I never ever meant to in any way imply there was some lacking in the Duke players. I was just trying to understand. It would make more sense if they had a 0.2 GAA and most of the ties were 0-0, but that’s not the case. It also seems to be a pattern over the years that they have a lot of ties. I may be a UNC fan, but I am not a Duke hater (ok, maybe a little specific to Duke men’s basketball only )

Thank you for pointing this out. Cat has never been fair when announcing FSU games and she does not try to hide it.

This is an ACC thread. It's ok to hate Duke here.

Last year in one of the ACC tournament games, her co-host referred to us as "Florida". She began to correct him, then sorta' let it go, when he seemed oblivious.
Don't think she would have let it go, if someone announcing a game had referred to UNC as State.

Saw the Duke team out to dinner at a local establishment. They looked primed to make some waves tomorrow evening!

Don't be ridiculous: No one has ever said that two-footed, studs-open tackles were part of the game. That's complete nonsense. Shouldering/shielding is totally different. The attacker made a good play. Players often move an opponent away from the ball before playing the ball--and often rather forcefully, especially to keep an opponent from getting to a ball that is rolling out of bounds. Fouls are almost never called on such plays even when the player trying to get to the ball is knocked down.

As for Whitehill, given that she was a defender herself, she should have been expected to take the defender's perspective on the play, no? She didn't. To say that she is biased, well, it's a convenient excuse. I've listened to her a lot and haven't noticed any overt bias, which would be unprofessional.

In the end, this is pointless. Soccer fans could disagree about various calls all day, every day. There is a lot of variability and subjectivity in soccer calls--especially when it comes to precisely this sort of play--how much contact is good play and when is it too excessive and a foul.

I accept Your opinion that shouldering on that particular play was totally OK. My question to you would be if the roles were reversed, And the defender did the shouldering and knocked the girl down, would it have been a foul? More importantly, would the ref have called a foul? Then lastly, is that fair?

We're still talking about this? You can find plenty of examples of FSU defenders shouldering or elbowing WFU players off the ball in that same game (without drawing a foul).

    Anyways...

Tonight determines ACC seeding and last hopes for NCAA bubble teams!

We agree on the perspective part. We will have to disagree on the part regarding the rules changes and what people believed was acceptable in the past vs today.

I suggest you do some research if you believe I am "ridiculous" in my assertions that what was legal/acceptable in the past is now viewed otherwise.

Watch Pele getting fouled repeatedly with 2 footed tackles. How many of those players got sent off back then?

This article will tell you how many got sent off when he was brutalized in the world cup.
    https://www.battlersandbottlers.com/pele-disgusting-treatment-in-world-cup-1966
"Despite persistent fouls against Pele the referee refused to send off any Portuguese defenders."

Plenty of 2 footed tackles in that one. The Portuguese defenders believed the dangerous tackles were part of the game.

It was so bad FIFA eventually changed the laws to make defenders pay for their tactics. How do I know that? Because FIFA said so:

    https://www.fifa.com/about-fifa/who-we-are/the-laws/
"Hence a series of amendments, often referred to as for the 'Good of the Game', which were designed to help promote attacking football. They began with the offside law in 1990..... In the same year, the 'professional foul' - denying an opponent a clear goal-scoring opportunity - became a sending-off offence."

"The game's Law-makers then struck another blow against cynicism in 1998 when the fierce tackle from behind became a red-card offence. With a new century approaching, the commitment to forward-thinking football could not have been clearer."

The rules allowed tackles from behind as late as 1998 according to FIFA. I'm old so I remember all the grumbling from players/coaches that were older than me about it no longer being football and the game becoming too soft/etc, Van Basten's injuries from all the nasty tackles 2 footed, from behind, etc all contributed to the debate. It is a FACT there was a huge debate about the changes at that time. Many defenders thought it was wrong to change the rules just to benefit the attackers.

In 2005 Sir Alex Ferguson complained about the physicality of the Premier League. A year later fouls were down 22%. Progress.

Tackle From Behind On Way out At World Cup, Too Late for Van Basten
"Defenders are upset because the tackle often is their most valuable tool."

