Need to stay focused here. One silly foul is all it will take.

“We know what kind of chaos [Andy Carroll] can cause” say the announcers. Is the match being played in a pub?

Lovely stuff from kova, neat pass from CP and tammy denied by yedlin working hard to get back.

Should have had 3 in the last few minutes

Lol, that’s....a penalty. Not sure how we didn’t score there. (I blame Pulisic.)

I have to say, I have my heart in my mouth nowadays with our defence.

3 points and a clean sheet. Five wins in a row for Frank. The Jawdee's did NOT have a single shot on target and they pretty much 'parked the bus' as the "English" say.

He is one of those players that can UP his tempo as the match goes on. He was all over the field that second half. Good performance again and glad that first sub appearance was an aberration. Has become an important starter.

Good to get the clean sheet and I generally thought we played well, though Newcastle were pretty dire, especially going forward.

He will be the Chelsea captain in the near future. He is a very solid player and he is constantly helping out the players around him. Good role model for the younger players too. He may not have the creative pass that say Fabregas would have when playing from deep, but then Fab would go MIA in games and Fab would only be fit for 70% of a season.

It's the sort of tough game, (where we didn't play well, tbh), we'd have lost in recent times. Sometimes you just have to grind them out.

Credit to the gaffer. As a recent international himself he knows first hand the challenge of adjusting from country to club and is able to use this to prepare the squad.

Like you say, just have to grind these ones out. Keep trying and let the quality tell. It eventually did and 1-0 was flattering for the toon today even if this could easily ended up all square.

Wasn't expecting a lot of goals going in to today given how Bruce likes to set out his team but delighted with the result.

I said on the other thread that Frank would probably be putting an arm around Puli after the yanks, (the national team I mean... not the guy himself), has been suffering a bit and it was great to see the guy come on and play his part.

What pleased me more than anything was that he didn't hide from the ball. He got himself into positions to make a difference and help the team, including that time the ball got redirected towards him.

Some people will say he might have done better. Leaving aside the point the ball was slightly behind him so was difficult to get on target, in my opinion, that completely misses the point. The point is he was THERE.

That run out would have done him a lot of good.

I was watching splotchy streams and then nothing at all - but it seems like Mount was largely without impact?

That was a pleasing result, given that the only thing worse than playing a defensive minded team after a poxy (forced) International break, is playing a defensive minded team after an International break away from home.

    Few thoughts.

Tomori continues to play well in a general way, but also continues to make things hard with poor passing decisions across the back line.So far, we;ve been fortunate that nobody has scored from one.
    That will not continue.
I rate Zouma as a decent squad player for the back line, not a starter, but It'll be interesting to see if Lampard sits him or Tomori to make way for Rudiger.

Our midfield toaday was average for most of the game, I thought we saw both ends of the performance scale against a sitting deep team, in that Jorgi was overwhelming and Mount underwhelming.

Funny ol' business football though, if Mount scores that chance, he gets a start in the following game because he made something happen at the business end, which is what it's all about.
Think he needs a rest, playing a lot lately.

CHO or Willian for man of the match?
CHO played well on the left wing, real trier that lad, but Willian played well all over the pitch, again!!

Pulisic looked lively, should have scored though...I (personally) would sit Mount next game and give him a 90 min run out.
That corner from the right again, I mean..wtf...their best chance came from there, continues to be a problem for us.Maybe Lamps will plant Rudiger out a few yards from the left post to mark that area, but thats zonal marking and I think it's shit :)

All in all though, 3 points and a clean sheet after a poxy International is a gimme any day of the week.

Personally, I think this is exactly the right way to look at players. Finishing is a bit random - sometimes you hit it with your shin and it goes in, other times you catch it perfectly and it’s straight at the keeper. But getting into the right positions is the important part - that means it’s probably skill and not chance. Get into good positions often enough and the goals will come.
