And with that Sampdoria win they clinched the title. Corriere dello Sport handed out grades of 10 to all their players.

GS top 11 of the 1990-91 season followed by the top 11 bench players, where it says in panchina:

Arguments of the top 11 players and some choices of the most disappointing players, which include Schillachi and Van Basten as the most notable choices.

This was Guerin d’Or average through 33 rounds.

The top player and best performer in the campaign was Mancini, who rediscovered his form from previous seasons.

Yes I mentioned that bold thing too in my take.

I saw the Intercontinental Cup performance received 9/10 grades but saw one strange thing too:

It says the winner vs Inter was an own goal. That is not true. Not even close, and it is clear from behind the goal. Shots on target are generally not counted as own goals anyway.

Quite dubious to give that performance and 0-1 winning goal only a 6. He decided the match with an individual action vs a strong (Ferri, Bergomi etc.) and compact defense and it is only a 6 and behind four of his team-mates? The full highlights show it wasn't the only moment of the match either.

Do you have the grades for the Milan vs Brugge and Milan vs Marseille ties? Saw positive comments in the newspapers about the Brugge match and watched it myself (creating the only goal of the tie).

Why is there no brief comment on Maradona here? In particular with everything that happened and having 0 non-penalty goals and 2 assists the campaign.

Whether he played good or bad, disappointing or at his level; that's also pretty dubious and evading an elephant in the room. The elephant who was the best paid player in the world (in salary and endorsements combined), the most famous in non-football regions.

Unlike Schillacci and Van Basten he didn't feature in the top six (or top 10) of his position halfway the season (after a significant amount of games).

Furthermore, Napoli didn't lose any of the remaining games and climbed from an 11th to 8th place after his departure. Based on those remaining eight games - which includes matches vs Inter, Roma, Lazio and Juventus - they would have achieved 57 points over a full season and would have been a prime championship contender (Sampdoria was champion with 51 points). It doesn't entirely work like that but gives an indication.

The season after this (1991-92) the judicial crackdown on Napoli started... (Napoli finished 4th with the 2nd best attack of the league).

How is it possible there is no comment whatsoever?

Im very interested in the all caos report about Maradona-Napoli-Sevilla trio vegan...hope you have some nice info on that and also about his overall performance in Spain during the 92-93 season. Also would love to read about the general expectation about his comeback between his peers and journalists...
but first 91-92 season i guess! great job btw my friend!

There is a brief mentioning in the front cover where Pagluica is, where it explains how the competition has ended in Sampdoria’s first ever Scudetto. On that page it stated the “definite decline of the fuoriclasse that dominated for a long time (Maradona)”...

In regards to Van Basten and Schillachi, they were forecasted before the competition as the top two favorites to end as top scorers, but disappointed overall. In addition, they obtained the highest amount of worst performers of the week (3 times) in the Domenica out. Furthermore, their overall average grades was either borderline 6 or below, similar to Maradona. In Schillachi’s case, Juventus failed to qualify to European competition in over 20 years. It was a big bust for them after they had reloaded in the offseason coming from winning the UEFA Cup and domestic cup the previous season. In Maradona’s case, he too disappointed, since many considered him the favorite to be the top foreigner.

I’ll check into the grades of AC at Milan at the European level.

Thanks . There is a mention on the cover but then in the article itself it is totally evaded. Very peculiar.

I don't know for Guerin Sportivo but DBScalcio shows:

    Maradona - 6.00
    Schillaci - 5.60
    Van Basten - 6.06

    Gazzetta dello Sport:
    https://football-ratings.blogspot.com/2012/08/memory-lane-serie-199091_5.html

    Maradona - 2/18 times a 7 or higher (0.11), 4/18 a 5 or lower (0.22)
    Schillaci - less as 4 times a 7 or higher (0.10 or lower), 7/29 a 5 or lower (0.24)
    Van Basten - 6/33 times a 7 or higher (0.18), 7/33 a 5 or lower (0.21)

Top of the strikers is champion Vialli with 8 times a 7 or higher, and 3 times a 5 or lower.

Maybe @Krokko has the full grades after the 34th round?

I know it's hard and not easy but like I said it is occasionally strange how 8/10 performances vs top teams don't make the top 10 of the week while a 6/10 in the same position (and no goals) is selected. Some goals are given as an own goal while it's not close (and the league doesn't count it as an own goal either, but also they are not consistent in this).

There are also some seemingly inflated 9/10 grades (the EC final for example, Intercontintal Cup in MvB his case) while other games vs top defenses with an individual winning goal and creating ~80% of the danger in the match is a 6/10.

Much/some of this can be applied to Skuhravy as well, the player who scored the most non-penalty goals of anyone (15 goals), catapulting Genoa - with few Italian internationals in their team - to a 4th place in the league.

Thanks . This match in particular:

And the other match of the tie.

I have about 8 more rounds of Corriere dello Sport of the 1987-88 campaign that was missing. I will finish those before I move onto the following seasons. Sorry if I’m backtracking.

    Corriere dello Sport (February 1988)

It’s the zenith of Maradona’s reign and according to legendary striker, Nordahl, Diego Maradona is worth Liedholm and Gren put together (in reference to that tandem of the late 1940s and early 1950s.)

Also interesting GS gives the man of the match for the 0-0 with fairly positive commentary overall despite receiving only a 5.5 (Carbone as goalscorer for the other match). L'uomo chiave means 'key man'. The important man of the game, in a positive sense.

edit: this is what they say about the first leg Brugge game (0-0)

"Key Man - Van Basten. A champion of his caliber must take more responsibility in the sixteen meters, without leaving the task of concluding to poor Gullit. If Marco is ... on the battlefield, the return match will not have problems." (this prediction was correct for the subsequent matches!)

While Gazzetta talks about him being isolated and alone up front.

This is the 'key man' they gave to Gullit (the home match vs Marseille) scoring a 6.5

I was contemplating about whether the 7.5 game for Baresi might be worth checking but this is the one Milan walked off the field and got banned! (1-0 loss, 3-0 after UEFA intervention)

I suppose a 7.5 for the captain and leader under those circumstances - and scoreline (chance distribution) - might be open for discussion but to be sure I'll check the performance myself the next week. Milan did miss important players of course.
