I don't think it's too soon. Seems like we (I) overanalyze these situations so much, that I think we really need to just use the most obvious answer. Like the above poster said, this wasn't about making US friendly dollars. He's not playing with a bunch of backups, and was just promoted to the team. I don't see why he wouldn't be getting some sub minutes in the near future. Pretty remarkable rise here, even if people were already high on him when he first made the move.
Word. We certainly shouldn't expect him to burst onto the scene this weekend and become a starter down the stretch. He will likely be a bench player for the remainder of the season.... getting mop-up duty and maybe a couple of starts. This is already a fantastic place to be in at his age and considering the wealth of talent they have. The fact that BVB currently has two significant injuries on D right now and they gave a slot to a 17 year-old offensive player speaks volumes. He should get playing time... but I don't expect a ton of minutes unless a forward goes down to injury. Next season is where we should see his minutes go way up if all settles into place.
Just for context... Pulisic had 12 appearances between Bundesliga and Europa League for 433 in the second half of the 15/16 season.
Reyna to start yo-yoing between first team bench and u19 after winter break!!!! Aka pulisic model! According to kicker https://www.kicker.de/767142/artikel/bvb_startet_mit_reus_und_haaland_in_die_augsburg_woche It is planned that Reyna, who was in the matchday squad for the 5-0 victory over Düsseldorf for the first time, should regularly participate in the training of the professionals. If he is not used in the Bundesliga team, he should collect at the U19 game practice. However, it is not excluded that he will soon be able to celebrate his Bundesliga debut in the second half of the season. The most recent impressions were too promising. "Gio is someone who is very far, who is mentally very fit. He plays carefree, with a certain amount of self-confidence. But outside the field he is very down-to-earth," says Otto Addo, who is responsible for the upcoming talent at BVB as a special coach. "I like that very much. I only discuss details with him. Gio does a lot of things very well." Favre was also impressed by the qualities of the US talent in Marbella
It makes you wonder how much input Favre has in promoting Reyna. I believe these types of decisions happen at a higher level than the manager, which was the same dynamic that caused friction with Tuchel. What happened to our resident BVB fan? He's disappeared since Pulisic left.
I think the club has figured out by playing starlets earlier than other big clubs they inflate their values. Dembele, Pulisic and Sancho are examples of players who have been or will be sold for far more than they ever would have if they were at clubs that bring players along more slowly. An argument could be made that they care less about winning trophies than they do making an absolute killing in the transfer market. A counter argument could be made that they would never come close to challenging for trophies if not for their reputation for giving minutes to young players that allows them to recruit guys like Dembele, Pulisic and Sancho in the first place.
This is a little game I always like to play when I hear someone repeat that narrative: Name a key player/clear starter in the last decade (after BVB got their finances in order and eliminated their debt) whose sale was initiated by Dortmund for the sake of maximizing profits instead of competing for trophies. So far, I've never gotten an answer to that question.
By agreeing to sell Dembele for an incredible sum, BVB more than maximized profits, supermaximized them, in fact. They didn't have to sell. It is totally irrelevant and a straw man as to whether BVB or the buyer initiated the contact leading to the sale.
Are you suggesting that players that play more are worth more than players that play less? That's wild.
I agree, but also remember they sold for at waay overpriced values and their players demb, auby, protested, as well. Sancho will be an interesting case. The "current value" is 100€. Which means 200 million will be offered or something offendingly vulgar along those lines.
It's not a strawman, it's the entire point of the baseless argument that it's BVB's business model to put a larger financial profit above having success on the field. Sure, they might have gotten the max for Dembele and Pulisic in the end but they would have preferred to keep them, same for Sancho. But you can't work with players who act like children (Dembele) and eventually you have to let players go whose minds are elsewhere.
Maybe this is a stupid question, but if a supporter-owned club makes a profit and doesn't reinvest it into the club, what do they do with it? Do the members get dividends or something?
Dembele is a little different, the guy went on strike essentially. They basically had to sell unless they wanted to keep him against his will.
can hype trains melt steel tracks? how are we supposed to temper our enthusiasm when this is out there 1217802869774090240 is not a valid tweet id
Google Translate: Press conferences with Lucien Favre are usually not the most informative. The Swiss rarely gives an insight into his world of ideas and almost rarely expresses concrete things about personnel issues. On Thursday, the head coach deviated from his usual script when it came to Giovanni Reyna. "He's not just a candidate, he's definitely in the squad," the instructor said. The 17-year-old offensive player can therefore hope for his professional debut. The son of ex-professional Claudio Reyna, who is active in Wolfsburg, among others, had been in the squad for the first time in the 5-0 win over Fortuna Düsseldorf. He made a good impression at the training camp in Marbella. Favre is said to have raved internally about the American, reports the Bild newspaper. High praise from Ricken and Zorc The fact that they hold large pieces on Reyna in Dortmund is not a new finding. Lars Ricken showered him with great praise already in the summer. "Giovanni is one of the outstanding midfield talents of his year," said the BVB junior manager at the time about Sport Bild. Michael Zorc also found words of praise in the press conference before the game against FC Augsburg. "Gio [that's what they call Reyna at BVB, editor's note. Red.] Already made an excellent impression in the summer. That will give new impetus to the entire squad. " Similar path to Pulisic When it comes to technology and gaming intelligence, Reyna is considered an outstanding talent for his age. Sports director Zorc also attests to his above-average physicality, thanks to which he should be able to assert himself in a duel with experienced professionals. The comparison with Christian Pulisic, whose career at Borussia Dortmund began similarly to Reyna, is obvious. Today the winger plays at Chelsea FC. Pulisic shows a greater dynamic in his game, his younger compatriot is considered a player with greater strategic skills. Greater talent than the compatriot? If you talk to connoisseurs of the scene, it can be heard in surprising frequency and clarity that many observers regard Reyna as a greater talent than Pulisic. The 21-year-old made his BVB debut against FC Ingolstadt on January 30, 2016. It is quite possible that the star of the next American top talent will rise with the black and yellow on Saturday. In any case, it is noteworthy that Favre does not cling to his usual reluctance at Reyna.
I am hoping against hope that we don’t have a BS pissing contest over our biggest talent. I’ve already seen some posters try to take Pulisic down in comparison to Landon....
You talking about me? Im the huge BVB fan. I love Gio and hope he doesnt go through Pulisics model of moves and sticks around but I certainly wouldnt discourage it. I think GIo has the potential to be one of the better US attacking mids ever. Ive met his dad a few times and they have another son who is supposed to be even better.
