Regulate = control. That's the literal definition.

Sanctioning = approve or give permission for a pro league to play under USSF's rules. US Soccer does not control leagues, it only sanctions MLS, USL, NISA who US Soccer's does NOT control their business operations.

Actually, "regulate" can mean "supervise" and "oversee' which is exactly what the USSF does.

Not in this case, "M". That's what sanctioning does.

No. A quick look back over 2014-17 shows no womens games in Cary. Or men's games. Wakemed has been there since 2007 right, or at least that's when the Railhawks started playing thre. Malik took them over in 2015. WNY Flash relocated there for the summer of 2017 season - maybe drop a game in to see if people will really come out to support women's soccer?

Nope, no games at Cary until 2018.

Sure, it might be a goose, it'll be funny if one of the lawsuits shows that it was what it walked and looked like :)

And on the men's side, we're doing a pretty good self ban on those FIFA comps :)

Sanctioining is a facet of regulation.

I missed the 2014 WNT game. Malik took over the NASL team in 2015.

You overlooked the 3 CONCACAF WNT qualifiers in Cary in 2018.

It's possible having a nice 10K seater so it looks full on TV is just a smart marketing move. We'll never really know.

They weren't random qualifying games, it was a tournament.

The CONCACAF women's tournament was placed there by CONCACAF, not the USSF.

The USSF has been using that complex since at least 2002, as that's where the infamous NY Times USMNT photoshoot took place.

The USMNT also trained there for a while before the 2002 World Cup and played a scrimmage against the Richmond Kickers. I still recall the meltdown BigSoccer had over the result (a 2-2 draw against a USL club). Of course, we then went on to have our best World Cup run of the modern era.

So CONCACAF just worked out a deal with Malik, they didn't ask their members "we need to host our WC qualifier, submit possible host cities" ?

So you seem to all be confirming that the site was intermittently used and then right around the time Malik was deciding to leave NASL, they got 5 games in 2 years?

    Glad we can agree.

Do people actually promulgate this as a serious conspiracy theory?

Sure "USSF replaced Papadakis with an NASL owner, Malik, on the board of directors, who then promptly decided to leave NASL for USL, and who served one term before Papadakis resumed his position on the pro council"

    sounds completely coincidental...

It's obvious the NASL was the gang that couldn't shoot straight. Malik didn't get to be a billionaire by being bad at business, I'm sure once he decided soccer was his play with an NWSL and NASL team he realized the smarter play was going to USL. He had nothing to lose, NCFC is a pretty generic name on the intellectual property front. Indy Eleven were the only team w 1st division aspirations besides the Cosmos with anything at stake, and I'm sure the eurosnobs at MLS marketing are delirious at the chance to use "Racing" instead of United/FC/Real...

    So, conspiracy...nah. A conflicted fed....pretty much...

Don't forget Tampa, Ottawa and Indy moved from NASL to USL in 2017 and 2018 with Bill Edwards suing NASL over "a criminal conspiracy".

The article is quoting a slightly longer article from the Guardian. I'd follow the link at the bottom of the mlssoccer.com article to the Guardian article for anyone interested. There were some good observations about the league and life in the US that didn't get quoted in the mlssoccer.com article (not just about league strength but in general).

pro/rel privilege :) They grew up and developed in the system so they're blind to the advantages.

"There are a lot of South American players I’d never even heard of before I came here who are really good players.” - also p/r systems

If there truly were advantages, coming to the closed shop set up would open their eyes by virtue of what is absent ... yeah?

So with the actual team name and crest announcement it looks like San Diego will finally have a functioning fully professional club in San Diego.* And I can now say 100%, it would be a hell of a lot better if we had pro/rel. This is no longer a hypothetical question for me it is real and genuine.

So just to clear anything up, I have put down my deposit and will be purchasing season tickets for at least the inaugural, and there are rumors that they are hoping to pull a Sacramento/Cincinnati but it would still be better plain and simple, if they were entering an open pyramid.

*I know 1904 is playing in the NISA but I am pretty skeptical about their future getting 3,000 in a 70,000 seat stadium.

I don't think they even need to pull a Sac/Cincy. All they need is a D1 stadium.

So Warren Smith wasn't rich enough for Don Garber's tastes in Sacramento, but he is now in San Diego?
