When Albert Pujols was still playing in St Louis, the Cardinal fans called him "God."

Wow, never knew that. Can you imagine what the outcry would be if Carli Lloyd announced to the world that she should be called Queen or "Lloyd the Great"? Or if Alex Morgan called herself "Alex the Great"?

Well, I don't think Pujols asked for the nickname, anymore than King James. But still...

It's the fans that create the nicknames. And the USWNT has The Great Horan and I know at least @jackdoggy calls Morgan Alex the Great.

I hear its a concept by which we measure our pain?

Then again, a dyslexic artist I know says the entire purpose of art is to explore the existence of Dog.

Clapton isn't great. He is to blues what Kenny G is to jazz

I dunno about that-- Buddy Guy, Derek Trucks, Albert Collins, Muddy Waters all went out of their way to fall by Clapton shows. Never heard of anybody that counts even a little sitting in on a Kenny G show... Davern, Marsalis, Sanborn, Getz?

I still think he's the blues version of Elvis singing Hound Dog.

Sanborn could sit in with KG for sure. One's cut from smooth jazz and the other is cut from... even smoother jazz.

"Could" is not the same as "would." S'why, exactly why, I mentioned him.

Sanborn SHOULD sit in with KG. They are cut from the same cloth, no mater what Sanborn thinks. I found a Grover tune I could respect a few weeks ago, and it made me very happy. because I grew up thinking he wasted his talent. I haven't really found that w/Sanborn.

How do you know for sure? It wouldn't be a stretch to believe that fans of US soccer might also be Republicans that support Trump since I guess US Soccer can be looked at as being incredibly nationalist and patriotic for some people. However, that does conflict with this idea that some older generation conservatives that are xenophobic have of soccer being a "foreigners sport" and very socialist as it relies heavily on the entire team working together equally as one unit to score a goal as opposed to some individual sports star that can be the difference maker in something like football, baseball or basketball.

You have many that don't like Megan Rapinoe because of her politics, her colorful hair which apparently triggers conservatives, her being an outspoken lesbian, and what many conservatives would proudly call "social justice warrior" a term that is now considered something negative.

I have no idea who these people are, if they are US men's nat'l team fans that want to act like trolls and put down the women, if they really are conservatives that hate the bad "SJWs of the USWNT", them hating the idea of any kind of arrogance in females(meaning they prefer their female athletes to be polite, dainty and "ABC Disney Afterschool Special role models" because they think that's how women should be behave or rather how femininity works whereas it's totally appropriate for men to be rowdy, unhinged, and "boys will be boys" because that's how men are supposed to act according to these conservatives or whoever these people are that troll the women's soccer forums during the Women's World Cup.

I witness blatant sexism and misogyny on other social media platforms when discussing the USWNT such as Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

This forum is actually relatively tame compared to those other sites so my guess is maybe the average joe trolls don't know this forum exists. Let's be thankful for that, even if we do get a few in here that like to bash the players for their success and their "wokeness".

I praise every kind soul in here that does everything possible to try and dismantle all the sexist remarks and tries their best to promote women's soccer as empowering and a fascinating niche of the mostly male-dominated soccer universe. Perhaps there will be a time when women's soccer is just as popular as men's soccer. Time will tell, due to politic climate, cultural shifts, and generational shifts.

Excellent statement, McSkillz. All of it, not just the part I've quoted here.

As a man who's on this message board and more active on a WNBA board, it's profoundly bizarre and ironic that a good number of men who are passionate fans of one or more women's sports nevertheless express their sexism, misogyny, and homophobia in forums on women's sports.

You owe me a nickel. I loathe Trump and thought Pinoe's celebrations vs. Thailand were pathetic. And, Pinoe is probably my favorite WNT player ever - because of her play. But, that display was pathetic.

Here's the 1992 Dream Team vs. Angola. Fine me anything remotely resembling the WNT's behavior vs. Thailand.

And, Kobe is describe in this thread as "arrogant as ********", to defend the WNT's behavior. Here's the night Kobe scored 81 points. Judge for yourself:

Ohhhh, but male player have nicknames! So, that justifies the WNT's behavior.

You can say the same about the USWNT. Title IX gave the U.S. a huuuuge leg up in Women's soccer. I remember talking with a German exchange student around the time Germany won the WC in Carson (which I went to, btw - Heja Sverige). I asked her if she was a fan of the German women's team. She turned up her nose. "Females don't play football in Germany." Why? "It's a man's sport."

How many teams in WC19 had players who play/played on U.S. college teams?

U.S. women's soccer has had an enormous built in structural advantage over the rest of the world. To say otherwise would be delusional. Might as well deny anthropogenic climate change.

This is changing fast now. Stablished professional teams in South American and Europe are investing and opening woman's team. So the built-in structural advantage is changing to Europe and, to a less extent, to South America. This is, for me, a fascinating story of women's game. Can the College model still prevail against the professional club model? The men's game suggests the professional Club model is better, but maybe the NCAA game is challenging enough to maintain the USWNT at the top of the game.

Up 55 points and they not only keep scoring, but taking full length passes, no look passes, flashy shots, etc.

And there's a clear shot of Barkley popping an Angolan with an elbow immediately after scoring, which I sure didn't see happening to anyone on Thailand.

But of course in pro basketball they don't celebrate every score, mostly only game winners. Soccer is different, a different tradition.

And its a tradition set by men, when they were the only ones playing

What does this even mean in the context of being asholes to lesser teams?
