MLS clubs turned down invitations for players to participate without telling the players (at least in some cases).
That would be quite disappointing if it turns out to be true, if they don’t let the boys go at least tell them
I know redbulls did not tell Kenan Hot if he wasn't released or not. They also called up Dantouma Toure so Hot just may have been snubbed for the roster.

So is the standard practice that if a club declines a release, it then informs the player that it did so and (perhaps) explains why? Does U.S. Soccer also reach out to the player? Do the clubs and/or U.S. Soccer typically request discretion in such cases?
It's not standard practice; however, it's a courtesy to be expected from the club nonetheless. US Soccer should never reach out to the player directly without the club authorizing it [unwritten rule]; there are some exceptions to this: player is unattached, player is older (or close to 18 years of age), player is in a foreign league and US Soccer needs point of contact, etc.

The only MLS academy field player that is truly a lock to make a full strength team is Antonio Leone...who is only here because we're trying to retain his loyalty after he was just in a Mexico camp. This was a camp to expand the pool not bring the best players together.
The call-up of California-born Eric Ayala looks to be a complete flyer; he's played just 79 minutes in 5 appearances for Tijuana U15s. I'm guessing he's a #8.
Slonina is the only one. Yapi, Leone, Booth, Dewsnup, Toure, and Valdez are all locks to get pro contracts at some point before they turn 18. Toure and Valdez are both questionable of if they get pro contract offers before the u17 world cup rolls around but they will get a pro offer before they turn 18. Rotundo getting an offer somewhere is dependent on him bulking up.
Perhaps a throwback to the days when Thomas Rongen would call up all manner of totally random Liga MX-based players to the U20s. What are Julio Cesar Castillo, Roberto Romero, and Cristian Flores up to these days, anyway?

The exceptions notwithstanding, this seems logical enough, though I wonder whether you'd mind clarifying whether you mean that you personally would expect this or that you know from experience/conversation with relevant parties that this is in fact a common courtesy. In a social media age in particular, I find it rather surprising that we don't know far more about callup refusals than we seem to via statements from players or their family/friends/agents/whatever. (Understanding that there are reasons why this might be a touchy issue, I might like for people to know I was called up to a YNT camp, even if I couldn't go.) The majority most likely did. The guys who did get released from MLS academies are either brand new call ups (most of them), guys who were called up super early and now getting another shot (Toure and Booth), keepers (Slonina and Dewsnup) or guys who are red flag dual nats (Leone). Every other MLS academy player who is a lock for this age group is at GA Cup (read snub list from earlier).
The big things to hope for from this group is Darren Yapi to claim the 9 and an elite RB and LB to emerge because I’m not sold on anyone. Nati Clarke can cover as a left back but I’d much rather have him as the 5.

We have to get some of these players out of the team. Players such as Tanton, Yohannes, Valdez, even Slonina have become retreads that have gotten their chance, and haven't shown well enough. Booth and Alvarez don't belong either, IMO, although they are newer names to this group. Good to get some newer players in there. I think Dewsnup, Williams, Morales, Jones are all good enough to have earned a chance to stake their claim for this team. I know nothing about Batiste, Henry, Wiley, Ayala, Auvray, so if these games are streamed, l'll be interesting to see how they play.
I would say that Slonina has done well when he's been in a ynt shirt. At the 2003's Nike Friendlies I thought he did really well in goal.
I thought he’s struggled some for this age group in international tournaments. I agree that he wasn’t bad at the Nike Friendlies. I don’t think he’s a bad prospect, but I’m not sure he’s earned the reputation that he has. As I see it, he’s clearly behind Dewsnup and Brady (his club teammate), and then he’s somewhere in the mix after that. It’s a good age group at the position, so likely being third best isn’t bad, but third best is third best. I don’t see why he’s here and his better club teammate isn’t. I think the early pro contract has distorted how he’s viewed. Also, I don’t think Chicago gave him that contract because they thought he was anywhere near pro ready. I think he got it because he was about to leave for Europe, if he didn’t get it. I don’t have exact confirmation that he gave them a pro-contract or he’ll leave for Europe ultimatum, but I do know that he had interest in Europe and I was told at the time that it was very likely that he’d be leaving Chicago to sign in Europe.
Whoever is coaching youth keepers in Chicago is phenomenal. One can argue about a particular keeper, but they all are complete, technically solid players.
I'm pretty sure Rapids U17 GK Isaac Nehme is a late addition to the US U17 roster. He's been with the US U15s in the past. I'm not yet sure if they're carrying all three of him, Dewsnup, Slonina or if one of the latter two couldn't make it.
