They Needed a Minivan but Got a Gio: Reyna at Nottingham Forest (Olf Borussia Dortmund)

I think most (including Gary) would have seen that the kid had significant potential. I think in this case and many here on BS, people see weaknesses in player and overstate their impact on potential. In Reyna's case, the things he needed to overcome were fairly simple. It is also easier to get a player to pass more when those around him are so much better. There is also the question of what coaches ask a player to do. I've always thought that the Dortmund coaches asked CP to take players on as it is so dangerous. CP's game has evolved and would guess it has more to do with what Lampard has asked from him than him improving. Similar in the case of Gio. I like that they see him more as a playmaker, but hopefully they still encourage him to take players on.

You are correct. I noticed that before.

It is and it isnt. He is on pretty much the same schedule as CP. Imagine if he has a 2021 for the national team like CP had when he was 18/19. I see these two as rare for the US due to their family situations, but hopefully there is more of this to come.

I mean if they are simple things to fix the guy who puts himself forward as an expert on coaching should probably be able to identify them as easy fixes

This is the second half of the Augsburg-Dortmund game. Reyna played the last 19 minutes.

If his contract is over in 1.5 years I'm betting he gets a reworked contract with a big pay bump and an extension this summer, assuming things keep working out. That's the same deal that Pulisic got.

Thats the thing.... I think pulisic had 2.5 years left, no?

I mean assuming he does well AND injury free (throw a harem of virgins down the volcano), it will be quite a precarious position come november 2020...

Fun. Also note that had Haaland squared the ball instead of going for (and converting) the hatter, we’d be celebrating Guo’s first goal in BL. That was a very good sequence for the kid- controlled the ball, made a good pass under pressure and then followed the play all the way down the field to be in the right place to be the other option on goal. Didn’t get the shot, but still a good football sequence from him.

Aside from the when... I am interested in where GB will play Reyna. He is getting senior minutes at right wing instead of in the midfield and I kind of like him there because he can hold the ball up and is pretty accurate with his shots on goal.

I have always been partial to BVB as they gave CP his start and they play an exciting brand of football.... also, they are not Bayern who I loathe. At any rate, those of us rooting for Reyna minutes need to be staunch BVB supporters right now so that Favre keeps his job. If he got fired then Reyna might not get the same opportunity he is getting right now.

I thought if he wasn't on the field we're not supposed to root for them. I learned that in the CP thread.

I'm sure GR can impress a new coach, unless that coach was blind of course.

Same was said by many about Puli. And he played under 4 coaches at BVB. Injuries and Sancho were his only problems.

Dortmund is great at propping up their youth players and sell to high bidder while its hot. it like Tesla and stock market in general. they are not long term investor. Swing/Day traders if you know what i mean. Its good for all sides i guess.

You do realize that our online fan support doesn't guarantee a win right? :p It's the guys on the pitch who guarantee that.

Lol, in the latest presser one of the local beat reporters really jumped on the hype train and suggested to Favre that perhaps Reyna might be considered a option to start on Friday, "given that Reus wasn't exactly outstanding in the last match". Oh, and they had separate English language press availability for the Norwegian press - where is the American media?

Does the media give any speculation about why Favre might be speaking this way about him, other than it may be that the kid actually has something?

It is surprising that Favre would be vocal about his thoughts on this one specific player. I haven't heard in the past him be so expressive publically about players.

For a 17yo kid playing in the Pittsburgh of Germany? Or is it the Detroit of Germany? Either way, I would be surprised that there is any American media interest in the kid outside of these boards and Gab Marcotti.

I love me some Gab (in the same way that I love Diet Coke and Bigsoccer), but someone needs to tell the guy to lay off the carbs. I'm sure his heritage probably doesn't help, but one worries about his longevity.

They are a long term developer. They just don't hold long term.

Better analogy might be biotech startups. They take all the development risk to develop a portfolio of new drugs. When one begins to show promise, they invest more on it to prove it will work, and then when it's evident to everyone just how valuable that drug can be, they sell it to big pharma for a lot of money.

Similar to players, the vast majority of these drugs don't go anywhere and just cost millions to the investors. Teams (and investment capitalists for that matter) have to have a little riverboat gambler in them when they take on the youth players.
