    Starting XI's for both teams:

This is the match celebrating Dunn's 100th cap (earned in the Mexico game) probably because its nearest her hometown in New York.

Changes from last game: looks like Sonnett for O'Hara, Mewis for Horan, Williams for Heath, and Rapinoe for Press.

Just made it to my low budget hotel here in Besançon .... Internet is terrible.
Hoping to catch a little bit if the stream holds out.

Can’t believe Press is on the bench ?!?!

But Vlatko knows what he’s doing.

So Dunn and Ertz are even on caps? I did not know that. In the last WWC they were, at least for me, the best defender and the best overall player and they are even on caps with a LOT of their carers still ahead of them and room still to get better. The rest of the world should be very very afraid.

No, Dunn is slightly ahead by 2. She got hers in the Mexico game in Olympic qualifying. Ertz got hers this last game. They were one game apart in getting their first caps (same camp). Ertz got hers first in the first game of 2013 against Scotland (same game where Press got her first cap and Press is now ahead of both by over 30 caps). Dunn got her first cap in the next game also against Scotland (same game where Wambach got her 200th cap).

Notably, they are both 27 years old, which is widely recognized as in the middle of the "prime" years for many soccer players.

Even with the tiny disparity in caps, actually two is not much of a disparity is it, what I said still stands. "The rest of the world should be very very afraid."

The quality of play so far in this match is at least three or four levels above what we saw in the earlier match of Japan vs England. There is little, so far, to choose between the two but the US is playing more in their attacking third than Spain is.

How did that not go in?

US with the better of the chances, but still has the feeling that this game could go either way.

I do not understand why the second and third keepers are not getting more time in these friendlies. They really need game experience against quality teams so, should something happen to #1, they will be as ready as possible.

Rapinoe's very first completed pass of the game comes in the 23rd minute.

So far Williams has been our best attacking player, and probably Ertz the most consistently dominant on the pitch.

The intensity of this match is like a World Cup finale. I'm loving Spain.

The team is usually sharper on corners and free kicks than what we've seen in this first half.

I "think" we are intentionally setting up in this first half to work on playing without the ball. We are working on holding shape against a possession team. We are not intentionally giving away possession but we are also, at this time, are not really directly attacking like we are able to.

The commentators need to realize that "almost" is meaningless in soccer. It only counts if the shot is on goal or the pass is completed. Most everything else is worthless.

I think there have been at least two free kicks between 35 and 45 yards from goal and the kick has gone backwards. That is a good way to assure that nothing will happen from the kick. Using negative space is good but that means playing negative to go quickly forward. Passing backwards and keeping the ball in the back is just a good way to let the other team get well organized. It is generally bad soccer.

HT 0-0. Chances both ways, so not one of those boring 0-0 affairs but a fun one. The US is choosing when to press, which I think is a difference of playing against a possession team versus a team we can dominate or that plays more direct. Just a different game plan.

Some shaky moments in defense though, which is starting to become a pattern.

Watching Spain possess the ball is never "worthless." Beautiful soccer. They mostly bossed that first half, though the U.S. was threatening on a couple of counters, as we know it can be. Lavelle should have been carded--she had three fouls (two of them bad in the same sequence) in about a 5-minute stretch. We'll see if Spain can maintain that level in the 2nd half.

I don't think the U.S. is "working" on holding shape--but it is getting a lot of practice at it because of Spain's possession skills.

My first two changes .... Lloyd off for IDC who, Rapinoe off for Press. Lloyd has screwed up two good chances so far. Failed to control a chest trap when she was unmarked. Hit a shot on the cross from Rapinoe and it bounced twice before it got to the goalie. Im sorry but at this level, that is unacceptable.
I was afraid of this game after I saw Spain out play Japan badly with long stretches of possession leading to goals. We're playing most over the top on a counterattack. Its time to move this team forward coach. In some ways I hope we dont win as people will forget that we were outplayed by a short passing team
