Maybe not twice the talent, but it was more talented from top to bottom:

GK: Kasey Keller Brad Freidel. Steffen looks to be making a nice career for himself, but you can't argue that he is currently better than either of those GK in 2002.

Defense: Eddie Pope is better than Miazga, Ream or Long. Cherundolo and Yedlin are a wash, with a slight edge to Cherundolo being better suited to the 2002 system. Mastroeini and Berhalter are better than the Ream or Long.

Midfield: A in his prime Claudio Reyna, John O'Brien (yes I know he played LB), Frankie Hejduk has more heart than anyone that we picked, and an in his prime Eddie Lewis. Definitely a talent edge currently to 2002. McKennie could still come good, Roldan could maybe become a good bench option. Jury is out on Yeuill. DeMarcus Beasley was electrifying and what within two years of replacing Arjen Robben and being the leading scorer on a Champions League semi-finalist.

Forward: Brian McBride (in his prime), Clint Mathis (prior to his injury) and wonderkid Landon Donovan.

Even the most optimistic viewing of the roster we called up for Canada doesn't produce a better picture than the 2002 roster. Hindsight is for sure 20/20 in this instance.

I'm not sure what to think about the likelihood of qualification under Berhalter at this point. Previously, I had subscribed to the school of thought that even with as bad as the US was last cycle, it still took a million-to-one own goal and a million-to-one 40-yard bomb to knock them out. Odds are, even if they didn't improve at all, they could scrape by this cycle. And I figured they would improve, even with a poor coach, since we have younger, talented players coming into the team.

But now, I just don't know. There's still a bit of flux in terms of who's going to be in the Hex, but presumably, Canada jumps El Salvador for the final spot with that win. That means we'd face Mexico, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Honduras, and Canada.

We did beat Jamaica in a real game in the GC, so maybe we can assume we could beat them at home and get a draw on the road. Mexico beat us at home twice, so we can't assume any points there. Canada just beat us soundly on the road, but maybe we could hope for a home win? Costa Rica and Honduras looked bad during the GC, and Costa Rica might lose out to Curacao in their Nations League group, but we're always horrible on the road in Honduras and Costa Rica. So maybe we can get home wins and road losses out of those fixtures?

That scenario gives us 13 points total. Looking at the past couple Hexes, that would put us in 3rd or 4th. But that assumes home wins over Canada, Costa Rica, and Honduras, which isn't anywhere near a given at this point. And finishing 4th would be no sure ticket to the Qatar either.

America has literally almost 10X the amount of population as Canada. Which wouldn't matter in an argument comparing us to say Holland or Belgium...

But we've had a professional league with real development and almost three decades of far superior performance on the international stage.

So...is there any realistic chance the federation pulls the plug on baldie before WC qualifying starts? Or are we all just exercising the wishfullest of wishful thinkings?

Any real rumblings out there from any media folks?

Reminds me a bit of the old chant used by top academic school student sections (e.g. Northwestern, Harvard and Duke, to name a few) when they lose to their state school athletic rivals:

    "That's alright, that's ok
You'll all work for us someday!"

Well, I;m not surprised that we have maybe taken a step back. We're a young team. So I'm fine with that. And we're trying to learn a new, complex system. We shouldn't expect to be looking sharp.

But we don't seem to be improving. The arrow actually seems to be pointing the wrong way. And that's the real problem.

    It’s not a complex system, it’s a bad system.

Even if it was a good complex system, you can’t implement a complex system for a national team. You don’t have enough time with the players to properly implement it.

A national team coach has to run a simple system and have his team execute it really well. The Berhalters and Stewart don’t get that, and it’s decimating the USMNT program.

We're always horrible at Costa Rica. We're historically OK at Honduras. I think we're 1-1-1 in the past three cycles.

My sense is that they are giving Berhalter one more try. We have 4 first round CONCACAF Nations League matches. We won one and lost one. If we win both of the remaining two, he stays. Anything less and I think they look to replace him. This is my best guess. I can't back it up with any insider information. Clearly we'll beat Cuba in the second match, but all eyes are on GGG to see if he can beat Canada. Sadly, I think the USA will do it, and we will have him for several more months.

I agree. I think it's possible, almost likely, that the USSF acts if Berhalter fails to get the appropriate results in November. I do say the word results, even though performance probably matters more to most of us since it is Nations League.

And I would expect the job to go to either Tab Ramos or somebody outside the U.S. system.

That appears to be the case, but that doesn’t make it sensible, he’s clearly shown he is not good enough, right?

To me that isn’t a problem at this point... it might be the only thing that forces change...

having a crappy coach is one thing. Having a crappy coach with players who have given up leaves the USSF little choice.

If this does happen, the sooner the better

Ramos is likely better than Berhalter, but after Sarachan and Berhalter, it would be unacceptable to hire an insider, if he is really that good, let him go prove himself at the club level. We need a top international manager and then judge him only on results.

I agree, and this is low-key the biggest issue moving forward...

He has lost the locker room, I don't think many would argue with that...However, what is the most likely result in November? US smokes Cuba again, and beats Canada at home. Then what? He continues on as he "saved his job", with a team that doesn't believe in him, and likely still picking the wrong players.

I don't know how many times I can be correct with the NT for the last 5 years, but take that prediction to the bank.

If you list all of Don Garbers positons you begin to see why He gets so excited when Mexico kicks our butt. Massive conflict of interest against the USMNT. And that's even before forcing MB90 onto us till 2030.

I agree with you but this far along in the game would it be feasible to start a job search for a new manger from scratch? Particularly considering how dexterous the USSF have proven themselves to be in these matters. You can bank on the fact that the "movers and shakers" in the FED haven't been sitting around formulating backup plan to execute at a moments notice in the event that Jay's brother needs replacing. Tab would be as close to plug and play as we have. For whatever shortcomings he may have, his guys play hard for him, and presumably he would be in a position to integrate the young kids (including Dest) better than most. I'm sure he could manage to get us through the hex, we could build towards 2026 with a young team, and hand pick a new manager at that point. Might be a moot point anyways though...Jay's brother actually needs to be fired, and even if he is, Tab might not be a big enough lapdog for the Fed.
