No longer a Barça lounger: Sergiño Dest at PSV (olf FC Barcelona)

Discussion in 'Yanks Abroad' started by ChuckMe92, Oct 24, 2016.

  1. No. You told Dest without a doubt would be our starting RB at the EC2020 campaign, a statement the full blown pushers at the "Telegraaf" for him to be pulled into the Orange camp didnot even mention. Nobody in the Netherlands in favour for him to choose the Netherlands considered him a starting option. So telling that as a fact makes you not much of a source with credibility.
You are one of those fans that are so desperate for a (super)star in the USMNT, that you fabricate one and already when Dest got a first start in the JC shield match, declared him a back that for sure was going to be the right back of the Orange team.
I never made it a secret I donot value him as a back, already in Y Ajax. I do however value him very much as a forward going player, hence my personal preference to see him in the midfield. An opinion shared by YA follower @freisland who I'm pretty sure has more knowledge about Dutch football than you do.
I followed him in his youth period for YA followers and reported his doings. If you mind, go and check out the link I posted of his match against 2nd tier club SC Cambuur, in which Y Ajax at home was trashed 0-6. There you see how vulnerable he is as a defender, but that was apparent already in other highlight posts from other YAjax matches.
So if it makes you feel good to claim a superstar chose the USA over the Orange team, then do it. But donot declare someone that with arguments pulls down your statement to be without credibility.
There are even people, can't remember if you were one of them, that claimed he was promised a starting spot in the Orange team for sure by Koeman.
Even after Koeman told about his one conversation with Dest he can't promise anyone a spot, but told Dest he sees a future for him in the Orange squad and gave him a list of his competitors for the spot.

I really hope Berhalter puts him in the midfield, as then he for sure will be a success as a USMNT player.

    Sorry, bungadiri.

Yeah, relatively new phenomenon, though. vdWeil was pretty much the lock RB for 3 1/2-4 years - from 08/09 through 11/12 (when he got about 2/3 the games, missing a run in the winter/spring before returning). Then van Rhijn held it for 3 1/2 or so seasons - up through 14/15. Then it became a bit of a free-for-all.
Tete and van Rhijn trading slots in 15/16.
Veltman playing the majority of RB in 16/17 and 17/18 until his injury.
Maz taking over for 18/19 until his injury.
    Dest the wunderkind 19/20...

So, the average shelf-life of an Ajax RB? 2.5 years?

Not sure that's weird for a club that a) expects to compete for domestic trophies every season, or b) lacks the megabudget of the teams from London, Manchester, Milan, Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Turin, Liverpool and Munich. Sometimes they need to sell an outperformer, and sometimes they'll ditch an underperformer who is threatening domestic title hopes.

Yeah. I already before the match commented both coaches put on the pitch a line up that was full attack and less defense and the one from Stam was the most surprising one, given our not so good performance the last three matches. If the gamble was to score fast, it failed as after the first minute attack they forgot to go back fast and the ball was in the net.
I think he threw the towel too early. Gio van Bronckhorst lost his first 7 matches at the start of the season as a new coach. The next season he crowned us champions.

However I think he felt humiliated the way they lost against Ajax, as they were superior on the pitch.
You can't hurt a fighter like Jaap more than going down without a fight. The number of fouls in the match seems to have been very low, not even one yellow card was shown in the match.

  7. With the London Chelsea match looming I wonder what ten Hag is going to do with his line up. Is he going to field a team that matches the one he intends to play in London to get a try out of it against PEC or is he going to rest some players to get the most out of them in London.

van der Wiel was the starting RB for the Dutch in the 2010 WC pretty much by default. He was sold on to Paris St. Germain for some decent money when it was apparent that van Rhijn was just as good. Tete took over for van Rhijn as he could defend which was paramount in Frank de Boer's boring U-Turn football philosophy and when Bosz came in, Tete was out. Veltman moved out to RB when Davidson Sanchez came into the club from Colombia. Veltman would have been sold on had he not suffered the cruciate tear in the late spring of 2018 which gave Mazraoui the opportunity.

