Dest is ready to contribute now.

He is no longer just a developmental player.

I don't think that he is a starter-level player for the USMNT on defense given his problems in isolation, but he would be an ideal change of pace super-sub to shake up one of the wings. I'd even sub him in at R or L midfield like Klinsmann did with Yedlin against Portugal. A player like Dest can wreak some havoc against a tired defense.

I'm not the type to chase after players, but throwing down the gauntlet probably isn't wise either.

You call in your best players. Period. If a player declines the call-in and cannot provide a transparent reason for that, then you obviously continue building around/with other players. You keep in touch, but you don't chase. I think that the Olympic team is probably a good way to keep in touch.

Losing an opportunity to get first team caps is a real loss for these players. Caps have inherent value. Caps nearing a world cup have high value.

It would if I were the coach. No national team is so good individually that they can overcome the synergy of the next talented team that has chemistry with one another. I hate military/sports analogies, but you have no chance of winning a battle if you aren't sure if the guy next to you would rather be fighting for the other side.

Fed: Hey Sergino, did you see that we failed to qualify for the Olympics again?
    Dest: Yeah, I saw that.
Fed: So, you want to come be a part of our exciting youth movement?
    Dest:
    Fed: Hello? Hello?

I don't understand the point here. There's a qualifying tournament coming up and I would think that the opportunity to play in the Olympics would be a highly compelling opportunity for a young lad. We've got a very good chance at qualifying (although you never know...) and even getting a result isn't out of the question.

I'd argue it would be more fun than playing for the USMNT senior team right now as he'd know/like the guys on the team already. I don't think he'd be picked to play for the Netherland's Olympic team so here's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Beyond the sports side, I think I already mentioned that they run out of condoms for the athlete's village in every Olympics.

He also wouldn't change his optionality as he could still switch to the netherlands.

Once again, as much as people can complaine about US recruiting, I am glad they are in charge of this rather than a whole bunch of people on Big Soccer.

If the goal is World Cup Qualification and then the best team possible, there really is no room for the weird pride-based / spurned lover attitudes on here.

Your point is not off but only to a point. Team unity is really important at this level. Looks at all the discord during the last cycle. Not saying this would be an issue or not. I simply don't know. But it is a consideration and only the staff has enough insight on this to know.

I expect that players are much more pragmatic about this than others. I doubt that anyone resents Dest wanting to explore his options at this point, as long as once he commits, he's committed in terms of work ethic and effort.

Perhaps there are some that don't feel that way ... but they better get used to it. There's few dual nationals that wholly commit to a team based on country pride and won't consider opportunity.

To walk away from players who have mentioned keeping their options open and listening to both sides include Mendez, Ledezma, Llanez, Dest, Araujo, Alvarez and just about pretty much anyone who is a dual nat. Limiting ourselves to fourth generation Americans seems like a bad move.

It can be a tough decision. I think people just need to be cognizant of that. Too many of the responses here don't seem to be outcome based; they seem to be people responding emotionally to the idea that may not choose the US.

That doesn't mean that if he waits a year that Chris Gloster doesn't come in, steal LB while Cannon ensconces himself at RB and suddenly we're in WCQ. There could be consequences for waiting -- no one's spot gets held, so to speak. But that's normal -- your job is always up for competition.

Emotion or ultimatums shoudn't enter into it.

I'd add that the loyalty isn't just from the player. Look at Boyd right now. He had to commit to the US forever and they may drop him soon and not call him in again unless he starts playing better. It really is important to figure out where you fit best.

  11. Dest has a luxury most Dutch players havenot. Dest can choose (to play) for the country that fits his qualities best. Other Dutch players have to join the line in wait and hope they stand out.
Point is Dest (or anyone else) has no clue yet what his quality level is for at least a year. Making a decision now or forcing him to do so is premature and ill adviced. In the worse case scenario he either choses too high or too low level for his capabilities.
He has to keep in mind his two Dutch predecessors at Ajax were hailed too, but in the end were flops. So to ride the hype wave and think you're going to make it to the Orange shirt and keep it would be over optimistic, especially at this point in his development. In the Dutch setting you have no guarantees given you're always going to face stiff competition.
So jumping now on the Young Orange possibility (no guarantees) is going in at the poker table all you have without looking at the cards you have been dealt.

