A year after the match, Wambach and other members visited the affected area, including my native prefecture, and encouraged the locals. That evinced their class and the moral quality of women soccer overall.

 

Well there was no mention, that I heard, on the US broadcast today of the happenings years ago. It seemed like for most it never happened.

The US women's lawsuit and the coronavirus pandemic crisis was what dominated all the soccer and non soccer news respectively and I guess I understand.

I wish there had been more but there is just too much of import to remember what happened nine years ago.

This match should not have been played before fans and, since they were stupid in that, I really can not expect expect the powers that be to show either intelligence or compassion.

The best recipe to win a tournament or a title is to build up from the back to the front. Sure, I'm sure that people, including myself, will always moan if Japan has a hard time scoring goals. However, the bigger cause for concern now is the severe lack of solidity with back 4 and goalkeeper. And without that, no one can expect the midfield nor the attack to do their bit with confidence. Unless our issues at the back get sorted out, I would not hold high hopes for the Olympics (if they are to be held, that is).

If you asked me which one I would prefer between an Atletico Madrid-type of defence-first approach and a (pre-Mourinho) Tottenham Hotspur-type of attack-first mindset, I would definitely favor the former as a key to win matches and perhaps titles.

 

You are, of course, correct. However I question the approach that the current coach has attempted in trying to produce a good defense. As good a player as she is the attempt of trying Endo at the back was quite stupid and actually a double failure. It failed to strengthen the defense, in fact it weakened it, and it weakened the attack by taking one of the best attacking players out of the attack.

Decisions like that make me doubt the ability of the coach and without good coaching Japan will never regain their place on the world of soccer that they had before. To succeed a soccer team needs both an attack and a defense and this coach seems, at this time, to be unable to produce either.

Of course with everything getting canceled there will be plenty of practice time to rebuild all parts of Japan's game. It just remains to be seen if they take advantage of this opportunity.

 

But where are the defenders? I had my hopes up for Miyabi Moriya back in 2016, but with her injuries, she kind of disappeared. She was praised by Takakura back then. Maybe she also doesn't want to play that high a level and is satisfied with what she does in Kobe. Who else? I would assume Takakura pulled in the best she could find, no?

 

I have questioned some of Takakura's choices at the back for a while, but I believe the players she has chosen are good players. She tends to choose players from the same teams (Beleza, Urawa, INAC). However, last year Albrecs, Jef and Iga all performed very well defensively with low goals against, yet players from those teams are seldom considered. Weaker teams that perform well defensively are put under a lot more pressure, because they do not have the ball as much, so surely their defenders must be doing something right?

But I suspect she wants technically proficient players who can play out from the back like Guardiola wants at Manchester City. The only problem with that is that even these technical players seem to make mistakes. I think it being early in the season also exacerbated the technical problems.

My main problem was that she only took two genuine full-backs (Shimizu, Miyagawa) to this competition. One of them got injured (Shimizu), so she does not start Miyagawa in the next game. So all I can deduce from that is she was just trying people out in different positions. But then why not play Naomoto or Matsubara in central midfield? Sometimes it is a bit perplexing.

I thought Miyake played quite well at left back.

Endo was tried at full-back because at the Olympics the number of players available to use are fewer than the world cup, so Takakura wants players to be versatile and be able to play in more than one position. Endo at full-back was an experiment that did not work. I can see the logic, but I think she rates Endo too highly.

 

OK, so I make some FB members of those teams.
Ueno from Jef (now Urawa), Kitagawa and Kojima from Albi, Hatanaka from Iga.
From the other teams, of course Moriya, Seike, Kitamura, Ishida, Okukawa and ManYa or so on.

 

Just want to point out that experience is overrated.

Not just full-backs. I believe some of the centre-backs should be getting a chance. I like Ueno and Kitajima. I also liked Ushijima for INAC, but she got injured last year and I did not see her play late in last season.

As a Nojima fan I can tell you that Ishida is a defensive liablilty. Going forward she is actually very good, but defensively...she does some interesting things. I prefer our left back Risako Ohga, but she is probably not fast enough. She has a good football brain. I would like to see her play at centre-back more for Nojima. Maybe it will happen this year now that Kunitake has left for Sendai. I did not want her to leave.

 

Friendly vs. New Zealand (11th April) has been cancelled.

 

Naoko Wada has already scored a goal and given two assists playing for Manly United FC in two matches. She is playing as a central midfielder and is doing a very good job, albeit in a much easier league.

She is playing in a position I hoped Yoko would play in Spain. Basically Naoko passes the ball into space for her faster team mates to run onto. It is working pretty well with Manly winning both games.

I just find it funny that she was a left back for most of her time at Nojima, but once she moved to Manly they obviously realised she had a bit too much skill for a left back in that particular league.

I will be curious to see how she goes once all the players in the Aussie W-League return.

 

I really hope that Tashima didn't actually contracted the virus... and if he did, that the infection spread by him will stay minimal. He was lobbying for Japan's bid for WWC 2023 during SheBelieves in US and I would presume that after watching JPN - ESP on the stadium he also had some contact with the Nadeshiko team.
