I have covered this before. I don't buy the tortured reasoning. We can't both demand excellence and winning every game against lesser opposition and then crap on the goals that deliver the results.
K. I don't care enough to argue because, as I wrote in my first post, he's just a guy who is there... But Jozy has scored in two games, both pretty much irrelevant, in the last 14 games he's played for USNT, in which we missed the WC, and lost the Gold Cup 1-0. I'm not going to give him credit for pre-Hex 5 goals against St. Vincent, nor would I give anyone credit for that. I need more from our starting striker, which is why I said Sargent now, with Jozy as a backup.
The Panama game was seen as the more difficult of the last two and as a MUST win game. Panama had the best defense in the hex coming in. You are trying to rewrite history to poor mouth him. Non-penalty goals plus assists per 90 minutes (min. 1,000 minutes played). That Vela guy is good. pic.twitter.com/VEHg66hqDg— Ben Baer (@BenBaer89) August 26, 2019
Um, ok. I've already stated my Jozy case, and you just agreed with about 90% of it. But now I'm trying to badmouth him? Pulisic scored the first goal by himself. Pulisic created the 2nd goal, crossed to Altidore on a platter for a tap-in (i guess you'd give him credit for being there? fine with me, though it wasn't a play any other striker wouldn't make). Wood won a PK that Jozy converted for the 3rd. Who knows about the 4th. Must win game absolutely. And he scored a tap-in and a PK he didn't earn, for the 2nd/3rd goal that weren't eventually needed. WOWWWWWW!!!!!!
poo r-moutht, -mouth d] , poor-mouth·ing. to declare (one's ability, power, position, etc.) to be inadequate or disappointing, sometimes as an intentional understatement; downplay: We know you're just poor-mouthing your skill at playing bridge—you're a good player.
Jozy has 5 Gold Cup goals across 3 tournaments. Even Jordan Morris has 3 goals in the tournament. Beasley has 6 while McBride has 8 with Wynalda at 9. Dempsey has 13 and Donovan has 18 goals. Jozy has 1 Confed Cup goal. 7 goals in the Hex. The dude should have had 1 tournament by now where he dominated with goals/assists. A tourney to call his own. Maybe 2022 WC might be that but I doubt it.
Well...…………….it was all set up for him in WC2014. Its amazing the pretzels people turn themselves into in order to discredit our 3rd leading scorer of all time. The pro-Altidore camp isn't saying he's some sort of elite, world beater. Nobody is saying he's Donovan or Dempsey. The problem has been with the rest of the pool. Altidore didn't compete with Donovan or Dempsey as a #9. Those other two aren't #9s. He wasn't competing for callups with McBride (for the most part) and Wynalda. The choice was Jozy Altidore or Edson Buddle. Or Herculez Gomez. Or Chris Wondolwoski. Or Gyasi Zardes. Or a litany of guys of this ilk. We just called up Corey frickin' Baird. To the senior USMNT. Do I need to say that a second time. Corey frickin' Baird!!!
I'm not saying this as a disservice to Jozy. He's done his part. But he's now up against Young Guns who could arguably be more deserving of his spot than he is (based on recent NT appearances). In the past, Jozy was the newbie who was up against average middle-aged guys who could barely score in MLS.
Jozy just drew a penalty and didn't take it. I don't like it. He should demand all the PKs and fight anyone who says different. https://www.transfermarkt.com/jozy-altidore/elfmetertore/spieler/39378
According to TM, 15/19 all time, I definitely recall that he banged his shootout goal in the 2016 MLS Cup to get it started. Pozuelo is 4/7 all time. 4/5 this year.
Baird is a winger with the US. We have a nice group of young forwards now, so Jozy's minutes can be trimmed. Dempsey started playing forward under Bob. Under JK, he was a specialist forward. Jozy has a weak a competitive match record against decent sides. Is this in dispute?
Yes. It's in dispute. He was very highly rated in the 2010 World Cup and he has scored many club goals against World Cup caliber defenders.
Didn't I expose that myth earlier in the thread? He has goals against Mexico, Germany, Turkey, Colombia, Spain, Bosnia, Jamaica, Nigeria, Poland, Chile, Iceland, Costa Rica, Denmark and Peru.
In 2010 he played very well and got an assist. But what has he done for us lately? Maybe most of the criticism might be viewed as squandered potential. Or simply the fact he hasn't delivered in an international tournament ala Donovan or Dempsey has
He has the best resume of any forward available and is the current best at passing, holdup and scoring, he should be the second name on the team sheet for any game we actually need to win. The best defense against him in the Gold Cup was our dumb ass manager not letting him play. People are so emotionally invested in hating on one the greatest players to ever wear the colors, it's gross. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jozy_Altidore
This is his resume. Going forward, Sargent and Morris should be getting the bulk of the minutes at striker. By next year, Toye should also be in the mix.
would he make your top 10 of USMNT players? He'd make my top 15 probably, for sure top 20. But what was the best moment he had in a NT jersey?
Right but that's because we don't play European teams in competitive matches except in the World Cup. But Jozy was injured in 2014 and I can't remember what happened last year.