Ajax players get sold on when a) there is a lot of demand of the player (e.g., de Jong and de Ligt this past summer); b) they are nearing the end of their Ajax career (Schöne, most recently) or c) there is a better youth prospect in the wings.

Isn't this a better question for the Ajax thread over on The Netherlands forum?

Huge loss might overstate it. The Dutch could easily produce players just as good as Dest over the next couple of years. They also have at least serviceable outside backs, even if those backs play a different style.

Clearly you don't. You can have all the general football knowledge you want but clearly you don't have sufficient knowledge of the Dutch football prospects to make the claim you did. If you see Dumfries and Mazraoui as the only fullback competitors for Dest then that says enough. My point has been made. And the Freddy Adu reference is hardly random. Tell me, how many of the super hyped USA prospects have actually become worldclass? Clearly hype does not = a guaranteed result.

Dest at the moment is a hype machine of US 'soccer' fans. Great potential prospect, but that's it at the moment. No where near the finished product. How could you possibly argue he would be a starter for Oranje if Wijndal, Stengs, Ihattaren, Koopmeiers and Boadu all have never been called up? All young extremely talented players with more hype and potential, who have been performing at a higher level for a much longer time. Do you even know who those players are? Dutch fans have been screaming for all 5 of those in Oranje for a while now, and still not a single one has gotten a call up. Oranje right now has big players, you don't just 'get' a starting spot on the Oranje team based on a bit of potential. His performances haven't warranted that call up yet, for all his offensive abilities he has been leaking goals and on the international stage that is lethal. His ability to fulfill his potential will hinge on whether or not he can shore up his defensive duties. You think Dest is an incredible prospect because of his ability to dribble and attack, but we have offensive players for that. The first duty of a defender is to defend. We have had other highly rated attacking fullbacks in the recent past (Patrick van Aanholt, Jetro Willems) and how far have they come? I am not a fan of Dumfries but in fairness Dumfries has his games where he is a beast as well. In no way is Dumfries a bigger liability than Dest at the moment.

    Exactly.

Let me be clear that again I wish Dest chose The Netherlands because of his POTENTIAL to maybe add to Oranje in the FUTURE. Not by any means because he fits in NOW. If he wants guarantees to immediately roll into the senior international football scene then the USMNT was the obvious choice for him. Fine decision, no hard feelings, I hope it is a fruitful partnership. Time will tell if he ever would have been good enough for a substantial career with Oranje.

  15. I really hope he doesnot end up in my Freddy Adu Award thread.

You Dutch fans are super salty lol

there was literally no point to compare Freddy adu to an 18 year old starting player on one of the top teams in Europe. But I understand why one would be upset and make these outlandish comparisons.

Hi all. I've tapped a couple of people on the shoulder and deleted a post that would have pushed one of them to continue a conversation they'd already agreed (in private) to stop.

Once again, we're trying to put the breaks on/relocate the national team talk.

    Dutch posters @Orange14, @feyenoordsoccerfan, @DutchFanatic, and @freisland

Is Patrick van Aanholt a good comp for Dest? Is that what people see him becoming? Maybe not as many goals but hopefully better defensively in a few seasons. He just seems the obvious comparison to me.

Is that a fair comparison? A realistic outcome?

I'm not sure to what degree I am allowed to answer this question in this thread... but given it is primarily a discussion about Dest's footballing capabilities and not his would be role in Oranje I will assume it is allowed.

I think that is a very fair comparison. It's always tough to compare players because you never know how their trajectory will play out, but yeah, i'd say that is about as close of a comparison as we have. In fairness when Patrick van Aanholt was coming through I thought he was going to be absolutely worldclass. He was a very highly rated prospect by Chelsea and young oranje and a lot of us were very excited about him. He had undoubtably even more hype than Dest. Unfortunately he wasn't really able to shore up the defensive side of his game, so his primary contribution will always be as an attack minded fullback.

Dest looks to be very similar at the moment. I'm curious to see how he ends up progressing his talents. I personally love those fast, technical, dribbling fullbacks like van Aanholt and Dest, so if he can figure out the defensive side he can really make it far.

Yeah, didn't mean to suggest it's weird, esp as Ajax also fancies itself a selling club. I just hadn't really laid out the numbers that specifically before.