It has been perfected in Britain. So it’s no wonder that Jack Charlton, Ireland’s coach and a defender on England’s 1966 World Cup champion, is against any change. He warned it will make the referee’s job impossible.

″I played all my life and I don’t know what a tackle from the back is yet,″ he says. ″How do you determine whether it is from the back or the side, when players are always turning and thrusting?″

FIFA hopes the goal ratio will improve, but Charlton warned it would only increase ejections.

″Can you imagine a game where two or three people are sent off for a tackle from the back?″ Charlton says. ″It will be messy, difficult and cause controversy.″

Belgium already has taken precautions and stocked up on defenders in its 22-player roster.

Maybe you are young? Maybe you just want to argue. I don't know. But the facts are there were players, coaches, and football giants who argued for those defensive tactics to remain.

    You stated:
"Don't be ridiculous: No one has ever said that two-footed, studs-open tackles were part of the game. That's complete nonsense."

    History says otherwise.

You might not know it, but it happened, and took a long time to change. Anyone that played men's college soccer in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s knows it. Jack Charlton knows it, Sir Alex knows it, Pele knows it, Van Basten knows it, my old surgically repaired knees know it, and thankfully FIFA eventually made changes to correct it.

This year does look exceptional but FSU actually has had more ties than Duke over the five seasons prior to this one. I am a Duke fan but I tend to think that some years they have less overall depth than do other top ACC teams like UNC, FSU and UVA. Their top players are equal quality but they don't have the same bench strength. When injuries hit maybe it weakens the team more than others and you then revert to a more conservative, defensive approach to tough games? Also perhaps why they haven't been able to win the big one?

For some others (not uncchamps2012) to attribute it to fear of failure is misguided and insulting.

Sorry, not sorry. ;) They'll get to prove us all wrong come ACC Tournament time. Duke is my least favorite ACC team, but I'll still root for them in the NCAA Tournament to beat every other non ACC team they come across.

WILD end to a WILD season. Miami comes from behind to take the lead against UNC but can't hold on. Pitt gives Va Tech all it can handle, but their magic season comes to an end after a goal is called back. Notre Dame and WFU battle back and forth in snow and rain in dramatic fashion, but Wake's bid to stay above .500 falls short on a last minute goal in 2OT (after they had tied the game with 8 seconds left). Clemson comes from behind to steal away BC's upset bid and likely NCAA hopes. Virginia and Syracuse don't even get to play because the field is flooded. As a result of that canceled game, FSU gets the two seed in the ACC Tournament after topping Duke 1-0. And the night opened with NC State stunning a battered Louisville team 1-0 on the road. And who is the winner of all of this at the end of the day? The Virginia Tech Hokies, who have a top 10 RPI, will likely get a national seed in the NCAA Tournament and will not have to play in the ACC Tournament because they finish in 9th place on the tie break. Tons of rest before the NCAA postseason. Wow.

Would Virginia Tech really be a seeded team? Their best win is against Yale...

Weak way to get the 2 seed. In fact ridiculous, but with the tight scheduling, no way around it.
Im just going to say it. The quality of College soccer this year has been down. Va Tech are not close to the quality one would expect of a top 10 RPI team.

I just think its funny that Virginia Tech has a top 10 RPI and yet they didn't even make the ACC Tournament. it seems like there is 1 or 2 teams every year that has a super high RPI but the results really make you scratch your head and question the RPI

I have them ending projected to end up at #15 in the RPI. Massey currently has them at #19, taking into consideration factors such as goal differential.

So likely, by the end of the season, they won't be a top 10 RPI team. And in the #15 or so range, they easily might not get a seed.

Duke always gives it all and plays with class. They came damn close to a tittle a few years back.

How could the UVA vs Syracuse game get totally cancelled? Couldn’t they play in the dome? Or the day after? Doesn’t seem fair that all the other top teams had to play Syracuse and have their RPI get hurt

If both coaches agrees, any game can be cancelled. Syracuse didn’t wanna get embarrassed, and UVA didn’t wanna hurt their RPI so it makes sense that they didn’t try to reschedule the match

Well, once cancelled, there was no way.it.would be replayed. Why stay in Syracuse for an extra day, play two.days before the ACC tournament, and then travel, and minimize their home field advantage?
