that sounds like a wonderfully structured transfer fee for nycfc. also a ton of money for a guy that looked pretty mediocre at the u17s, though i guess those big tournaments matter a lot less now that so much more scouting is available? also how great is it having a 12/31 birthday for winter transferring at 18?!
Wow that’s way more money than I thought he’d command, even before the incentives kick in. Hopefully we use him while we’ve got him next season...
Yup let’s hope they see something more in him than most of us have. Anyone have an idea what their transfer fees look like for their starting 11 players? I’m guessing his $2m is about 25% of what you’d expect to see transfer fee wise from one of their starters coming into BM.
Borussia have completed the signing of Joseph Scally from MLS club @NYCFC. The 16-year-old fullback will join the club in January 2021. #DieFohlen pic.twitter.com/YyWMiuca7I— Gladbach (@borussia_en) November 13, 2019
One thing that strikes me odd... usually these kind of deals aren't finalized until the player is 18 (even if everything has been agreed to ahead of time). Considering FIFA doesn't allow players to register before age 18 in this situation, is signing players this far ahead of time the next trend?
Potentially. I remember Real bought Vinicius a year+ before turning 18. Seems like a shrewd move to pull off. Hope this happens more.
What would you expect to know? Was on u17 team. Was injured for a while before that. Plays right back. Got some preseason run with nycfc before injury in a few games
At least the following, at a minimum: Where were you 24 hours ago when we really needed this information?
Sometimes I wonder whether going to Europe as a youth is the best way to get on the USMNT.... because I think GB and the rest of the brass view the MLS higher than everything in Europe save the top divisions in England, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Holland.... e.g. they think that MLS > English Championship. The MLS has improved and I would obviously rate it higher than Youth Europe Leagues and some 2nd tiers... but better than the Championship? I don't think so. At any rate, another USMNT hopeful to keep an eye on in the near future.... That being said, they have him listed as a right back and that is one of our deepest positions.
Moving to BL is, I think, a wise decision versus other top Euro leagues. Lots of recent examples of US youth succeeding (to the tune of $72mm) there, so that league seems more willing to take chances on US youth. It's a good set up.
From a "body type" perspective, I wouldn't expect him to be a CB, ultimately. But we'll see. Good luck to him.
He’s actually tall for a fullback at 6’0” and might not be done growing since he doesn’t turn 17 for another month.
