My favorite place in the French Quarter (and not just because of the name, tho' it doesn't hurt!). 20200105_162820.jpg

When you ask the locals where to go, that's one of the places that they recommend. We hit it the last two times. Love, love, love the food. And one of the waitresses is from the Cape, and she loves it when people from New England show.

We went in for lunch literally minutes after the Saints lost. To say it was subdued would be an understatement.

NO seemed to mourn for another full day and by Tuesday or Wednesday it was all about LSU.

NE fans may or may not be more passionate that NO fans, but down there virtually everyone supports the Saints - some who admit to never watching the games. It's like a civic responsibility, whereas up here, there are plenty of people who couldn't care less about football (or maybe any other sport either).

Chicken and Andouille Gumbo was the soup of the day last time I was there (about 10 years ago and I think it was $3 or 3.50 a bowl). I remember well, because I believe I got two bowls and made a meal of it. :)
College football fans, especially in the South, win for both passion and % of local base being fans.

It's hard to really compare fan culture in various parts of the country--everyone seems to do it a little differently. While we east coast types (includes NY and Philly, not sure about Balitmore/DC) have no problem criticizing our own teams if we feel they are not up to snuff, in places like St. Louis or the west coast, they would never boo a player on their own team, no matter how bad.

The New Orleans thing seems like genuine civic pride, considering everything they went through in recent years with Katrina and all the rebuilding since then. Also, the fact that the Saints had been really bad for many, many years and then won the SB a few years ago and have been pretty good in the years since then helps.

College football (and basketball to a lesser extent) is a totally different animal in many other parts of the country. Unlike here, big-time teams enjoy support statewide, even though most people don't have any connection to the local U. It's more like soccer support in other countries. U of Nebraska isn't going to move to Kansas City because it's a bigger TV market and someone will build them a stadium with lots of luxury suites. They are a permanent part of the state/community.

In New Orleans, pretty much every business had some Saints 'stuff' and they love the 'French-ish' spelling of stuff (as do I), such as "Geaux Saints!".

And, they seemed to find the early playoff exit particularly painful, since they haven't gotten over getting bounced last year on a horrendous missed pass interference call (I can only imagine the persecution complex we'd have it had happened to us - Ben Dreith, anyone?).

But, laissez les bon temps roulez is a real thing and they seemed to bounce back pretty quickly.

I forgot what was on locally, but at my bar in NH, there are about 50 TVs. 4 huge screen ones, and then 60 inchers. There were two on the NCAA Football national championship game on Monday night. I laughed, thinking that only in the New England area would this be possible.

In general, college sports are ignored up here.

We're also parochial -- pro sports outside of New England teams are also much less popular here than in the rest of the country.

I was just thinking that Revs II will be playing against some established USL clubs, some with rabid supporters. Is fair to speculate that some of these clubs supporter's might have a much larger presence than Res II supporters at some games at Gillette?

The Revs II are playing in League One, which is only one year old. Of the few established clubs that moved to L1 last year, only Richmond (3,468) had an average home attendance of more than 1,000 in 2019. So I wouldn't worry too much about visiting supporters.

I'm not a big participant in the rebranding discussions, nor in the logo designs, etc.

...but for some reason this floated into my head recently....and stayed there....

If only the mgmt would own/step into a level of "daring", to shed the longstanding club marketing identity, and step into something very very different....

    ---------------------------------------------------------

If a rename were to happen -

(no "FC", nor "SC, nor "Real", nor "United", nor "Sporting" nor similiar in the name, please.)

    R E V O L U T I O N__A. F.

(in case you are reading it wrong, that's for Assoc Football...)

Unique name. (it would be an "American Original" name, for sure.)

Bold (I daresay edgy) choice. Fun to think of different interpretations. Interesting marketing possibilities - "Are YOU Revolution AF?"; "I'm Revolution AF", etc.)

My guess is that name alone would draw at least some passing interest from the youth-ish types. It would be a certain departure from the past and its norms and sensibilties.

And, I don't think anyone's sensibilities would really be offended....at least not in any way that it would adversely hurt the team's rep nor finances.

    --------------------------------------------
I'm just imagining a commercial/trailer, as part of rebranding, with all of the rogues gallery players in club history with each of them in order saying
    "I am Revolution A F"
and then mid-phrase cuts to voiceover as their hardest tackles or toughest ball wins or power goals are shown.

Ivan McKinley. Franchino. Rusty Pierce, JoGo, Jermaine, Shalrie, etc. Dimitri Imbongo red card elbows to head ALL shown rapid fire - all 3x, 5x, 10x, whatever the count is, rapid fire...you all know the list for tacklers.

Kamara's 13 foot leap in the air goal vs.DOOP. Twellman bicycle. Sunsing full field run vs Dallas Burn. Bou corner golazo, Beto half field goal, Parkhurst same half field, etc. - you know the list.

....and the trailer fades to black, and closes with black screen, no sound, just the question - "Are YOU Revolution AF?"

    -----------------------------------------------------
    Anyways, just a thought.

I lived in Canada for the past 6 years leading up to last May.
Ontario laws are very open. I realize MA laws are relatively cool too.
I live in NH where smoking weed is like punishable by death.
My random thought is, am I allowed to gas up blunts at the tailgate or is that gonna bring the federali's? If you recognize this post then yea its hop skip on twitter.

Nice shout-out from a few folks many of us know...

They could have gone into a bit more detail on how we lost all those MLS Cups. Sure, losing 5 finals is hard for any fanbase, but to lose one on a golden goal, another on a non-golden goal in overtime, another time to score the golden goal that would have won it in a previous format only to lose on PKs, and then 2 regulation losses, well, that's a bit hard to take!

Certainly possible this or similar stat has been posted here in the past, but I don't readily recall it.

I'm really hoping that Gil/Bou/Buksa troika generates "real" offense this season. It's been a long while since as fans we were used to legit, regular goal scoring from our attack.

Actually, only one was in regulation (07) - but even then we had the lead at halftime and blew it. 02 (golden goal AT HOME), 05 (extra time), 06 (penalties) and 14 (extra time) all came after regulation. We also lost the 01 Open Cup final and the 03 ECF in extra time and the 04 ECF on penalties. Our history is a mixture of bad seasons/ownership/teams, gut wrenching losses on the precipice of greatness, and a few magical moments sprinkled in. I've love-hated every minute of it.
