It looked like Robbins was in Howell's deep mid spot. Maybe Mark trying out different line ups or getting people some game speed reps? Not much of a warm up period before the west coast swing and he knows what he has in Howell. `\_(ツ)_/¯

Found a full game replay on youtube, not Youtubetv.
Once I finish it, I will give my thoughts.
I'm at the half, and I'm encouraged.

Watched about 25 mins of each half. Luckily missed both goals in live action. But the replay is also available on Watch ESPN if you want to check it out and have access. The broadcast said that FSU started in a 4-1-4-1 as such:
D (L to R): Pavlisko, Berkeley, Payne, Carle
    DM: Robbins
    M: Villalobos, Deyna, Yujie, Nighswonger
    F: Newton
    GK: Jeffers

Actually Berkely moved over to left CB and Payne at R CB where Malia was last year.
Observations with just one game in.
    1. Several players look to be leaner and more fit. Specifically, Malia looks leaner and faster/quicker. She may be headed to AA year.
Robbins looks leaner/quicker. Still favoring her injured leg a little, but will be a nice sub for Jaelin and elsewhere. Kristen McFarland looked leaner and quicker by a good bit. Yujie is much leaner, but I haven't decided if that is good or bad. Deyna looks to be in better shape to start the year (more fit).
    2. Lots of deft quality touches in and around the box especially from Yujie, Jenna and Deyna. We were close to 4 or 5 additional goals.
    3. Makala Thomas brings some good pace up top, and some decent ball skills by appearances.
    4. Heather Payne plays F in Ireland and CB for us. She is another attacking presence.
    5. Kirsten P. looks more confident and aggressive IMO.
    6. I saw Jaelin going into halftime and I saw no indication of injury.
    7. Kristina Lynch got a few minutes late in 2nd half. She will hopefully be fully up to snuff by mid to late October.

Overall, I thought we looked dangerous and composed. Good start.

Hard fought OT victory against a physical Wisky side.

    Quick thoughts.
    1. We miss Dallas' pace up top.
    2. Heather Payne had some growing pains today. Her heavy touch in the 1st half resulted in a 1 woman counterattack that was very dangerous.
    3. Malia has definitely stepped up her game.
    4. We still haven't found the right combo up top. Deyna deftly lobbed a perfect ball to Jenna that she just couldn't control with the GKer bearing down.
    5. Wisconsin showed how to attack FSU if you are under manned. Bunker and counterattack.
    6. Similar to #4, we don't have any dynamism up top.
    7. Our wide MFers have not been very dangerous to this point.

Beating UCLA and USC on the road with be a tall order IMO.

I was able to go to the game today, a hot one! I thought I might hurl if we had one more back pass, but I was able to keep my composure. Lots of passing around the outside of keepers box, no one taking initiative, most aggressive attackers where our backline.

We may miss Dallas, and its only the second game but Newton is completely ineffective in her current role. I would start KM in Newtons place. I disagree regarding Payne, I thought she was overall very good. Carle was the one who I thought had an off game.

Overall I give Wisconsin a lot of credit, they played well, smart, organized and I wouldn't say they were any more physical than we were. They also have a lot of very tall players and a few with great pace. They will do well this year, I could see them possibly making a run to the final 8.

As for next weekend, who knows, I ll take 1-1 and be happy. This weekend was a lot of experimenting with the line-ups and it is still a work in progress.

The game winning goal was insane. The video is on the official twitter account, for anyone who hasn't seen it. 30-yard rocket into the top corner.

For all the frustration, consternation and hesitation that game had, the game winner was indeed insane!

I agree with almost everything you are saying.
I wasn't suggesting Payne was horrible. She had 2, what I thought were really bad plays, at least in comparison to what we were used to (Kuikka).
The turnover, as mentioned above, and letting their player turn on her and get a good SOG 1v1.
I expect she'll learn from that. She may end up being an AA in a couple of years.
MB's goal was truly world class!
Currently we don't have that girl who when receiving it in the box, can turn and fire it at goal.

I'm hoping that either Thomas gets more time, OR that Nesbeth regains full speed and can become that pace target we need.
You are right about Newton so far.
We are not getting production out of our wide MFers.
Maybe Lynch will be ready in a couple of weeks or so.

A nice goal, but a flick from close range in a 6-0 game doesn't compare well to an OT piledriver from 30 yards.

We are not getting anything from 3, she has been a huge liability. We were a dropped ball away from a tie game, onward and upward Noles!

We don't get good reliable info. Mark guards secrets about
    injuries and such.
    IOW, I don't know.

As FSU displayed last season, what happens this early means very little. It will be interesting to see how they will look on Sunday though

God, I know. College coaches, hell, all coaches, are such babies about injury news.

I've often wondered if the reason coaches are tight-lipped about injuries is due to the HIPPA laws and being in compliance with them. Under the HIPPA rules, personal health information can be provided to sports information staff or the media only with authorization from the athlete. Injuries of professional athletes are readily made available to the media because in the contracts of the athletes, the athletes agree to all of that. Collegiate athletes are probably a different story and their privacy is guarded more closely.

More than likely coaches are not being "babies about injury news." They very well may not have a choice in the matter. When a coach does divulge information about an injury they need to have permission to do so.

I thought of this after I posted the above.

Because the athletes are students, they are probably protected under FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and not HIPPA. Usually, student medical treatment records will remain under the protection of FERPA and, as with HIPPA, a student would need to waive in order for medical information to be made available to the media/public.

My guess would be that Mark has been rewarding Jeffers for not letting the team down in the title run last season. But Bollinger was the starter for a reason before her injury, and you have to think she'll be given a chance fairly soon, especially after last night.
