If things remain as they are, then it is set in stone that the USA will miss Qatar.

Yeah, don't see why anyone would think we will qualify. Our team now is significantly worse than the last version that couldn't qualify, and was frankly lucky to ALMOST get in.

Plus, is it a disaster of biblical proportions to USSF? I don't know, it might be with all the lost revenue. But that would signify missing 2018 was a similar disaster, and they responded to that by hiring the COO's brother while interviewing nobody else and bringing back a bunch of old Lions. Hardly the actions of an organization that realized it needed to change significantly to avoid a repeat.

I don't think we screwed up when we fired Jurgen. But I do think we screwed up when we fired Bob Bradley.

In 2015, I posted on BS a couple of times saying that I thought Berhalter would be a great USMNT coach because of his ability to adapt to a roster of limited talent and get the most out of it (instead of whining about it like Klinsmann). However, he seems to have done exactly the opposite of that. Instead of adapting to the players he has, he has tried to force them to adapt to him and his system. I was wrong.

Do I think they should have hired Martino instead? No, I don't. I'd be surprised if the reason why they declined to interview him was the language business. My guess is that thanks to the 2026 World Cup, they were looking long-term and didn't want a coach with a demonstrated track record of only staying in jobs for a year or two. Martino has had 13 jobs in his 21 years as a coach. The only job where he has stayed for more than two years was the Paraguay national team.

    (Late post, I know)

For years watching Arena, then Bradley, then Klinsmann, and back to Arena, Tuesday night hit Rock Bottom for me. Like the lowest I've seen besides not making 2018WC.

I can't imagine the gap between 1954-1986 of USMNT sucking and not making the WC, I'll leave that for the older gents to decide.

I would too and that’s sad.

I remember briefly under Sarachan feeling hope again in this program. I didn’t think we’d be world beaters under him, but it felt good to see a US team who gave a damn. Now? It’s like retraumatization all over again of Couva. Every single game.

The situation with Berhalter reminds me of Pokémon. If you have high level Pokémon in your possession but you haven’t collected enough gym badges, your Pokémon will not listen to your commands even when they’re getting their asses kicked by a weaker opponent.

Yup just click on those games under Dave s and see the highlights and lineup. For some reason, Weston plays better when Kelly Acosta is in the lineup. Adam, McKenzie, Acosta had good workrates and gave us some hope.

If you go back, we never had a lineup that featured Adams, McKenzie and pulisic together.

I don't get why people still pushing SUM into this.

What's the role of MLS? Grow soccer.

What's the role of SUM? Sell soccer.

MLS was hemorrhaging money back in the early 2000s by growing soccer. Growing soccer costs money. It almost folded in 2001.

Broadcast rights were up in 2002. Who'd take control of that? A domestic marketing parent company.

So what do you do when you invested millions in a club in a sport that you have to cough up money to invest without getting a return for your investment?

Tuesday lost against Canada was a team with the most MLS players.

    The dysfunction comes at USSF.

But of the 11 jobs that he's left in two years or less, 10 have been club jobs. The time of his departure wasn't determined by the World Cup cycle.

Sorry but as awful as the USMNT (meaning mostly the coach, his tactics, and team selection) are at the moment, they'll most likely qualify for Qatar.
Which shows just how pathetic it is that they couldn't manage to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

That's like saying you prefer a coach who adds zero to one that's a -5... sure but maybe let's aim higher.

If you hire a coach no one else wants, he's unlikely to leave for another job!

I have to say, I have never seen these boards and US media so much in agreement on a coach and the USS structure as we are seeing right now...

    True...but bleak..
In the death throes of the Titanic, there was great clarity amongst those present that everything had truly gone belly-up.
The point is to have a ship sufficiently seaworthy that you may safely reach harbor without ever having the icy comfort of such a moment of universal clarity.

This is very true, undisputably. But the flip side to that is that if you hire a coach everyone else wants, he is likely to leave for another job.

Garber is the commissioner of MLS. His job is to improve MLS. You can't, and shouldn't, blame him for doing that. You blame the people that allow him to be there for their own personal gain.

So in this analogy, Team Rocket would be Stewart and the other Berhalter?
