Funny, but it's not the robo-call or the , it's the interest, the attitude, the competence it represents.

Get your act together, then we'll talk - about the good-old-days when you were too stupid/lazy/cheap to pull your phone out of your a$$.

haha, fair enough. I am as unaffiliated as they get. I am doing my little thing as a zone 1 (ages 6-11) specialist in my small market. I am flattered that you think I am a USSF plant, but that is not the case. I despise their player and club registration process, penchant for only supporting sanctioned leagues, etc. but I'm not going to pretend like the head coach not tweeting at youth players is an issue worth screaming about.

Soto has said he prefers the US program and he’s provisionally cap-tied. We have good players. Others countries are going to try to get them to switch and players are going to listen because it’s not bad for their career to have leverage. I think Soto should be far down the list of dual-nationals they need to recruit.

Does it? Does the French NT coach contact every talented player that could play for Algeria? Soto has no USMNT caps and unless he’s in line for one at the next camp, why should the senior coach be contacting him? Berhalter is not the youth program technical director. It’s one thing to claim that we should do a better job in recruiting these dual-nationals, it’s another to place blame on the senior coach over a matter that concerns a youth player who has not earned a USMNT call up yet.

Jesus Christ. Let me get this out of the way. I want to apologize to everyone here, if I am writing in a language that is difficult to understand.

Please, can we cut out the dual National crap. Our full team coach making contact with a player that has shown the ability to possibly play for the MNT has nothing to do with how many passports the player holds. They should be contacting EVERY top prospect. The first point of contact SHOULD NOT be an email or phone call from GB inviting them to a camp.

To answer your question, yes, I would guess the French coach has contacted many of the players we played against at the U20 World Cup that have yet to get a full team call up. I don’t know that for a fact, but the French seem a bit more organized than we do.

I have to bow out of this, it’s probably run it’s course.

I saw this post on SBI: "Tom Bogert has reported that Berhalter has been in contact with Dest’s “camp”."

Obviously can't be true, though, because his name is Egg Beerholder, and USSF is so incompetent that they surely wouldn't know how to work a phone.

Same thread seems to clarify (if it can be trusted) that Chile's contact with Soto was about their Olympic roster......

Maybe they didn't all get "participation trophies" when they played AYSO soccer as a kid and feel disappointed and are now pissed? This is 1 hour of my life I can't ever get back reading this thread. Seems like a lot of folks here must need reassurance from their CEO everyday of their lives to know that they are appreciated and doing a good job. Damn all my Master Chief's for not holding my hand for my junior enlisted career! Shame on you! (Above half said in jest... .but...)

Okay, I'm just not understanding all the hand wringing. And I know I don't HAVE to be here and read the thread. But come on, the sky isn't falling! We'll still be able to field a team. I'll still cheer, cuss, and complain about them. Maybe I'm just an old crimungeon Baby Boomer. Yeah, I'm sure that's it!

Once again, it's not about what you think people deserve.

Let's pretend these kids are so soft and entitled as what you say. I doubt it, but whatever. Let's be hard.

And then let's say the Mexican Federation and Dutch Federation gives them participation trophies.

They win games. You get the benefit of being old and crotchety and waving your stick at kids.

It's not about should. It's about what wins.

and I would argue that if I have to coax them and coddle them to join my team we aren't winning anyhow... but again that's the experienced old man in me.

You don't get a participation trophy for winning anything...just for playing..

You are right, its not what I think people here deserve and I didn't say they deserved anything.. it was what they expected... just not in the camp of having to send text messages to teenagers to make sure they represent the USA? Doesn't that sound a bit crazy to anyone? I guess not since I'm in the minority. Play for whomever you wish, life goes on. Don't count anyone to stroke your ego (and lets not kid ourselves this is exactly what we are talking about) to ensure you wear the Red, White and Blue.

    I'm far from young.

But talent and work ethic win things. Tons of talented people want to feel the love. Look at Kevin Durant. That guys is a HOF, wins titles, and still needs love. Now imagine Kevin Durant is a 17 year old.

We should not be acting like withholding communication or appreciation is somehow a character test that only true champions can pass.

There's no basis in fact for that. None.

You don't get a special trophy for being the coach who exhibited the least amount of emotion and staid the most stoic.

A couple of things. I have no idea why or how a phone call to check in with someone, perhaps give some feedback on play (good or bad) is somehow alays characterized as "stroking someone's ego."

It's sounds suspiciously like coaching, to be honest. Is it stroking your team's ego when a coach congratulates them on winning? Yes, I suppose. But no one bats an eye at that.

Number two: the "We should only want players who desperately want to play for the USA" point of view is not one I share, but many do.

If you share it, you just have to get used to the idea that our team will be less talented and win less games to maintain that "standard."

I don't see the point. I'm not about to beg anyone, but I'm also not going to make them beg me.

the only thing el tri has to offer are first team caps right? and its their u20 cohorts that are badly depleted, so they would have to leave home other young (u23?) players who seemingly are more deserving of caps at this point?

I don't know which way anyone is going, but I sincerely hope players like Llanez take a look at Jona Gonzalez.

He got one call up to lock in his one time switch and has been relegated to youth teams since. I don't know what Mexico said to him, but I'm pretty sure at minimum they let the young kid think he was close to contention for a World Cup spot.

Recruiting can be a dirty game, and the losers are often the players who were misled.

An additional data point in the Llanez case -- he was *just* called up to the recent U-20 camp but had to pull out because of his injury. It isn't like the USSF forgot about him.

Agreed and along with just playing for the US recently at the U20 WC when he could have played for Mexico I'm a bit skeptical he's thinking of switching at least right now.

again, the only reason worth switching for is a first team cap and it seems preposterous to say he is ready for that at this point, though a ton could obviously change for him in the next few months

I think there was a report after Llanez attended a Mexican YNT camp that he didn't like the Mexican set-up because he felt too Americanized, and didn't speak Spanish as well as the Mexican-born players. I'm sure all of the Mexican-American players are treated differently because they are born in the USA, but some of them might not feel comfortable in that environment with a team of almost entirely native born players.

This might explain why Jesse Gonzalez, Pepi etc have come back to the US team.

I have heard this same thing as well about some recent kids that have gone to both camps. They preferred the US set up for non-soccer reasons.

kind of makes you wonder about ledezma too...how warm a welcome would a kid raised in the states who doesnt really speak spanish receive when hes keeping folks friends off a roster? jona being at monterrey instead of in europe looms large over some of this dual nat stuff

We've had the opposite happen as well.
Abraham Romero, then of the Galaxy academy, said he preferred the Mexico camp over the US camp. If I remember his reasoning was that felt like he didn't fit in with the US camp. That he was "too Mexican" and didn't fit in culturally with the majority of the US kids. And that was a kid who was born in the US, raised in the US, and played at a US academy.

We talk about a lot of factors when it comes to dual-nationals choosing a team, but it often just comes down to where a young player feels like he "fits in."

That’s roughly what happened with Efrain too right? I know that story is very guarded and not well understood, but something along the lines of feeling not included. There’s so many age groups, so many camps, so many coaches, and so many players. Of course some Mexican Americans will get along best with some Americans and some with some Mexicans.

I thought it was less innocuous than that.
    Did he break curfew?
Whatever the reason, Efrain Alvarez was sent home from a camp for disciplinary reasons. After that.................Mexico pounced.
