Knighton has offered his services to the Pats, as a replacement for Gostkowski (in a humorous[?] tweet).

Pretty unlikely that Arena would give him up while our season is active, but ... could be a way for Arena to ingratiate himself with Belichick. We could always recall Cropper to sit on the bench and not play!

At any rate, Knighton should take a tryout in practice and see if its even worth pursuing.

As Arena himself said on Zo and Bertrand, that wasn't ever going to happen. To paraphrase, his comments were "our guys can kick the ball very well and deep. But there's a difference kicking a dead ball and kicking a ball as huge guys are coming to hit you."

    Here's a random thought:
The Revs need a coach for their new USL team.
How about Mike Lapper. (If he is willing to take it.)

End-of-season stats are out, and the Revs have two somewhat surprising inclusions: Luis Caicedo committed the most fouls (79), and Cristian Penilla was tied for third in big chances created (17). Caicedo I guess I can believe, but Penilla? First of all, I don't remember him being a great chance creator, secondly, he hardly played every minute, and thirdly, how could he have come out ahead of Gil there? But Gil does come in second in regular chances created (107).

    Anyway, the list is here.

Was very surprised Turner not in the top for saves. Then checked save percentage and he’s tied for 2nd at 75% with Hamid behind Clark of Portland.

Also surprised Anibaba wasn’t in top 3 for blocks. He really seemed to thrive on them.

    Neither player had enough games.

Turner only got 1 game under Friedel. Thats 13 games worth of shots he didnt have the opportunity to stop.
Likewise, Anibaba only played 22 games on the season, and 3 of them werent starts.

I like to look at stats, but sometimes they don't mean anything. The Big Chances Created stat has to be useless by itself. The definition of the stat is that a player should reasonably be expected to score. Vela and Gressel led the league with 20 Big Chances. Vela had 34 goals for the season. He must have scored every time he had a Big Chance. Gressel, on the other hand, had 6 goals. Not quite reasonably expected to score out of 20 chances. As for 3rd place, Penilla and Barrios each had 17 Big chances. Penilla had 6 goals, while Barrios had only 5.

What would be interesting for the fans is to match that with xG. And to show how many goals actually came from the Big Chances Created. So if Gressel had 20 Big Chances with an xG of 10, we could evaluate his ability to convert chances to goals. The fans and GMs would like that information, the players probably not so much.

I think you (or maybe me?) misunderstand the 'Big Chances Created' stat. I take it as they created a chance by a pass that allowed another player a reasonable chance to score; e.g. Penilla getting to the end line and crossing into the box, same for Gressel as he did against us.

I dunno about the stat "Big Chance." Sometimes you get a "half-chance" or a semi-big chance where it isn't one where you "should" score, but one wher you might. Do 2 "half-chances" equal a "Big Chance?"

How many "Big Chances" did Teal Bunbury have? What would you call the chance he had in the NYCFC game where he missed a header just before he scored the first goal? I don't know if you can say he "should have" scored, since it would have been a spectacular goal-of-the-year type highlight if he did. But he had to time it perfectly, and unfortunately he was just a wee bit off.

I have no idea what exactly it means. The definition from the MLS website is: Big Chances Created - Creating a situation in which a player should reasonably be expected to score, usually in a 1-on-1 scenario or from very close range.

I took that to mean that the player creating the big chance was the one who should score. I know nothing more about the stat than that, which is why I started my original post off by saying it seems kind of useless.

Changed the emphasis in your definition. Again, is that from a pass to someone who then is in 1-on-1 or shooting from very close range, or from a great move to beat your defender and get in on goal 1-1 or both?

I only made that distinction because if it's as much about creating the opportunity via a pass to someone else then to compare the number of goals people make vis a vis their Big Chances Created is an apples and oranges thing.

So, I guess the moral of the story is we need to know what the stat is, before we really know what it tells us!!

Chances created always refers to a pass made to a dangerous location. It doesnt measure the subsequent execution by your team mates.

Conversely a key pass is any pass that leads to a shot. So the heirarchy is assist<chance<key pass, even though some assists are less skillful plays than a chance created

Dan Shaughnessy taking a shot at the Revs in yesterday's article about the New York Giants and their history in New England.

I replied to that in the comments and reminded Doofus Dan that the Revs have a home and all their games are televised.

Yeah, I'm not sure when the last time Dan Shaugnessy had an intelligent thought that he put down on paper, but I'm pretty sure I wasn't alive when it happened. Peter Gammons and Bob Ryan are sports writing legends, and Jackie Macmullin was no slouch either. Now who do you have on the Globe sports page?

Shaughnessy is a good writer, but he loves to stir it up. I have to believe that was completely his intention. I think people generally take him too literally - he thinks his job is to get a reaction.

Which is too bad. His job is to report the news. If he wants to stir the pot maybe he should use his inside sources to report something that would get people interested. Instead he just acts like an asshole in print.

He hasn't been reporter in years. Writing obnoxious columns based on opinions he developed 25 years ago is all he does.

No, his job is NOT to report the news. He's a columnist - a commentator. His job is to give him opinions.

I do think he has gotten too focused on stirring the pot - but that's his literary license. Personally, I don't think it's worth dignifying his shot at the Revs with a reaction, but that's just me. Those attitudes are aging out. His beloved sport of baseball seems to be doing everything possible to make their game less interesting and less relevant. He should write more about that.

It's 2019! Nobody reports the news anymore. When you are putting stuff online and getting paid by the click/comment, the truth is irrelevant.

His dig at the Revs gets people mad enough to comment, and he laughs all the way to the bank.

He gets paid the same no matter what.
And I'm pretty sure online ad clicks are a very small portion of the Globe's revenue.

Interestingly, when I clicked on a Revs article on Boston.com, a pop-up asked me if I wanted to take a survey about their soccer coverage. Now, I never do these online surveys, but in this instance, I decided to take one for the team, as it were.

Maybe people here can look for the article (about Bruce Arena, I believe) and see if the same thing happens.

I checked the story you mentioned. The survey actually isn't a pop up (or at least it isn't now), but the link is right in the story.
