Sorry, tried to say this but wasn't explicit enough: his stats were good in his limited time in 2018-19, but he hasn't played a match in 10 months (March 17, 2019). If he thinks he's going to get a deal in MLS or a similar league without proving that he's healthy and still has ability, he's delusional.
I am just completely winging it here with no inside info, but he seems like a great candidate for the Canadian Premier League. Lower level than MLS, there are a few teams not far from Michigan, it's something different, etc
So sad that we really lost like a generation of talent to injuries. Rubin was REALLY tearing it up at utrecht. A lot of others as well... The Supernatural Generation Jk was our hex bag...
it's not clear they were anything special. They had potential but potential isn't realized talent. Every country deals with this, it's not just us.
He'd better hurry up . . . and adjust his expectations then. You're only as good as your last game, and his last game was (checks Transfermarkt) a 15 minute cameo in March, after which he was dropped from the squad entirely. If he couldn't make it at an Austrian yo-yo side, what makes him think he's good enough for MLS in 2020? You can see his perspective - he's already 28, which is a bit old for the playing-yourself-back-to-the-majors route - but if he has any other option I'd be very pleasantly surprised
Gatt’s speed was electric and he was a constant threat. You could tell from his play and from a lot of the stuff he said in interviews, though, that he was a victim of very low level coaching coming up. I think he had a lot of coaches who told him to run fast and score goals. Gatt had technical and tactical roadblocks to reaching the biggest leagues. We still could have used him for the USMNT. The guys coming up now are 10 years younger and the overall tactical improvement across the cohort is palpable. I agree that increased exposure to top teams helps. It stood out to me that a kid of Gatt’s generation had never heard of Solskjær.
A poor man's deAndre Yedlin in other words. From the very little I saw of him, his ceiling was the Championship mid-table, which would have given him about 200-250k a year after taxes and agents' fees. Doubt he made even 150k at his peak, and his wife's cancer treatment has probably wiped him out financially - if he's not actually underwater as a result. I'm glad I'm not in his shoes. Socialised medicine, the insurance variety anyway, does have something to recommend it after all.
Good news & bad news: Tonight's teams. The Dundalk side includes trialist Josh Gatt, a twice capped US international, who featured under current Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Molde pic.twitter.com/8Hm6cte2Jo— James Rogers (@jamesrogersie) February 4, 2020 Wouldn't be too concerned about the result tonight. Josh Gatt arguably the highlight and lowlight. The US trialist looked very good but the sight of him limping off was a definite concern, especially given his past knee injuries. Now for the real stuff. Rovers here on Sunday— James Rogers (@jamesrogersie) February 4, 2020 69 - He's been very good tonight but a concerning sight to see Josh Gatt being helped off by Danny Miller and Dr Connolly, especially given his history with knee injuries. Jamie Wynne on to replace him— James Rogers (@jamesrogersie) February 4, 2020
so depressing. at some point the body simply isnt willing. hopefully he can get fast tracked into coaching and stay involved with the game
The good news: Dundalk are defending champions and one of the league's strongest sides in recent years. The bad news: it's the League of Ireland. A strong USL side would pay better. Play better too
Signs with Dundalk: 📝 #DundalkFC have concluded a deal to sign American winger @JoshuaGatt, pending international clearance. The 28-year-old has received a work permit and has signed a short-term deal with the Lilywhites.https://t.co/zseXowrGE9📸 | @sportsfileben #CmonTheTown pic.twitter.com/fMOv6KtJEg— Dundalk FC (@DundalkFC) June 23, 2020
Google Ireland Premier League wage and it's not pretty. as of a few years ago, the top earner was on 44k euros. Most players supplement with part time jobs. Credit the guy with his determination, hopefully he can stay fit and find some form
BEYOND giving him credit. Dude has been through a LOT: his continual knee issues and his wife’s cancer. I’ve always rooted for Josh because he looked well on his way to being our NT right winger, but now I’m just rooting for him to play a healthy season! Go Gatt him, kid!
I'm not. Sorry, but I'm not. At 29* (Jesus, how time flies) he's hit his ceiling and a short-term deal in the League of Ireland is the best he can get? He'll be lucky to be grossing 1,500 a month with (shared) accommodation. It's time to face reality and hang up those boots before choosing between getting his coaching certificates or heading to school. To be clear, I 100% agree about his character in the face of adversity, but he needs to find another outlet for that character. Memories last a lifetime, but so does arthritis. * He turns 29 at the end of August
Apparently he has come back stronger and more solid physically than before. As for character, it takes a lot mentally as well as physically to come back after multiple injuries and rehab it perfectly. It will be interesting to see where that combination of determination, tactical talent, and speed can take him. Still rooting for him! If he isn't done, he isn't done!
I would expect a little more good natured positivity from someone who needs to live up to his username. It’s not a high level but Josh Gatt is due a healthy serving of Irish luck.