Sometimes a bird in hand really is best, especially when you don't really know what will happen down the line. He has to choose between a sure thing now or a perhaps greater reward that may or may not come. Not an easy decision and while I selfishly hope he picks the US, I could certainly understand the allure of a much more elite team. I think if the choice was a full national team game tomorrow and he just had to pick one, the Oranje would be in a very strong position. As it is, not a clear choice really. Tough call, and I wold think a lot will depend on just what the Dutch federation tells him.

I got to see Dest in person in the Uruguay game and he was obviously one of the most skilled players on the field for us, even if he wasn't the best defensively. I actually wonder why he inst considered for a position further up field for the US. Last time we had a right back at Ajax, he was a center mid for us (O'Brien). I'm not sure Dest's biggest value to the US is on the back-line when you compare his skill on the ball and his ability in traffic compared to much of the pool.

Yes, I think that he should be tried in front of Reggie Cannon on the right wing. His comfort level is high rolling the ball up and down the chalk. He can also pinch in and take audacious shots on frame.

I'd like to ask @freisland and @feyenoordsoccerfan to provide some info regarding Dutch efforts in the Olympics. From what I can gather, they've not had much success, but it is also possible that they have not even tried to participate. What's the reality? Thanks.

This thread has become interesting. I get the strong impression that BS posters are trying very hard to grapple, in one way or another, with the emergence of a really good player from obscurity, one who is blossoming before their eyes, instead of being an outrageously glorified false promise (e.g., an off the scale 10 yr old dribbler who has just joined La Masia and is the greatest thing since slice bread), who a few years later has disappeared into obscurity). It's a nice change from the days of rapture over young Mr. Adu).

Is it definitely better to play with the Dutch and likely not win anything than to play for the USMNT and "only" win the GC?

ETA:If past is prologue, he's likely to win at least a trophy playing with the USMNT.

Depends on your personal preferences, but I think overall the Dutch team's prestige dwarfs the US team at this time. I would think this could have many effects, particularly around salary negotiations or transfers. Or, some guys just want to play for the best team possible.

  19. We had a joke as Young Orange coach. who'se incompetence was dazzling. Under this Langeler we never had a chance to qualify with the wrong players on the pitch with let's say interesting tactics.

The Young Orange coach can't tell him more than "If you develop well and stay performing you will have a chance to be selected for the Young Orange team".
Ten Hag personally called Koeman to talk about the selection of Dest for the matches against Mexico and Uruguay that Dest is close to be capped by the USA.
Ten Hag friday told in a newsconference that hetipped Koeman they should pay attention to him. After that at the KNVB they took the matter in hand.

Koeman as far as is known now hasnot done anything, but left it over to the Young Orange coach. So Dest isnot something urgent to Koeman.

However several sites and a couple of news outlets write Koeman is eager to enlist Ihattaren and Dest in the Orange team.

Dest 4 hours ago tells Fox Sport he hasnot heared from Koeman:
Dest: "Nog niks van Koeman gehoord" - foxsports.nl

    https://www.foxsports.nl › video › dest-nog-niks-van-koeman-gehoord

4 uur geleden - Sergiño Dest na afloop van Ajax - Lille in de Champions League. De rechtsback over zijn stormachtige ontwikkeling, zijn rendement, zijn ...

Donot know if he tells the truth as he before said to the Dutch media he hasnot heared from the KNVB just before hopping on the plane to the USA and just off the plane told the US media he had been contacted by them as was confirmed by vd Looi later in an interview.

So maybe he's lying again and has he been contacted by Koeman already.

Edit: maybe a Yank journalist should hop on the plane and ask if Koeman has talked with him. We then could hear the true story.

Dest recently played two friendly games for the United States. However, the right back may still choose the Netherlands, now that the pressure on him is increasing. National team coach Ronald Koeman was an attentive spectator in Amsterdam on Tuesday. "Did he see it, yes? But no, I have not received a message from him. I will leave it alone. When the time comes, I will say so."

    I don’t resent the duals.

I resent that our development isn’t better and we need those duals.

And i resent the overhyping of (some) duals because Yurp. (Looking at you, Julian Green.)

I worry aLOT about Dest’s defense, I think he’d be an ideal winger in a 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1. At least for this cycle.

I'd make a distinction even between duals. If Dest goes with Holland I would be much less upset than if any duals who were born and grew up in the US and played all their youth international soccer switched.

As for Dest I've always felt in qualifying on the road and against really good teams the US should play more defensively and add a second holding mid and a player like Dest could move from attacking outside back to defensive outside mid or wing. Against teams at home (except perhaps Mexico) go with a more attacking formation and lineup.
