It should never have been a red. It was a poor challenge but not a terrible tackle (just one with awful consequences). The card was upgraded to red on the day because of the consequences and not for the challenge itself which should have been the sole focus of the review.

This is also another blot on VAR. The original decision was a yellow, it was then re-refereed for several minutes, changed to a red and then days later ultimately reversed back to the original and correct decision. What then is the point of VAR as it currently exists?

Probably one of those we'll have to agree to disagree on but I'm glad that common sense prevailed even if it does benefit that lot.

This is good info. I thought the ankle went with the challenge, but having watched, it's the collision afterwards with Aurier I believe. So I can see why it was rescinded. I still think it was a retaliatory challenge and think this would have been an orange if they existed because without his dumbass lunge it wouldn't have happened.

So I appreciate the info here as I went back and watched this.

To improve the chances of getting any given important decision right, and increase the overall amount of correct important decisions in any given match, which it actually does.

But to your earlier point, the fact remains that the way these refs are using VAR isn't good enough, and both the referees and the rules themselves need to better adjust to the very existence of VAR. The offside or handball rules which rule out some very nice-looking goals which we are all trained to think of as "good goals"... I mean, it's not VAR's problem that it spots things that refs don't, in fact that's what it's there for.

As far as the binary "did X happen" calls are concerned, they're basically getting them all right. The major issues are that some calls aren't binary -- judgement of levels of contact, and dangerous intent, they require interpretation, and that's where actual ref's decisions are going to factor in. On top of that, the rulebook isn't tailored to quite this level of scrutiny. Firmino or Son or Sterling being offside by a centimeter (or less) is the correct call, but because of the entire history of the game they don't "look" right. They look like good goals. But they're not. The fix for that isn't to throw the baby out with the bathwater and allow all the other shitty calls which VAR has effectively eliminated back into the game... rather, I think the answer has to be to figure out what an illegal offside or handball SHOULD look like, and have the rulebook specifically call that out as clearly as possible.

    ???

An entire substitute squad, Lallana at defensive mid, and a new back 5 with 2 teenagers? Missing a few pieces beyond VVD there.

******** Deschamps who has selected Kante to pay against European powerhouses Moldovia and Albania. One thing to not care about Clubs, but to risk ********ing up one of yours and a key player against those two to prove a point:mad:o_O:mad:

France should repay us half his salary thus far for missed games for being uncaring idiots last break, of course Sarri was an idiot for playing him in Europa Cup rather than shutting him down so he could recover over Summer and start season fresh.

I find the analysis intolerable so just skip it altogether. I never have hugely high expectations from the studio pundits but I do enjoy a breakdown of the match. With the team b/r assembled it's just offensively bad.

No-one will ever duplicate the grace and insights of Ron Manager though. Small boys. In the park. Jumpers for goalposts. Giggsy wiggsy. Isn't it? Mmmm.

It's really too bad in regards to BR because Tim Howard (who I like) and he's a decent sidekick to a game broadcast and Stu Holden (who I like, just inst good) in this format. Honestly, BR needs to be binned. CBS is one of 4 marquee (really 3) if you ask me stations in the US. This is huge news for US viewers.

An Eric Dier yellow card at the 2 minute mark means there will be an Eric Dier red card today!

Was hoping for a draw but Vardy’s scores two and Arsenal are looking bad.

Watching this game and I’m slowly realizing that maybe selling Luiz was a good idea.

Also, I’ve seen some bad hairstyles in this sport but nothing will ever top Camoranesi or Bale. Vardy’s is up there though.

How did not VAR catch that hand ball, 2 beauty goals, if Salah still played for us he would have been microscopically off sides

Ha. No wonder liverpool fans like var. Handball and offside that have already been called these past couple of weeks for other teams get nothing at Anfield.

They are playing well and look good but ffs var is broken.

That first goal was a beauty though. Sweetly struck. Reminded me of when riise used to smack em.

On the VAR question I'd like to see a maximum of, say, 30 seconds for them to make a decision as was suggested last night on MOTD. Although MOTD pundits are usually pretty dumb they're spot-on in this case.

Leaving aside any improvement to the viewing experience for the crowd in the ground and on TV, (although I think they're both important, tbh), if it takes MORE than 30 seconds it obviously isn't THAT much of a 'clear and obvious' error, is it.

It took almost 4 minutes for them to make a call for offside yesterday . They showed it on the screen and it was FAR from clear.

I think the way var worked for salahs goal was exactly how it should work. Didnt take too long and despite what looked to be a marginal offside it wasn't clearly offside so stood. Perfect. Why this wasn't the way it worked as long ago as yesterday is entirely the problem.

We have replaced one form of inconsistency with another form of inconsistency whilst also downgrading the experience of fans who actually pay to go to the match. Even if we have a slight uptick in accuracy it isnt worth the cost right now.

Would be interesting to get the view of someone who does go to matches instead of keyboard warriors like myself :D

    @Dr_Intoxicated perhaps?

Liverpool imperious right now. Will face a really tough/packed winter fixture list so that likely 9 points may not be as huge as it looks but deserve to be top. Lots of work for the chasing pack to do!

Much as it hurts to root for Pool, I must say that I find myself hoping they'll just run away with it so we have a better chance at 2nd
