Perhaps. But more warm weather games mean the league can start earlier without hurting attendance as much. Aside from geographical balance/scope with more teams in the SE, Texas, & SW, the scheduling thing is real. Legit warm = 8. Miami, Orlando, LAG, LAFC, Houston, ATL (dome), VAN (dome), Austin. Warmish: (5). Dallas, Sacramento, Charlotte, Nashville, San Jose. Those 13 have average highs in the 60s (or higher). Phoenix & Vegas (or SD) would push it to 15/32. Throw in DC, Portland, & Seattle, and I think the cold weather home games can be minimized. And in July/August flip it a bit.
I've looked this up before, St. Louis, Cincinnati & DC have almost identical temperature throughout the year. Dec-Feb, DC is 5-7 degrees colder than Seattle / Portland. Mid 30's vs. Lower 40's. Don't know that i'd want to start the season in that weather. EDIT: to add KC is similiar as well.
After Portland & Seattle, DC is the next warmest spot, though not by much. No one is playing Dec/Feb. Avg high for DC in March is 56. Low was 38. Way doable. Still a snow risk early (unlike Port/Sea). Montreal, Toronto, NE, Minny, Denver, Columbus. Nightime in early March can easily by snow. Or worse, 35 & rain.
The earliest the MLS season will start is the week after the Super Bowl for week one. This season they are starting Feb 29th and they could move that up by 3 weeks. That takes the Cup game to early to mid Oct. The goal would be avoid as much of the NFL and college football seasons as possible.
Wait, I thought there was going to be a pause, and now there is a 2/5 deadline for proposals? Shocked I is. Just shocked.
True dat. There have been Feb starts before. And if Garber gets this asinine mid-season Mex thing, they will need more room. Or they could start earlier & play 36 games.
Was replying to your post re: temperatures, and the notion put forth by redcard(?) Of going to a fifa calendar. Just pointing out that a wide swath of cities all have similar weather that is not conducive to a Aug-May calendar.
2/5 is the deadline for Las Vegas City Council to negotiate with the prospective ownership group to buy the Lights and present a stadium project funding proposal for the Cashman area. It’s specific to Las Vegas and backdates to June. It was extended from December. Not an MLS deadline.
I don't believe they ever will either. As I had posted many times on the boards though, I wouldn't mind seeing the league begin in the bye week before the Super Bowl (I.E this weekend) and maybe having the season end in September or October. It could help with transfers and it wouldn't really be all that conflicting with too many sports. You can have the cold weather teams either play indoors at home or on the road in hotter climates with bye weeks here and there. European teams start play in August and September, play 2-3 games and then take national team bye weeks during warmer or the first three months of the season so I'm sure MLS could do the same thing on an opposite schedule. It seems to me, they are already doing that starting on February 29th 2020.
Sitting here in Cincinnati on the 22nd of January with a low of 14 and a high of 41, my first thought is why hasn't it snowed yet this winter? No snow likely before February 1. A little more CO2, and maybe we can go to the fifa calendar [emoji12]. Anyhow, the crazy talk is the suggestion that a team is going to play a game in a stadium that isn't theirs just because it's cold outside. That's just a little more crazy than starting the season with a four or six game road trip. Weather here in March isn't optimal, but the normal worst case is 40F and rain. It's annoying, London weather. Maybe a 3 pm start like in London might help. Anyhow, it's likely our first home game won't be on the first day of the season. Mid March is more reliable. The Reds opening day us normally pretty nice. The other side of the coin, aside from Thanksgiving weekend (my daughter played in a tournament for a couple of years that weekend, and it was always cold and rainy... The boys tournament the following weekend was always sunny and warm) it's typically pretty decent until around Christmas. 2015 MLS Cup in Columbus was decent weather... Upper 40s, partly cloudy. So, for the most part, March to December is fine.
Done by design. Either Vegas ownership can handle a much heftier expansion fee than say Sacramento or stl. If it’s a 500 billion give it take entry and they pony up, mls ain’t saying no also more here https://www.fox5vegas.com/sports/pu...cle_0e73a886-3b4b-11ea-9ac5-e35bd3da4885.html
Heck no. I was almost laughing at the idea that low 40's/high 30s is too cold. We play in that every year until May (the frost date here is May 15). MLS always so kindly gives us 6-8 home games by then. If you tried to play through the winter, it would be MUCH colder. Hell, it was 15 the other night. That is insane. However, what you can do with more warm weather cities is move stuff up a bit, schedule with climate in mind, and play more midweek, you can come pretty close to observing most FIFA dates instead. We have been moving in that direction.
If teams played weekly, the northern teams would have their first 6 games or so on the road. That's too many.
Well maybe but you could also work it so they play 2 or 3 games on the road and have a few or even one bye week.. That's 4-5 weeks right there. The Earthquakes last year had a 2 & 1/2 bye week in June, a 1 & 1/2 bye in September along with two 3 road trips during August and September, during he hotter months of the year. Considering they lost all those games on the road trips and missed the playoffs because of it, I don't see how that is much better.

You don't get that draconian about it. Northern teams still get home games in March/April or early May. But you do it less. Columbus had, I believe, 8 home matches in that timeframe last year. That is insane. Instead of 8, try 3-4.
Latest on @CityOfLasVegas talks w/ development group on downtown Cashman plan/new @MLS stadium proposal: city attorney wants up to $150,000 to pay legal consultanthttps://t.co/c1MmiBly1h@lvlightsfc @LasVegasLocally @CouncilmanCrear @NLLcommish #DTLV @TheSportsnista @sports8 pic.twitter.com/RHDcAg61mi— LVSportsBiz.com (@LVSportsBiz) January 30, 2020 I would presume this to be a positive development for the Baupost Group’s potential agreement with the Las Vegas City Council, that the city needs $150,000 to pay some lawyers to draft documentation.
We anticipate having an item on the Feb. 19 #lvcouncil agenda that, if approved, would take the next step forward with the Renaissance Companies to work toward bringing a @MLS franchise to our community. pic.twitter.com/isj5hMIcRj— City of Las Vegas (@CityOfLasVegas) January 30, 2020 The transaction includes multiple agreements that, if approved by the City Council, would result in the continued pursuit of an MLS franchise. I was standing in the center circle at noon at the Earthquakes stadium on Wednesday January 22nd , 2020 at a company function. Even though it rained a little the night before and the field was a little e soggy, the sun on the field was pretty warm and the weather was perfect to play soccer in. If they can’t start the week before the Super Bowl, they can probably start the week after and have cold weather teams play 3 games on the road, take a bye week and start playing home games in March. Seems to me that is what they are doing already. FC Cincinnati for example, is playing two different 3 game road trips in May and July. I don't see how that is better.
