He was right in position, marking the goal scorer... He just couldn't be bothered to actually jump up for the ball as it sailed over his head...
Rios got fouled but the call went the other way for handball and that lead to a quick counter that lead to the corner that lead to their goal, but the ref probably didn't give it to him because he grabbed the ball on his way down. Where Rios messed up was not HOLDING ONTO the ball, despite the bad call, to prevent the quick break in the other direction. Godoy still should have defended better, but I had a bad feeling as soon as RSL took that quick free quick. High pressing teams need to be experts at tactical fouls and slowing the game down to prevent counters, and we messed up there.
The problem is, he was too slow and too lazy to get between the goal scorer and the goal. It's easier to defend that if you're moving forward toward the ball as you jump, instead of having the action going on behind you. Speaking of which, Hoesen was on the opposite side, behind the goal scorer, and he didn't do anything but watch. And Marie failed to close down on the cross.
I've mentioned a couple of times before that I thought the team to keep track of was Dallas. Now their 5 remaining games are: At Chicago At Seattle Home vs NYCFC At Colorado Home vs KC Quakes games are: At NYCFC At Atlanta Home vs Philly Home vs Seattle At Portland The Quakes are one point ahead of Dallas. If they can come away with at least the same number of points in their 5 games as Dallas does in their 5 games, the Quakes should make the playoffs. Both teams are home twice. Both play NYCFC and Seattle with Dallas visiting Seattle and San Jose visiting NYCFC. The RSL game could have been the cushion the EQ needed, but that is gone now and the remaining schedule favors Dallas. Of course, any team (including the Quakes) could just collapse and fall out of contention or win a bunch of games and host playoffs, but assuming there are no extremes, the Dallas/Quakes competition will tell us a lot about these teams.
Anybody can beat anybody any game. Minnesota won at LAFC but lost at Houston in consecutive weeks. Stick that in 538 and crunch the numbers.
Looking at the schedules of the teams ahead of us in the table, I think there is little chance we are going to improve our standing by leaping ahead of any of the current top four, but am hopeful we will at least not lose ground to those teams currently behind us. I think much hinges on the next two road games. If we don't get points in either, we may be looking over our shoulders as Portland (who have only one more away game) passes us by... On a positive note, on April Fools Day this year, whom among us would have prognosticated we'd be talking about where we might end up on the top half of the table at the end of the season?
This is what I saw and what frustrated me. Clear push on Rios and it should've been a free quick for Quakes instead back the other way. We weren't good enough to overcome it.
I thought Fierro bailed out too easily. It was a good read by Rimando but had that been Wondo, Rimando would have been taken out on that 50/50 ball. Fierro is way slow and wants to be in the same places Wondo wants to be... that's not a bad thing if Fierro was Wondo's sub but when they are both playing it's a big problem.
If not a handball then how is it not a yellow card for impeding. Rimando was not in any position to defend the ball but he was in a perfect position to knock Vako down and basically stop his forward movement. I don't get how there was not some foul called for that sequence.
And Fierro did suck last night and was standing all over Wondo and walking around the pitch a lot. We should have started Vako and if he got tired then sub in Fierro or Rios. Also Espinoza looked good for the first half but faded quickly, this seems to happen a lot to him while on the road.
Watch the replay on MLS. Their guy has his arm stretched forward ontop of Anibol's shoulder, preventing him from jumping and giving their guy a little extra boost. Any VAR replay should have caught that and called it. Seriously, watch the replay, it's pretty obvious on the replay, as opposed to the live action shot. Go Quakes!! - Mark
I noticed that arm blocking as well. I guess the feeling might be that Kreilach had already beat Godoy and was just extending his arm. I don't think there was a significant advance for Kreilach from his outstretched arm. Godoy was just lazy on that play and clearly outplayed.
Oh come on. That sort of thing is seen in dozens of goals every week, and is almost never penalized. Godoy got beat. Period.
Seems like that game could have gone either way last night. One difference was that Kyle Beckerman really wanted the win. It just felt like Quakes had no one with equal intensity. Maybe Joe Dickerson could have cautioned Beckerman with PI, but we thought Joe did a good balanced job.
In real time, Godoy was late getting into position and was falling back. The dude that scored was already in position. I thought no foul was the right call. I think Marie was at fault on that one for not closing down the cross (a continual problem for the Quakes from both sides, no matter who is playing... we must be coached to be more conservative on those plays).
Weird how sometimes the Quakes play with such high pressure intensity , pressing and counterattacks and sometimes they just fall flat. I’m guess the altitude may have had something to do with it? Not sure exactly if it’s the opponents, the lack of players , inexperience or no cohesion of some or that they just fell asleep. Either way, I didn’t see much offense from the Quakes last night.
I don't think this could have been impeding because Rimando has the right to get the ball which clearly he did. It's hard to believe it wasn't a handball but since the head ref didn't call it there is nothing that can be done. VAR can't review it because it wasn't 1. a goal, 2. a red card, or 3. inside the box.
