Any chance that USL Championship applies for D1 status one day? I mean, there's still lots of US cities much larger than European cities/town who have D1 clubs in smaller stadiums. Maybe pro/Rel goes through the USL?

That would be fun. The potential (below MLS) is there for all those areas who will never see an MLS franchise. USL always had potential, just not in Canada

I thought I've read somewhere that MLS was considering a MLS reserve league...I could be wrong

Didn't USL intended to relegate all MLS reserves to USL One? That would be a smart move... then what do you do with the affiliate?

CPL has a zero tolerance even for affiliate which made the relationship with Ottawa Fury* difficult from the get go

*Rumours now points to Atletico Madrid being the money behind the Ottawa CPL club

I think the league might need a "Top 5" like commissioner with a bigger vision. That's why I was puzzled with them not making money on all those guys leaving the league for new clubs. It would be a much different league...

Also, US medium markets are big markets in Canada and most of Europe, there's money to be made there if done right.

Hope they figure it out, CPL is a good blueprint. The right business model, identity, being different and TV deal. The rebranding was a good start in my opinion

This loss won't make things any easier.

So the B team of a NT that couldn't make it to the Euro beat the #6/#7 team in C-CAF in the USA, when they needed a win desperately.

Doesn't speak highly of the region at all. Iceland would make the Hex here, and would be a candidate to win it or finish second.

Maybe the Europeans who poke fun at CONCACAF have a point.

This was definitely Canada's B team as well. It's no shock that they have better depth than we do. Also, we played lots of U23.

Lack of maturity in my opinion. The potential is still there, Drogba was a huge fan of his talent and tried to convince him to commit to Ivory Coast over Canada

Canadian Premier League is trying something else to get young internationals into the league

    • Scout young internationals (age 23 and under) from around the world
    • Create a database of internationals, with the aim of placing players from it with CPL clubs.
    • The database of internationals will be fluid over the course of 2020, as new players will be added and signed to pre-contracts before being made available to all CPL clubs simultaneously.
    • Teams will have to compete with one another over players, and sign them on a first come first serve basis.

No way. They need a striker (Giovinco replacement). They already have 2 DP's in Pozuelo and Jozy. Toronto's real problem is passing out of the back when Gonzo gets paired with Mavinga and Ciman isn't playing. Take Bradley out and it's more of a problem. Fraser isn't quite consistent enough passing but let's hope he gets there. Maybe he just needs reps.

This looks to be the 1st signing by the CPL of a youth International using their new database. Amazing to witness the league doing things right this early

Canadian Premier League MVP Tristan Borges just got sold to Belgium for $300k which can go up to $500k
This is huge validation for the CPL and should increase its attractiveness to young Canadian talent aspiring to the National team and playing overseas.

It gets only better from here

After some digging, this is the club situation
    • The team is already qualified for promotion playoffs finals having won the fall season
    • Winning the winter season would mean automatic promotion to The top league
    • Qualified for Europa League Playoffs
    • Better finances, stadium, academies and structure than half the existing clubs currently in D1
    • Same ownership as Leicester City
    • They requested Borges be transferred immediately to help the club promote. He had his 1st training with the club today.
    • Montreal Impact wanted him but the Belgium club was willing to pay more.
    • Larin & David success in the top league has the Belgium league very interested in CPL and Canadian talent
    • 90% of the transfer goes to the club and 10% to the league as they help make the deal happen
