MLS is quickly working towards the NFL set up of 32 teams with 8 divisions, 4 in each. That would allow a schedule of playing the other 3 teams in your division twice (2x3=6) and the other 28 teams once, for a total of 34 games.

Interesting stat: The Red Bulls have been knocked out of the playoffs 10 years in a row by 10 different teams.

I caught the 2nd half of their game, and Philly definitely deserved it. Robeles kept them in it, but I can't believe he didn't get called for the foul when he grabbed Picault's arm in the box when they were going after a loose ball. That's a pretty brazen move, especially a couple of minutes into extra time, but maybe being a "star" he got the memo that he wouldn't get called for that....

I thought we had already reached the expansion goal with St. Louis? Are MLS operators being seduced by the franchise fees (or am I remembering it wrong!)?

With the number of teams we're approaching (and maybe more), I wonder if a different type of pro-rep division 1/division 2 setup would work:

    - two levels for the regular season - regular season schedule includes only opponents at same level
    - %50 +/- of the top-level teams make playoffs
    - only promotion-bound lower-level teams make playoffs
    - otherwise revenue-sharing/national TV exposure is equal among all teams regardless of upper/lower level
    - clubs add ~4 'friendlies' to their schedule for teams they won't play in regular season (maybe use LRU - least recently used [played] algorithm to determine friendly opponents).

I wonder if the equal sharing of revenue/national TV eligibility would blunt most of the opposition to pro/rel that big investors would normally have.

And, the big plus here, is that it would allow MLS to keep on expanding, broadening their geographic reach, pulling in more fans across the country from different regions, without bloating the schedule/standings. We could end up with an MLS with 60 teams, hitting virtually every state/corner of the country.

No, the goal is 30 and with Sacramento they're only at 29.

I certainly expect that it will either be four divisions of eight teams or eight divisions of four teams with each team playing their intra-division foes home and away and every other team once.

Pro/rel is never going to happen. These owners are spending north of half a billion dollars to enter the league and build a stadium; they're not doing that with the possibility of being relegated to a second division.

Right now the NBA and MLB have 30 teams, the NHL has 31, soon to be 32, and the NFL has 32, so I can see MLS right at that range. Sacramento is #29, and 30-31-32 would come from cities like Detroit, Charlotte, Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Diego, etc.

Unlike other sports, there isn't going to be that much of a watering-down of talent with a new team coming in, since players come from literally anywhere in the world. The issue is how to set up divisions so they make sense geographically for the sake of regional rivals and so scheduling makes sense. With 27, they can do 3 divisions of 9, so you'd play your own division H/A and everyone else once for 34 games. Once #28 comes in, you'd have to do 4x7, which would bring you to 33 games, so one extra vs. someone from one of the other divisions. If you go to 30, then it would be 8-8-7-7. That would be problematic for the teams in the 8-team divisions, since playing the division 2x and everyone else once would make 36 games. The 7-team divisions would have 35 games, so something would have to give.

And don't get me started on how to divide up the divisions. Some teams would have to be kept together, like the Northeast teams (NE,NYC,RB,PHI, DC, and probably MON & TOR). Likewise for the West Coast teams. Other teams would be paired, like MIA/ORL, ATL/NSH, CIN/CLB, RSL.CLR, the 3 Texas teams, KC/STL/MIN/CHI, so it might be hard to divvy them all up while keeping the division numbers right and keeping these rivalries intact.

This is just a random thought after watching the Revs and the leagues growth since '06, but has the expansions watered down the talent pool in officiating? I don't mean to be so random, I was just wondering if there was a correlation.

My point was that pro/rel around the world brings with it increase/decrease in income potential/prestige, so if they could mitigate that, it could be a possibility. The thought was that if the only real difference between the tiers was the number of teams qualifying for the playoffs ...

But, yeah, don't expect to see it in my lifetime.

Yeah, having MLS-1 and MLS-2 is an interesting idea, but I can't see it ever happening. In fact. all of the leagues around the planet where they do have it, if it was a cartel-based system where the club owners set the rules like we have here, the first thing they'd do would be to eliminate it.

But seriously, how big can MLS get? Due to scheduling a 34-game season, you can't really go beyond 32. Or you end up with not playing every team at least once. If you had 8 divisions of 4, you'd have 6 games in-division and 28 vs everyone else for 34 games. a 6x6 scenario would be 40 games (or you'd skip an entire division to keep it at 34). It gets complicated.

My idea was that Tier 1 teams would have a complete schedule against only Tier 1, and Tier 2 with Tier 2. All teams would add something like 3-4 friendlies against the least recently played teams from the other tier. Kind of like MLB inter-league games, except the concept of 'league' would change every year with pro/rel. A high percentage of Tier 1 teams make the playoffs, a low percentage of Tier 2 teams qualify - so, at least everyone has a chance.

I think we're far more likely to see inter-league play between MLS and Liga MX than we are to see tiering within MLS.

    DCU losing Acosta
Lucho Acosta is leaving #DCU. Destination still to be determined. I just spoke at length with him - he was thoughtful, sometimes emotional about his time here and offered praise and criticism to both DCU and #MLS alike. Story on @theathleticsccr shortly.
