Does anyone know about the dual status of Kenneth Taylor? I'm just going off his name but he looks a decent player.
He's not listed as such. I even have no clue if it's even possible to have both Uk and Dutch nationality. Afaik it isnot possible, as some weeks ago there was talk about Dutch parliament making an emergency law to make it possible to have both the Uk and a Dutch passport in relation to cases emerging from Brexit.
I don't think you can, not unless you have dual citizenship by marriage or something. The FIFA rules require that you hold citizenship of the country you want to represent.
Couldn’t someone like Appiah be eligible for England and Holland without necessarily holding citizenship of both countries?
I don't believe so. As far as I understand it, Appiah will have lost his Dutch citizenship as soon as he gained British citizenship, and both are a prerequisite for someone to be eligible for both countries. He could renounce his British citizenship and retake his Dutch citizenship in order to become eligible for the Netherlands though, presumably.
For what it's worth, there are situations where a Dutch national can be a dual national of another country, but it seems unlikely that any of those situations would apply to Taylor or Appiah. Not that we have any good reason to think Taylor has an English connection anyway, less still that he's interested in pursuing it.
Out of interest if this were the case would Jonathan De Guzman for instance have had to renounce his Canadian citizenship to become Dutch or did they just decide to make a personal exception for him because he's a good footballer? Might start a petition to pass this law in the U.K, it would definitely cut down the granny rule attrition, though wouldn't work with the Welsh I guess.
No special treats for JtG. He simply was 5+ years in the Netherlands, so he was qualified for a Dutch passport/Dutch citizenship. He as a Canadian wasnot obliged to renounce his Canadian citizenship when he got the Dutch nationality.
Are you sure about that? A few old articles suggest that he did give up his Canadian passport to get a Dutch one.
Canada is one of the countries that doesnot require you to give up your nationality when you get another one.
https://www.rijksoverheid.nl/onderw...nneer-kan-ik-een-dubbele-nationaliteit-hebben Nope. I think the misunderstanding came up as a result of the Brexit problems Dutch have, living in the UK and tied to the UK because of economic etc. reasons. The Dutch parliament was pondering an exception to these Dutch, because they would be forced to either become Brits and lose their Dutch nationality or stay Dutch with the problems after Brexit. Normally a Dutch chosing another nationality loses the Dutch nationality. J de Guzman was the other way around. He got his nationalisation after being 5+ years in the Netherlands, but afaik Canada doesnot require him to drop his Canadian nationality and Canada is one of the countries the Netherlands allow to keep as a second nationality.
Oh, I understood it wrong. Yup. The rule is that when you're not required to keep your first nationality, you have to give it up when you get the Dutch one. Hence the special law in the making for Dutch in the UK that are forced to choose between a UK passport or to keep the Dutch, which both gives them huge problems.
Right. I mean, I'm not claiming to know, but I'm not sure by what route he'd have been able to keep it. From the (possibly inaccurate) Google translation of the article you just linked, it isn't obvious to me that any of the exceptions apply to him.
Well, it's confusing stuff, as another site listed Canada as a country that the Dutch allow to keep the nationality of, but other sites claim otherwise. I guess the last site I posted has the correct rules and you drew the right conclusion.
Here's the site of a Dutch gouvernment part that deals with the nationalities issues: https://ind.nl/Paginas/Landenlijst-behoud-nationaliteit.aspx Canada is dealt with according to this quote: Canada Geen automatisch verlies. U kunt afstand doen van de Canadese nationaliteit. Krijgt u geen vrijstelling van afstand doen? Dan moet u afstand doen van uw Canadese nationaliteit. Canada No automatic loss. You can renounce the Canadian nationality. You can't get exemption of renouncing? Then you are obliged to renounce your Canadian nationality. The more often I read it, the more blurred my brain gets.
