Great game. I think we all need to get used to conceding goals. I think we'll win a bunch under Fonseca but they'll be more of this variety (4-2) and probably not too many 1-0 matches.

It was a fantastic game to watch.

Well, it seems that Smalling might be the key to our successful season.

Attack is a well-oiled machine, midfield will definitely work out with Veretout (now I understand why Fonseca was pushing for the guy), Pelle (much more mature), and Diawara (can’t be worse than Bryan).

Spinna gave us much more reliability at the back since he came on, Mancini shaky at times and Fazio definitely our best CB right now.

Lorenzo's not a 10 according to some, though.

    Eh but...

Beautiful, let's just hope he has got stronger knees than Stroot.

Great to see Veretout play well. I am not convinced by the Pellegrini-Cristante pivot. Hopefully we’ll see Diawara-Veretout at some point.

I think Pelle needs to be the 10.. I love Zaniolo but he isn't a natural playmaker like Lorenzo....

I honestly wonder if Zaniolo could be the new CF in this team after Dzeko

It really is just a world class pass but the vision too.. With some confidence, he can be the best Italian prospect

He continues to be called put while he put in another very solid performance. He'll play a lot of games this year.

Nah, I just don't rate him, as most of people here. He seems better this season, but not quite a midfielder we need. Yes he adds some physicality, but gets easily overrun, not dynamic enough, and seems to lack some interest at time. You can often see him just walking back while opponent counters. Diawara is all that with much better passing skills, and ability to break lines with some good passes.

Cristante might be the hardest player for me to assess on the entire roster.

I thought he played a really good game Sunday. I have to go back and re-watch but on first watch he was very solid defensively and moved the ball quickly. It wasn't spectacular but he played his roll well and did what was needed.

Your bias overstates the negative things to his game. He often walks back? Come on now, thats an exaggeration because as you admitted, you just dont rate him.

The Lazio game was chaotic from a team perspective but he had a very good game overall. On Sunday he did everything he needed to again. Veretout is an animal and the two together worked very well.

Sure, I see him as a square peg bought in the middle of a muddled transfer window and it makes him the easy target to pick on. His best position is ultimately ahead in AM but he wont be playing there unless emergency. He has enough in his all round game to be very useful in the pivot along with the necessary grit and so far he is showing it. Also consider at 24, he has many years of improvement until his peak while growing into a role. He will see a lot of games.

Diawara will of course get his fair share of games and I hope he rediscovers the game that made Napoli invest but I wont be surprised to see Cristante push him all the way for game time.

From a technical point of view, he’s not good enough to play behind Dzeko. Pellegrini and Zaniolo are miles better in that position. He’s ok as one of the 2 pivots.

Just another one of Mongos moronic decisions to buy 5 attacking midfielders in 2 summers for a coach who uses 2 mezzalas and a regista.

Also, I have a feeling Diawara-Veretout will end up being Fonseca’s preferred pairing over time.

I agree that he really doesn't suit our game in that position with Fonseca and yes it was a badly thought out transfer by Monchi to build up a collection of attacking midfielders .
He plays the position totally different though hence the Lampard comparison. He is a physical all rounder with a real knack for timing late runs into the box. To have him as an option in that position for a specific game situation/emergency is still useful to have. You would just need a more dynamic striker ahead of him to counter his style. That may happen as Dzeko moves on in future.

His versatility is a good thing for a manager.

IMO, this is key. The 2 complement each other much in the way Ninja and Strootman did. Veretout is going to be all over the pitch pressuring the ball leaving Cristante to clean up. He stays in his position, protects the defense and moves the ball, not sexy, not but vitally important.

Sure I hope Diawara supplants him because from what I've seen Diawara passing skills are top notch. So if Diawara can do the unattractive things Cristante has done plus add his long range passing skills it makes the attack much more lethal.

Yeah, not too bad. I still think he looks out of place as a pivot, but it's getting better.

I'm going to give him the season before I come to any definitive conclusions.

I dunno about the best Italian prospect, but I've been preaching patience with Lorenzo for 2+ years. I've always been a big fan.

It's all about cutting down turnovers and consistency with him. Not massive issues to solve, imo.

He's a decent enough pivot, but it's pretty obvious to me he needs to be attacking.

I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I think Veretout is going to be our signing of the season. This is full of bias, because I love watching a physical DM or CM who breaks up plays, and plays with heart. I do wish we had picked up Besic on a loan this season.

Well, he had to earn that bias over time. Tbh, never watched him before Roma so I didn’t know what to expect, but I expected more.

Didn’t say he was terrible, I just don’t see him as starting pivot in a team aiming CL, and Fonseca seems to like him a lot. He looked decent against Sass but actually Veretout gave the balance to our midfield which was sorely needed.

I think it’s just about time Diawara takes his spot.
