    Nationwide is on Crew's side.

I don't necessarily think, at this late phase, it needs to be a local company. Everyone's money spends the same.

I'm also resigned to defeat here (which is out of character for me). Columbus will be without a shirt sponsor in 2020. That's a massive miss for Bez and especially Steve Lyons - who has been touted as having one of the most extensive rolodexes in the city. I'm more surprised by this than I would have been had we not signed a DP.

Same old Columbus: Always one adjustment away from relevant.

If that happens, I'd agree. But I can't seriously imagine we don't have a shirt sponsor lined up. This will be a multi year deal, which means this sponsor benefits from the increased exposure of the new stadium, not to mention a completely different approach and commitment to marketing - we've all seen and commented on it - by the organization. The new sponsor will see its logo splashed across screens, billboards and other platforms to a far greater extent than Acura ever enjoyed.

Now, maybe the FO has an absurdly high opinion of what such a sponsorship is worth. Could be. But I assume they're just in the final stages of nailing down a deal. Maybe Inside Man has some rumors he could share...

Oh, and, yesterday's Dispatch piece about this could have been written two months ago. It was a completely substance-less filler piece.

I agree with what you’re saying.
Also, thank you for summarizing the Dogpatch article. It allowed me to not give them a click.

Well, I have to say that it's somewhat concerning that the MLS 2020 uniform rollout is scheduled for Feb 5 but the article announcing the end of the Acura deal says that they hope to have a new shirt sponsor by opening day in March.

So what is going to be on the front of the Crew uniform that the league unveils on Feb 5? "This Space for Rent"? "Your Ad Here"?

I suppose it's possible they're playing it close, planning on a big gala announcement for Crewsmas, but that seems unlikely. The more realistic likelihood is that they dont have one.

If they dont I agree that it's a huge black eye and frankly calls the entire project into question.

Kroger is based in Cincy. I think you need to narrow the focus some. Plus I think Les is still pissed about not having the stadium at Easton, so L Brands is out (or does he not own that anymore?).

Columbus is home to 14 or 15 Fortune 1,000 companies, and more have a ton of employees here (JP Morgan/Chase).

Locals: Abercrombie & Fitch, AEP, Big Lots, Cardinal Health, DSW, Express, Greif, Hexion, Huntington, L Brands, Mettler Toledo, M/I Homes, Nationwide, Scotts/Miracle Gro, Worthington Industries.

    Notable others: Wendy's, White Castle.

Scotts would actually make a lot of sense. I mean, I have no idea if they have any interest in sports marketing of this nature (jersey sponsorship), though they have been a team sponsor for years and have had a decade long major sponsorship with Major League Baseball. Much of what they sell is stuff that viewers and fans buy. Makes sense.

If they don't have one for this season, I think it would be cool if they put the Jonathan Mensah Foundation on the front. What he does in his home country for orphans is really really awesome. If the team could help him elevate his support, it's a win at the very least from a public perception and goodwill.

We could have special section for the ladies to win tix. The Sybian seats. Every time the Crew scores, the dial gets turned up. This would totally be acceptable right?

Didn’t teams with no jersey sponsor used to just have the club name on the front? I seem to recall the sponsor-less Crapids with “Rapids” on the front of their jersey.

I like the idea of the Jonathan Mensah foundation getting used in lieu of a blank space, even if temporary.

Of the lists posted by others, I’d think a potential sponsor with a national footprint would be more likely to plunk down cash. I mean, I’d be fine with Worthington Industries being the jersey sponsor, but why would they want to be, since they are mostly unknown outside of Ohio.

And I know money is money, but I’d rather not have “Greif” on the front of our shirt. The only thing worse would be “Bimbo.”

Originally, sponsors were on the back of the jersey.... It was a fairly long time before Columbus Crew showed up on a Crew jersey. Originally it was the logo and a player number on the front.

Didn't I see somewhere that MLS was considering maybe even approved sponsorship on the sleeve of jerseys? Didn't they do that with national sponsors in the early years? Snickers rings a bell. I think NBA has toyed with jersey sponsorship too.
