afterwards. Not sure what this means, but players have yet to be officially informed.

If that is true, candidate pool was very poor. He should have stayed where he is and wait for a better low-mid level D1 opportunity. 1 season at NW OK State with 1 7-101 record...i guess from a UAPB perspective...big WIN!

At some point, someone reported that Dixie State and St. Peter's were open Steve Golas and Melissa Sherwood still are listed as head coaches on their website roster pages, but they are not in their Staff Directories which rather list only assistant coaches. I assume this means those positions also are open. So, it would be:

    Dixie State
    Holy Cross
    Marist
    South Carolina State
    St. Peter's

With all the disturbance with the old corona going on I’m going to guess a lot of coaches on the hot seat will get a temporary pass this year and we will see less dismissals.

as for the Penn job they couldn’t pry the Montana or Idaho coaches away from their current positions so had to settle for third best. Looking forward to seeing if South Carolina state gets Dorrance.

PB hired Erik, that's confirmed. NWOSU is a tough place to win, Alva Oklahoma, but he had more wins then Holy Cross last year right? lol. :) He improved the record, but reason he got hired was from previous success at the East Texas Baptist job, leading them to playoffs and record wins, its the same recruiting area in east Texas, he has ties and networking there. A good move for him as was wanting to get into the D-1 level and that was his best shot.

Add Alcorn State to the list, they chose not to renew contract of coach after 3 years bottom 3 in the conference. They should do better than that in SWAC with a full funded program. Previous coach couldn't retain more than 15 on his roster for a season, so played games with 9 and 10 players each year almost as his internationals he recruited and offered full rides to often were non-qualifiers that hadn't taken proper classes or tests, so ineligible. Gotta recruit the right ones.

Dixie is going D-1 this summer, curious does anyone know why the head coach bailed? That is three coaches in three seasons now that left, same as Pine Bluff, will have 4th coach in 4 years. Might want to try hiring someone who likes that area and wants to stay a while. St George is gorgeous, just a little small and quirky people. But not bad.

Interesting to see my name pop up on a soccer page, but, thanks for the mention!

just for clarity for your conversation.....

D1 record at JU: 31-41-10 1 A-Sun Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance (4 seasons)

D3 record at CU: 58-27-8 3 OAC Titles, 2 NCAA 2nd round appearance and 1 NCAA Final Four (4 seasons)

NAIA record at Union & GGC: 35-25-3. 1 MSC title and 2 NAIA National Tournament appearances (3 seasons)

    > Definitely more successful at Cap than JU but had more resources and ability to recruit. Can call it rebuilt as it was my most successful run in coaching, only left to return home to GA for family or success would certainly have continued, great place for D3 success if you work hard!

Hired at Cincinnati as Asst Coach then promoted to Associate HC, but record was all Michelle Salmons as HC. No HC record there.

Assistant at UPENN under Darren Ambrose (now at Vandy), and the PENN job is a step up from Holy Cross and the Ivy League is very good... PENN well respected!

Thanks for interjecting an old coach into the fray, nice trip down memory lane!

Coach! Awesome to hear from someone who's 'come out' on the forum. Thanks for chiming in. I could ask you a ton of questions going back to Cinn and Salmon but I'll just ask for clarification of your post if you do come back to read this:

What did you mean by "resources and ability to recruit" comparing JU to Capital. I assume you mean 'relative to the competition' or maybe support from Athletics relative to other sports or your conference? I would also ask if you would argue for new or younger coaches that D1 is not the 'promised land' that many think it is?

Also wondering what your handle was before you revealed your name ;)

IMHO here are the top hires so far in this past coaching hires cycle.

Iowa State. Probably was the best they could have done with getting Matt Fannon. COY in the MAC for 3 years in a row. Yes, inherited good recruits while he was there. And Iowa St has to make massive steps in the Big 12 to compete. But on paper this is a very good hire for the Cyclones. 41-18-7 overall and 26-6-1 in the MAC, no doubt a proven winner. Excellent hire for AD Jamie Pollard and admin Calli Sanders.

St. Mary’s. It can debated on whether Romagnolo should have done more at Notre Dame. She could have done more at what I think should be one of the top-5 programs nationally on a consistent basis. But overall this is a good hire by AD Mike Matoso. TR brings in a 51-21-13 experience from Notre Dame including an ACC regular season title plus good head coaching experience from Dartmouth as well that showed strong growth. Did well as an assistant at Stanford and San Diego and good playing experience from Washington and in WUSA. Don’t really understand why she left Notre Dame in 2018 after four years to spend time with her family, and now wants to be a head coach again. But probably was the best St. Mary’s could have done so good hire for them.

Temple. Nick Bochette won a regular season and postseason America East title in his three years as head coach at Albany. So-so first year as a head coach, and then went 23-13-5, including 11-3-2 in the America East with an NCAA Tournament appearance. As an associate head also was there for NCAA Tournament appearances in 2015 and 2016. The move is a bit puzzling as it seems lateral to go from a mid-major that typically does well to a program that may have some struggles to compete in the AAC against USF, UCF, and Memphis. But kudos to AD Patrick Kraft, SWA Jessica Reo, and sports admin Larry Dougherty on making a strong hire.

On a follow up note, Albany did well to bring in Leigh Howard as a replacement for Bochette. Probably lacked support at Marist yet was a COY there in her first season. Good 12-6-2 record in the MAAC in her two years there. Smart hire for AD Mark Benson and admin Cara White.

Anyone else have impressions on good hires this cycle? We give a lot of criticism to admins that make dumb hires (there's been quite a few the past few months), nice to give recognition to admins that actually do get it right.
