I don't know. But then I didn't write the darn thing either so. My preferred solution would have been to instruct referees to enforce time wasting a lot more strictly (with cautions) and then this change hadn't been needed at all but I guess that was never on the cards.
Mateu Lahoz just can't help being in the headlines. This time he sent off two Barcelona players in a minute late in the game at Camp Nou with the home side 4-0 up against Sevilla. The first was for DOGSO, the second for saying to him "Very bad, you are very bad". Five of the seven Barcelona cards (five yellows, two straight reds) were for protesting. Also booked the Sevilla coach for good measure. http://actas.rfef.es/actas/RFEF_CmpActa2?cod_primaria=1000144&CodActa=58748
He’s probably not going to do el Classico. But I think there’s a decent chance he does a European final next summer.
I'm confused by this discussion. Was that not a foul, a push in the back (twice)? It looked fairly DOGSO-ish to me, outside the penalty area and Lahoz only went yellow. I had to replay to see him show the yellow, then the red. Why, when you are up 4-0, do you commit a foul there? As for Dembele(?) I'd have to think he said more than "you are very bad." That may be what Dembele told the journalists after the game, but do you really think Lahoz has such thin skin? That said, you're right he probably won't see Barcelona again for a bit whether the call was correct or not.
See the link to Lahoz's official report in my original post. Araujo got a straight red for "knocking down an opponent thereby preventing a clear chance of scoring" (he had not been previously cautioned). Dembele got a straight red for saying "very bad, you are very bad" while gesturing with his arms a short distance from Lahoz (he had been booked in the 52nd minute for dissent). Apparently Dembele is refusing to discuss the sending off with teammates, club staff, and directors: https://en.as.com/en/2019/10/07/football/1570436932_816216.html

Another incident from the Barcelona - Sevilla game that went under the radar in light of the dismissals is Pique blasting the ball away in the 84th minute to earn himself a yellow card. The card means that he'll miss the next match against Eibar but will be available for El Clasico. However, he could not have anticipated Araujo's sending off, and the Eibar trip could now be problematic. https://www.marca.com/en/football/barcelona/2019/10/06/5d9a5f42268e3e207f8b4568.html
Okay, so what am I missing other than he's not going to see a big club that he pissed off any time soon? My Spanish is non-existent, but Google Translate seems to have him describing DOGSO-F pretty clearly, are you disagreeing with the call? Tell me what you disagree with so I understand the issue. As for Dembele, only two people know what he really said and, as you point out, Dembele is not talking. Is Lahoz known for a thin skin? Are those his words or a transcription by someone else? The written word seems very soft, but Lahoz went to pocket pretty quick, there. Makes me wonder what we don't know.
Yes, I am sure about this. Look at Lahoz's report: http://actas.rfef.es/actas/RFEF_CmpActa2?cod_primaria=1000144&CodActa=58748
Ah... Language. it's quite possible the "sent off" was describing a result and not a straight red. A 2CT also results in being sent off. Sorry, not enough for me to hang my hat on either way there.
For a 2CT in Spain, the reason is always written as "double yellow". See here: http://actas.rfef.es/actas/RFEF_CmpActa2?cod_primaria=1000144&CodActa=58730
I'm not arguing that. Just that it is more likely that the report is in error or mistranslated than it is that Lahoz thinks that was OFFINABUS or that he gave a straight red for dissent.
Why are people arguing this so much? The facts have been pretty consistently reported and you can see the video where it is clearly a straight red card. We also have access to the actual match report. Mateu Lahoz reported this as "very bad, you are very bad." It's a fact. So we're left with a few options: 1) Dembele said something much worse and Mateu Lahoz did him a favor by cleaning up the language some and likely preventing a prolonged suspension. Doesn't seem likely to me, but got to cover all bases and present that as an option. 2) Mateu Lahoz has five players in his face protesting a rather obvious red card (when they are up 4-0 with minutes left), a sixth player comes in from the side waving his arms (while at least two of the other players are talking) and says some form of "you are very bad" loud enough to catch his attention. It's direct, it is not specific about the call so it's more personal, it's well after the decision has been made and is being dealt with, it appears completely unnecessary/gratuitous, and is has some fun hand motions accompanying it. Mateu Lahoz deems it "insulting" and Dembele sees red. 3) Mateu Lahoz doesn't know the difference between dissent and insulting language but everyone here does. Look, am I saying I would have sent a player off for the same thing in the matches I do? No, probably not. But given everything I see here and that's been reported, I wouldn't close the door to it either. Regardless, I'm not a La Liga referee doing Barcelona regularly and UCL matches in my spare time. If this ticks his box for insulting language, is this really a hill people want to die on to say he's wrong? Let's put this another way... local youth match with a contested decision and 5 players surround you, 6th teenager drives by swinging his arms and says "you suck, you really suck." You're not sending him off? It feels like Mateu Lahoz drew a line that everyone says they always want drawn and then, when it gets drawn, he gets criticized for being too draconian and/or not knowing the Laws.
This video may not stay up long. The on-field discussion between Mateu Lahoz and the Barcelona players was about whether Dembele said "eres muy malo" or "muy mal."
After the red card, Messi tried to defend Dembele by saying in Mateu Lahoz's face: "He doesn't know how to speak (Spanish), he doesn't know how to speak..." https://www.sport-english.com/en/ne...teu-lahoz-he-doesnt-know-how-to-speak-7671492
That was very awkward. The players were crowding him so much he couldn't get the RC up and show it. Someone (I couldn't tell who) appeared to put his hands on Mateu Lahoz's chest. All the arms certainly blocked his path to show the card effectively.
This is wrong, Barca shouldn't get to choose it's referees. It's like choosing your judge, or the officer who arrests you. You shouldn't get more votes cause you have more money.
Here's a longer video of the incident: https://www.beinsports.com/us/fc-barcelona/video/barcelona-vs-sevilla-chicharito-draws-red-c/1313384 Note that Busquets was also booked for dissent before Dembele came swinging along.
