Wagner and McKennie travel to Berlin to take on Klinsmann and Hertha. Schalke is still in the thick of things currently in 6th and holding onto a Europa league spot. A win could jump them back into CL territory. Hertha is in the 13th spot but is on the rise and has been making moves. Weston as a b-t-b RCM in a 4-3-1-2 with Mascarell as the #6 at the base, Serdar as the other tilted #8, and Harit as the #10 at the tip of the diamond. Wagner trots out our best midfield foursome. Klinsmann deploys his new 4-1-4-1 with Ascacibar, Herta's new DM acquisition protecting the back line. Ascacibar, 22, is in the mold of the modern DM (Kante, Tyler Adams) who are small but high work-rate, quick and aggressive attacking the ball. Should be a good one!
45+': McKennie takes nice little layoff 20' out slightly to the right, blasts one that looks headed to the lower far corner, defensive deflection down makes it a nasty unsaveable bouncing ball that goes just over for a corner. So close to a nice 1-0. Would have been one of those "merit" rather than "lucky" deflected goals.
McKennie Half time numbers 23 touches 83% of his challenges won 86% passes completed 6.2 km distance convered 29.9 km/h top speed
Klinsi is doing a decent job with Hertha, reinforcing the weak spots and making sure they always have two outlets in attack. Not bad.
McKennie was subbed out at 90' for Tobido. Defensive sub, could have just been trying for fresh legs.
Not the most exciting game. 😴⏱️ FT | #BSCS04 0-0 | #SchalkeUS🇺🇸 pic.twitter.com/4Fjd5vrJdo— Schalke 04 USA🇺🇸 (@s04_us) January 31, 2020
I thought I saw him clutching his shoulder after challenging for a ball near the offensive end line. This was around ten minutes before he came off. He was pretty uninvolved the rest of the way. Did anyone else notice this?
He needs someone good at free kicks. Otherwise, he's done well, making of Hertha a team that bores their rivals (and the few people watching) to death.
The two teams meet again midweek in Pokal @ Schalke. My guess is they park the tank. fun fact: 8 teams meet on Tue Feb 4 to contest Pokal. Only Kaiserslauten doesn't have American connection (I believe? ) Frankfurt / Leipzig Kaiserslauten / Fortuna Werder / Dortmund Schalke/ Hertha
