It seems that there are few countries interested in organizing this U-17 world cup. Twice in a row in Conmebol: Brazil 2019 and Peru 2021
After today it really looks like FIFA is doing everything once again to give it where the money is biggest -> China! I do not see it going elsewhere!
I like the idea of returning to a 6-year interval between decision and event, as was the case for every WC from 1990 to 2014.
yepp! same was planned for 2022 btw, but US forced FIFA to use "fast track" that one particular time, and FIFA is never against anything that brings big money!
Infantino hasn't changed the rotation policy ... so far ... but he did say: "the more bidders we have for the World Cup, the happier I am.".
2030 World Cup bidding to launch in 2022 with decision in 2024: http://www.insideworldfootball.com/2019/10/25/2030-world-cup-bidding-launch-2022-decision-2024/
both statements from Blondo and from that text on insideworldfootball are only partly correct. here the full press conference from infantino: around 35:30 he says that according to FIFA statute one confederation can not host world cup twice in a row, everything else is dependable on bidding regulations that will be ready in 2022! he also did say the more bidders the better. so in simple words and translated into real world: if FIFA feels it may gain something by excluding someone they will put it into bidding rules as they did it many times in the past, but very likely not this time because infantino‘s FIFA is after big money, equals sticking to statute letting everyone but CONCACAF to bid, equals china in 2030! I do not like it either, but I am afraid this thing is done before it even begun!
I think the rule that excludes only countries of the confederation hosting the previous WC is a sound one. Excluding the previous two host confederations is excessive and was never the case until 2026,
IIRC the rule was in place for 2018 and 2022 also. They considered getting rid of it for 2026, but then confirmed that they were keeping it unless no one else was able to host and they had to give it to UEFA. I do think UEFA will be overdue for 2030, and should get it if they are not going with South America for the centenary. China can then bid for 2034, and they can get rid of the rule at that point. Ending it right when it suits China isn’t a good look. So I say keep it for now, then get rid of it once everyone’s had their turn under the current system.
The two tournament miss rule was brought in after full rotation was abandoned after Brazil was awarded 2014. Conmebol and CAF were unable to bid for 2018 and after FIFA persuaded all the 2018 bidders who weren't European from bidding CONMEBOL and UEFA weren't eligible for 2022. If the two tournament ineligibility rule has now gone then it actually lasted one tournament longer than full rotation did.
Thanks for the explanations. I read elsewhere that also important is the time zone rule: never before have consecutive WCs been staged outside the European time-zone (based on three global time-zones of Europe-Africa-West Asia, Central and East Asia-Australasia, the Americas).
OFC is the forgotten confederation but lets be realistic here. There isn't any way that OFC could host a world cup.
Pretty much, yeah. Though if Australia ever hosted it would be neat if they could rope in NZ in some capacity. Like keep Australia as the official host, but just play a few groups, maybe a knockout game or two, in NZ. NZ would pretty much be automatically qualifying out of OFC, anyway, so don’t even have to formally give them a host spot, really. And just rig the draw so NZ gets to play at home (don’t have to make them a top seed, but just put them in a predetermined group in NZ, then just draw teams only from the other two pots for that group).
No reason why Australia and New Zealand couldn't co-host (AUS as the senior partner, naturally) - the only question would be which confederation would get the "host confed" berth in the playoffs.
Another reasonable doubt: at what time will the matches be played in Australia? What would be the ideal time to avoid losing so much audience in Europe and the Americas?
Time zone issues are a major problem for Australia/NZ if they host, and were a major issue in Korea/Japan. The lack of time zone issues is actually one of the very few redeeming qualities of the Qatar WC, especially speaking as an American here. This is something I actually saw this year with the Rugby World Cup. I’m not a rugby fan, I don’t watch rugby, so not a big deal, but I was considering watching a game or two out of curiosity... only to realize I would have to wake up at 6:30 in the morning AT BEST. If the tournament had been in South Africa or England, I probably would have caught some action. But it’s in Japan, and I’m not a diehard, so I didn’t. This is exactly what happened with casuals back in 2002. It’s not clear that there’s a particularly good solution. If FIFA lets games kick off at 10 in the morning (doubtful in and of itself), it’s 7 PM ET, which is alright for East Coast Americans/Canadians and some South Americans. People on the West Coast get more of an evening kickoff. Western Europe is not doing great in this scenario, but not altogether horrible. It would be 11 at night in London, and 12 in Berlin or Copenhagen, meaning if you watched the game it would end at 12:45 or 1:45 at night, which is not so bad and probably better than waking up early. If you’re in Russia or the Middle East, though, you have wait until 2 or 3 in the morning. Unfortunately there’s really no way around this. It is definitely a point against Australia here in this discussion.
This way or another, it might get one of most interesting bidding wars ever. There will likely be four, maybe even five candidates in the end, three of which could have very strong arguments. I am pretty convinced FIFA has already made their decision to, at least internally, push for China 2030, but ultimately the Congress decides! Guess there will be no big news about this until bidding rules are published sometimes in early 2022, presumably at one of their ExCo meetings, or during the 2022 World Cup Draw in April.
I don't mind who gets awarded, they're coming here soon enough to the states, last time I was only 1 year old when we hosted it! Althought it would be 28 years between East Asian nations hosting, which is a long ass time.
Ferdández and Fernández will rule Argentina for the next 4 years. They use football like Romans used gladiators. However, the economy will not improve.
I wonder if Australia ever regret having left OFC, at least until after they'd hosted a World Cup... they may have had a genuine shot at hosting along with NZ playing the whole "never been held in Oceania" card... as it stands now, they are competing with the rest of AFC... China and the like...
No regrets at all. FIFA have no intention of holding a major tournament in this part of the World so we haven't lost anything in that regard. With UEFA establishing a nations league to fill up friendly dates we would hardly have any international football at all if we were still in OFC.
