It's somehow reassuring that this time around Nadeshiko Japan don't need to qualify. :p Missing Rio 2016 was a big disappointment. :(

Now, I can follow the qualifier from an armchair with popcorn at hand and just enjoy the games, with no worries at all  (even by a Japan's point of view, there's no particular opponent that I would fear to meet at Olympics: on the contrary, by definition the teams that won't manage to qualify didn't have to be as strong as one could have supposed to begin with :coffee:).

New FIFA calendar forced different format to this qualification.
Group A is to play in S. Korea while group B in China.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the two-leg crossover play-offs - to be played on a home and away basis - with the Group A winners facing the Group B runners-up and vice versa.
Matches will be played on February 3-9, 2020 with the play-offs scheduled for March 6 and 11.

Play-off match between Australia and North Korea ....in Pyongyang :cautious:
(although N. Korea often is using China as host country for their matches)

2020 Olympic qualifiers are happening this week. As posted elsewhere, North Korea have withdrawn, apparently for political reasons.

@soccernutter, would we be able to get these top 5 active threads moved over to 'Women's Olympics' plz? :)

From the general thread, some sad news:

A bit reminiscent of when the Women's World Cup 2003 moved to the U.S. due to the Sars outbreak.
(Australia had had the 2nd-place bid for that tournament, a few years before it became an AFC member.)

Let's hope this virus won't cause more suffering in China. It's a terrible thing to happen during New Year too.

With the Chinese team in quarantine until the 5th of Feb while they have a game on the 3rd, does it mean they will forfeit that game?

China should still advance to the home & away series in March. I don't see Taipei or Thailand upsetting them. Of course, if they're still under quarantine, then things change.

Schedule has changed Australia v China now 12.02 instead of 03.02. Outside of FIFA dates. Wonder if the clubs will pull their players out of that one.

“FFA very much appreciates the collaborative approach displayed by everyone to re-schedule the Olympic Qualification tournament.

“I’d like to thank the CFA for their understanding and cooperation, despite the difficult situation their team and staff have found themselves in since arriving in Brisbane.

“FIFA, AFC and the clubs have also been extremely flexible and supportive of the changes to the match schedule."

    China 6 - 1 Thailand

It's hard to image today that 2 years ago Thailand was inch close from throwing Australia out of AFC final. Looks like Chaba Kaew rode their glory days a bit too long...or perhaps generational change and transition simply isn't going smooth. Plenty new faces on the pitch today though, which bode well for the Thai WoSo future.

China's looking well in midfield and in the final third but their defense looks shaky. Li Mengwen - quarantined in China is imo bigger miss for Steel Roses than Wang Shuang's.

This Thailand super fan should get some major props here. After the game the team came over to thank him:

It's a little easier to believe when you consider that 2018 just kinda sucked in general for Australia, as they dropped points to Thailand, Chile, Portugal (twice!), and South Korea. So I was never very sold on Thailand to begin with...

I think our group has had a curse put on it. First it got moved twice because of corona virus, then China ended up in quarantine delaying the schedule, and now Sydney cops a years worth of rain in two days. At least the rain put some of the still burning fires out.

    Group B results

    Chinese Taipei 0 China 5
    Thailand 0 Australia 6

    Table

    1 Australia 6 points + 13
    2 China 6 points + 10
    3 Chinese Taipei 0 point - 11
    4 Thailand 0 point - 12

Australia and China through, ranking to be decided on the 13th in Sydney. Group winner gets Vietnam, runner-up gets the Korea Republic. Big incentive to win the group for sure.

Australia has looked like the better team and should win on Thursday. I'd expect Australia vs. Vietnam & China vs. South Korea for the playoffs.

Pity tonight's game is missing some key players, making it a very tough one for China to win...

Last game of round 3, later than planned, in western Sydney - it'll be live online:

    Australia v China (Kickoff: 08:30 GMT / 19:30 AET)

    * (Australian coverage is on the ABC site and Foxtel TV)

Australia gets a relatively lucky draw to top the group on goal difference. For the two spots we now have

    Vietnam V Australia
    South Korea v China

Full time Australia 1 China 1 (Van Egmond 90+3' Tang 86')
China were top of the table for 7 minutes, they just needed to hold on to an extra one.

Australia v Vietnam, South Korea v China for the two Olympic spots.

China got robed by refs...and their own inabilty to finish. Wang Shanshan scored in first half but AR made big error showing imaginary offside. Superb game upfront was played by goalscorer Tang Jiali who had both opponent CB's running circles.Kerr on the other hand was anonymus. How bereft the Matildas were of ideas was astounding.First signs of a upcomming slow fall down?

Other thing. Consider that Australia started this match with +3 GD over China (AUS needed only a draw to top the group) This GD partially was a result of ref errors. Previously in tourney Foord scored one goal from obvious offside while China had 2 proper goals not given - flaged offside. GD should've been 12-0 for Australia and 13-1 for China at the start of todays game. The draw would see China top the group. You could say that Steel Roses were robbed twice.
