Score after 90 minutes was 1-1, but perhaps you knew 2nd goal, he had the near side covered but no GK can react to a well placed shot from 5 yards out. 3rd if he's too aggressive going through the attacker it's a PK, if the D can't prevent ball movement in the goalmouth it's a problem for any keeper
Is this the award that's never been given to the greatest goalkeeper in MLS history? ; ) If we're going to talk about market value, Hamid's complete collapse in the playoff game, while admittedly is overanalyzed, would have to impact that. A club is going to look at how a goalkeeper does under pressure and Hamid's most recent performance was anything but reassuring. He's been coughing up a lot of rebounds all year but I don't think he caught a shot all game clean, iirc. The €2 million mark sounds fair for Hamid but for a goalkeeper who has yet to have a transfer fee over $0, I'd be surprised if FCM received any money for their backup goalkeeper.
Plus his almost complete lack of international experience. If he had 20+ caps, that would change the math.
Bill Hamid says he wants to return to D.C. United next season. In limbo at moment after 2019 loan from Danish club Midtjylland. Negotiations expected to heat up. "This place means everything to me. I want to be here." #dcu #mls— Steven Goff (@SoccerInsider) October 30, 2019
Sucks that it didn't turn out much better. He seems to be in the best form of his life and I surely hope he returns to fight for that no.1 spot. I wonder if the lack of NT recognition might play a role in his return to DK or staying in DC.
Well, despite of his age, FCM extended the contracct of 1st keeper Jesper Hansen last week, so I suspect this is why Hamid no longer wat to return.
Looks like a permanent move back to DC could be close. https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2019/11/25/dc-united-close-deal-retain-goalkeeper-bill-hamid/
Now THAT'S a good bit of business, right there: let him go on a free, and buy him back from Midtjylland for $750K.
On the other hand it fits perfectly with the FCMoneyball way of doing business ... FCM pick up players very cheap or for free, if they know they will be able to sell them later on ... and since they can't use 40-50 players, they send them out of loan until a club is ready to make a bid.
Sucks that he couldn't have gotten a loan elsewhere in the league. He def has the talent to do well in Denmark or even the 2 Bundesliga.
It's not easy to get a job as 1st keeper in the Superliga .... The club I support, AGF Aarhus have had several foreign keepers on short contracts and on loan the past few years and the only one who was able to become an instant success was the Polish U-21 NT keeper Kamil Grabara who was on loan from Liverpool, but impossible to get on a permanent deal with Liverpool demanding almost $15 million for him ... and then to some extend the Serbian NT reserve keeper Aleksandar Jovanovic who has been in and out at AGF both on loan and a permanent deal, but was sold to the Spanish LaLiga2 side SD Huesca for €1 million. FC København only want Scandinavian NT keepers, for the most part Swedish NT 1st or 2nd keepers, because Danish NT keepers are more difficult to get. while Brøndby I have already mentioned, because they first sold their NT keeper Lukas Hradecky to Frankfurt and then also later his replacement at Frankfurt, the Danish NT 3rd keeper Frederik Rönnow, around the time when Hamid was also rumored to Frankfurt. but they are also almost only into Scandinavian keepers and of lately (with little success) a German. And then I think that Hamid otherwise would be considered too expensive by most of the other Superliga clubs because he is neither a young possible sales object or they already got a solid keeper. I mean, the Hobro keeper Jesper Rask was considered among the worst (if not actually the worst) among 1st keepers in the Superliga only a year or so ago, and he is hardly paid all that much, but if you have watched the Hobro highlights in the Sabbi thread, even he has been looking highly solid, making it both silly and way too expensive to replace him.
Everything that happened to him was mostly self inflicted. Obviously injuries can't be helped but he decided to stay comfortable in DC instead of challenging himself in Europe. He waited too long to take that leap and made a bad club decision. If he had been younger when making that bad decision he could recover but a keeper doesn't get sub mins so he ran back to DC. He is never going to be #1 for the national team, hell he probably won't even make the bench anymore and I think he realizes that now.
I haven’t seen Bill that much but I have the impression that he is old fashioned in that he’s a good shot stopper but not particularly talented in passing the rock. It’s pretty easy to criticize others for not going abroad while posting from Moms basement in the good old USA.
So, so many fans have this weird idea that athletes belong to them. This isn't an internet thing; Bill James wrote brilliantly people's reactions to Bo Jackson trying to play 2 sports in the 80s. It's his life.
But why did he wait that long? Would he have been ready in 2015 or even earlier? All those trials with PL clubs and yet nothing came from it.
While VBC's post is stupid, I don't think it erases the point that Hamid should have gone abroad when he was younger so he could 1) afford to sit a little bit, unlike an older gk and 2) actually earn a transfer fee, since he would have been younger, so his new club would have had incentivization to play him. I don't think anyone can be surprised that FCM didn't utilize a player they paid $0 for. Idk why Hamid took forever to try Europe. Perhaps it was Hamid's sluggishness or DC being unwilling to let him go or something else. Who knows. But whatever the reason - only a handful of people know and I'm not one of them - Hamid hanging around in MLS then trying to make a jump five years too late made it a ridiculous hill to climb.
Probably some combination of not enough money on the table and not enough of a push to go overseas. For example, if DC *really* wanted to make a buck off Hamid, they would have, and I think their spending habits have shown they'd rather him be in DC than elsewhere. I mean, Josh Cohen (a USL gk) just went to Israel. Yes, passports play a factor but if you're good enough to warrant a European club bringing you in, which I think Hamid was at one point, then there are better options to peruse than sitting on the bench at FCM. For a gk who trained in Europe multiple times and had the talent to do so, Hamid's time in Europe should have been more productive.
One would have hoped that the legacy of Yanks in the PL should have helped him have some options in the PL or Championship (years ago). Though, the whole work permit thing would have squashed that.
