    Morales starts as well.

    McKennie is at center-back.

I forgot that he existed for a minute. Whoops. Thanks for pointing that out.

Center back? Wasn’t he just playing the 10 role a few weeks ago?

The guy he is replacing expected to be out for sometime. Get used to Wes in the back. He has to temper his fire somewhat. I see him as a weapon on set pieces. I love it when they say "all the big boys are coming up". You know, with his height and all.

This has been a really bad game through the first 30 minutes. 3 combined shot attempts, 1 (Dusseldorf) on target.

Watching a little. Schalke look especially toothless. Me thinks they miss Wes too much in the midfield. I’d call up a junior player to help on the back line if I were Wagner.

    HT 1-0 Schalke

McKennie has done. Fortuna hasn't tested him too much. He had a foul early on, came rushing out to mark a man in midfield about midway through half and Fortuna played around him into the space, and there was a late corner where he ended up the closest man in what looks like a zonal marking scheme. The ball went over his head but Fortuna weren't able to do anything with it. His passing has been good. Tried a couple of long balls midway through the half one of which almost connected to Kenney.

Morales has not been to involved. Was playing on the left side of a double pivot, though may have swtich to the right after the goal. Lost a couple of 1 on 1 situations to Serder early in the game, the goal came on a move where Harit was able to be picked between him in the center back, and Morales almost picked off a couple balls high up the field. Two of Fortuna's better attacking moves came when Morales was able to make himself available in the halfspace and connect a pass to get them moving towards goal.

Nothing Steffen could really do on the goal. There was one other big chance for Schalke where Raman got a shot off just outside the six. Steffen came out but I am not sure if he got a touch or Raman just scuffed it. It was cleared off the line by Jean Zimmer. Other than that Steffen has only had collect a couple of attempts to play the ball over the top.

Steffen makes a big save to stop a bouncing half volley from Schopf after a Schalke counter. The crossbar had already denied a great chance from Harit in the sequence.

McKennie's flailing hand just stopped a Dusseldorf shot off a corner. Dusseldorf should get a PK out of this, but let's hope he doesn't also get a red card.

McKennie has his hand up by his head and a Fortuna header hits it from a short distance.

Penalty to Fortuna converted. Yellow card to McKennie.

    1-1

    1-1.

Fortunately, McKennie earns only a yellow card out of this.

2-1. Schalke retake the lead off a corner. Kabak powers a header between Steffen and the far post Dusseldorf defender.

2-2. Dusseldorf attack after a Schalke turnover.

I hate to say it, but McKennie was sort of lost at sea defending on that sequence. He was sort of drifting back, letting a 3-vs.-2 develop without putting pressure on the Dusseldorf attacking player. Nubel had a discussion with McKennie after the goal.

Fink comes on for Morales's double pivot partner Bodzek after the equalizer.

Looks like Morales playing as a pure six now which he hasn't really done this year for Fortuana from what I've seen.

Yeah, this has definitely been the most exciting Dusseldorf game I've watched.

It seemed like the 3rd Schalke goal took a deflection off the defender and into the corner. Tough luck for Steffen.

3-2. Schalke beat Steffen with a deflected strike.

Morales was getting back to provide cover on a Schalke attack. He collided with a teammate (Adams) near the top of the box and the ball just sat there, enabling Serdar to find an opening for the strike (which deflected off of Adams).

3-3. I don't think McKennie was really a problem in this sequence, it was just a fine little attack from Dusseldorf.

McKennie was up and down. He did get lost out there a number of times and obviously gave up the penalty as well. If he weren't a US player (and certainly if he were a player COMPETING with McKennie for a spot) he would be taking major heat for this performance from our fanbase. I thought Steffen was decent, even giving up 3. Basically, there was nothing he could do on the goals and he did make a couple pretty decent stops. That's my take, anyway.
