I think normally players in good Euro leagues are better than their MLS counterparts especially when in prime age but right now me Morris over Boyd. BTW, where is the Boyd we saw the first few games he played for us? Was it a fluke or was the competition incredibly poor?
Morris has filled in some holes in his game and is a better player than he was 12 months ago. Can he get better? Can he find a move to Europe with his contract and age? Probably not. You wonder what he would have become if he had turned pro at 16, or moved to Bremen. Almost everyone has looked better in the LW spot under GB than the RW spot. Even the players that have played both.
Bit of both. What I'm learning about Boyd that is a huge red flag is that he will not track back consistently. Not only does that hurt the team defensively but it leaves little outlet to pass
My bizarre theory regarding that ..... our midfielders are all right footed right? It's easier for a righty to hit a long diagonal to his left than to his right. Especially if that play is coming from a lone 6. In Egg's "system" the left winger is going to get better opportunities than the right.
His style would suit the German league very well. I hope he does go to europe to test himself. He won't get much better in the MLS.
I'm sure plenty of Bundesliga clubs would want him as long as Seattle wouldn't overvalue him which I assume they will.
Who knows. Remember................a Premier League club wanted Aaron Long. It takes only one. I see Morris as a really useful player at the CONCACAF level for us. His speed is mostly back, and the kid does really put forth the effort. I don't have to worry about Jordan Morris' commitment level. I tend to agree with this as well when you're talking the big leagues -- Germany, Italy, England, Spain, France. At this point though I do think we as a fan base may need to start re-evaluating the level of play in MLS. I have always thought of the league in Turkey as being better than MLS. Boyd starts for a large team in Turkey and is currently behind two MLS wingers (Morris being one) based on the quality of his play. Even Dest comes into play to a degree. I like him. He's got potential. He plays in a Dutch league that I've always thought was better than MLS. Did he really show much more than Cannon last night to really notice he's playing in a better league? I don't feel that way at all. In years past I would think a player like Morris should look into leaving MLS for Holland or Belgium or Portugal. Now I feel like he's better off staying in MLS unless he get's an offer from a German/English/France/Spain/Italy type team.
While on trial at Werder Bremen he notched an assist in a friendly match against Inter Baku. What more does he possibly have to prove?
But isn't that always the case? They don't wanna be lowballed so they overprice them and a club just goes and gets some player from the Championship.
Its all a negotiation. MLS players are under contract. Jordan Morris, by the way, makes $620k/year on his contract. That's a ton of money by MLS standards. Or any standard. In Morris' case I haven't heard any rumors about interest in his this past window. [Like we heard about a player like Cannon. No offers, but lots of interest.]
I thought he was on a million which was why EJ was Omega-Pissed. https://www.sounderatheart.com/2018/12/6/18129220/jordan-morris-extension
He wouldn't have gotten any better than he has in MLS. In MLS he's gotten better in every area, but finishing, which is really a confidence thing, and playing in a top 4 would not help that. But he plays much faster, his touch is more secure, he can play decently w/ his back to goal, combine, still get in behind, now actually use his left foot and take on players. Did you see him at the beginning of his MLS career? He was pretty much an amputee who was doing keystone cops routines w/ Dempsey. Now he can inter-play quickly w/ the likes of Lodeiro and pump in crosses with his left foot. I wish he would go to Europe now to stay stimulated, but MLS is fine to start your career in, as he's essentially done, just went to college initially and suffered a major injury. And not everyone is wired the same. Staying in a worse MLS then even didn't stop Pope and Donovan (for the most part) from being among the best players all-time for the USNT. "Europe" is just the most reliable path for vets. But nobody should hold it against Morris, regardless of what he chooses on the club level, if he keeps being among the most consistent performers for the national team, while showing up in big moments.
Although far from a perfect player, I like Morris more than many around here. 1.) His athleticism helps to stretch the field in a way that Zardes, Altidore and most of our wingers can't. We've had a noticeable lack of speed on offense since Donovan declined and Charlie Davies almost died. It's nice to have that tactical option back as well as the positional flexibility of a player that can play all three spots up top. 2.) He's improved his left foot greatly. I also think he has the potential to improve further as he seems intelligent, willing to put in the work and has been somewhat stunted by his time in college and a major injury. 3.) He's having a good year coming off the ACL tear with 8 goals and 6 assists. If you project it out to his 2016 minutes, he'd be on pace for a 14 goal, 10 assist season. That's pretty solid from the wing. I also thought he was probably MOTM last night and has been mostly impactful in his recent USMNT appearances.
He's played off the bench frequently. That amounts to 1 goal every 245 minutes, which is not a bad total for an American striker/a-wing. Wood, as the typical analog for his style, scored 1 every 204 minutes. And Wood played a-wing a lot less to be in better positions to score. He was the recipient of players like Morris often times, i.e.: @ Honduras. Morris has twice the assist rate. Plus, Morris first joined the national team as a collegiate unlike Wood. You're including those early games all the same. In addition, both of them have played mostly during dark eras for USS, but at least Wood got to play a bunch of games in Copa America, which was the last hurrah for that generation. With Morris it's been between generations almost exclusively w/ so many instances like last night where Boyd misses a virtual sitter off Jordan's cross. No Donovan, Dempsey, McBride, engaged JJ, etc.; here. Even when Pulisic is on the field he has tunnel vision and misses players like Morris, botches scoring opportunities off others, instead dribbling into his own opportunities, and puts away rebounds like Morris forced v. Jamaica but doesn't get an assist for, etc.
You have a good point there but looking into it reveals he's scored a brace against Martinique, two goals against Jamaica (only 1 competitive), 1 against Mexico and 1 recently against Uruguay.
Im not sure you can prove that first statement. MLS maybe the best personal fit for Morris (development wise). Im not sure we know where he would have developed better. Most players get better by some degree in a professional environment. So it should come at no surprise that Morris improved as a player in MLS. Im not sure you can bring out a metric that proves what margins Morris would have improved in each location.
