Does David Ochoa take over the mantle from Nick Rimando? He was awesome for Monarchs - won a championship and while young has some great experience there and for the U20s. Here's an interview we did with him this week https://chasingacup.com/david-ochoa-on-underdog-sp/ Here's some more about his play: https://chasingacup.com/david-ochoa/
According to Ochoa and also what I've read online from RSL there is no commitment to anyone at this point.
If the three are roughly equal going into the season, then absolutely, start Ochoa. If he's clearly behind someone, then I hope they start. But I would hope his arc of getting better over the season sees him there at some point regardless of who is there in game one. An academy GK - Jeffery Dewsnup - is one of the two US U17 keepers in a UEFA tournament, which surprised me. I didn't know we were so stacked in the net.
If Ochoa helped them win a championship and is called up to not play it doesn't really make sense to me. Why not just keep him with the Monarchs gaining experience and game time? I wonder if Dewsnup will be Monarch's starting keeper and they'll continue the process they did with Ochoa.
I say let MacMath start as goalkeeper. If he flounders or doesn't live up to his potential, go with Ochoa. Play Ochoa during the Open Cup and any "five away games in 10 days" span.
How I would approach it: Start McMath to start the season and see how the team performs. If, after 10 games (as I expect) we are an absolute dumpster fire, then PLEASE put the kid in to get minutes. Though, getting shot at more than DJ Countess did in year 1 might not be the best thing
