As many things in the VSA it's not about justice, but about making money with jails. The same with health care. I already mentioned Casper van Eijck, the world leading authority on pancreas cancer at my alma mater the Erasmus University (and Feyenoord's team med!). He has a promising way to fight this one of the deadliest cancers with mutated viruses. He's keen on setting up a production lab at the university to prevent the cure if successful to become a pharmaceutical product that will be extremely expensive for patients. He said it would be unbearable/unforgivable to have a cure that saves lifes, but would be too expensive for most patients to buy. Just wonder if an American oncologist would be in his position with possibly being on the brink to finally have a cure for this disease. What would he do? Think of patients capability to pay for it/patients wallets or his own one?

A close friend of mine hit hard times just when his prostrate cancer hit. With no insurance he went to an experimental study at UW. Must be about 10 years ago now. He’s been cleared for over half that time and is doing well with his own business. his trouble now is he’s a Brainwashed Trumpite and we can’t talk politics.
While that may be true, politicians don't want to say such things aloud. No one wants to let Grandma or Grandpa die, particularly if it is by government edict.
He does have a point, lots of money is spend on end of life care. But saying it out-loud is unpopular and even if you put in some good regulation, it will be attacked by the AARP and other organization as Democrats are going to kill your grandparents. It is definitely needed.
Well, to be fair, people think it's government intrusion is you RECOMMEND them to get an annual check up, let alone start to get those routine camera up the ass inspections when you start to get old, but half the reason that our later in life health care is so expensive is because Americans avoid preventative care like the plague, until bad shit isn't discovered until Stage 4 and post-treatment survival starts to be measured in months, not years. The other half is that people are only coming around to the knowledge that caring for a disabled / sick / aging relative is a staggering financial cost to the caregiver, as well as a massive health cost to them as well. They ignore their own care for the care of the relative, again, leading to higher down the road costs & early mortality, with the ill relative going into LTC. Couple all that with social isolation of aging groups being as toxic as smoking and you get what you get
It's a crap ton easier to schedule stuff if you work a cushy office gig and have generous time off. Not so much when your schedule changes constantly in say retail.
Or pretty much any service job where you have little to no PTO and have to be at work 7-4 / 8-5, you have near zero time to do anything legal or service related yourself. Worse if you can't get FTE hours and have to work 2 PT jobs to get 45-50 hours to survive
